More interesting reviews on Fenol Baron Approves Curator Page
An infinitely cute game, filled with kind childlike spontaneity, bright colors and sincerity. In this regard, “Potata” reminded me of the recently released game “Songbird Symphony”, and their setting is similar, they are similar in their internal filling with kindness and real warmth. The adventures of the red-haired mischievous Potata, who goes to the farthest corners of her native forest towards adventure, simply can not leave indifferent. Although she is armed with a small wooden sword, but even you can not use it, having passed the game in a completely peaceful way, without offending even malicious creatures. All the characters are very kind, even if they often strive to pin the main character, an atmosphere of harmony and friendship reigns in this small world, as if creating an invisible dome over this forest. Since the game is a platformer, it is impossible not to say about two things - platforming and puzzles. There are certain remarks to the first one, yet the game was not created by some huge studio, and in some sensitive places the control seems a little awkward (most often I had this feeling when jumping from one platform to another), but on the whole everything rests on good level. The puzzles are very good, they have both variety and a certain challenge of complexity that forces you to get involved in the action. The game has very funny bosses, everyone is thought out with some intricate cunning, everyone evokes sympathy for himself. The enemies in the game are also incredibly cute, but I would like more variety, yet there are very few of them ... About the visual and musical design there’s nothing to say, just look and hear this game once. It looks just amazing, especially as for a rather modest game, sold for a small price, a huge amount of creators' love is invested in each location, which also needs to be appreciated. «Potata» is a very good game that you can play with children (but they’re unlikely to crack some puzzles, so get ready to help them), sincerely proving that kindness and friendship can defeat everything, I would like more of such projects.
Not a bad game; but I would not recommend it if you want experientce from games like Braid, Trine or recent Moster Boy. Controls are awful. Potata missing ladder grabs and other ladscape objects (leading to quick death). Collisions are bad. Like, look at celeste (where you can sneak through spikes) and here you just get hurt/die without even touching things. Sounds generally good, but music freak me out after almost two minutes. (music from Monster Boy, The Messenger or Hollow Knight I would be listening for hours). Maybe I would be back for playing, but first experience just irritating. For devs: please fix ladder interaction, it is like 40% of every platformer experience! You should be able very easy grab ladder and jump from it.
Potata:Fairy Flower
A cute and colourful platformer that has some flaws but generally proves to be a fun experience.
Pros:
👍Cute Graphics 👍Enjoyable gameplay
Cons:
👎 Save system confusing. 👎Optimization at points was low. 👎Occasional bad grammar in text.
First Impressions
I enjoyed my time with Potata. It will take you roughly 10-11 hours to complete and all achievements can be gained on the first play through. The game mostly contains platforming, puzzle elements and parkour. Potata will also need to liaise with a few characters to pick up quests and gain items needed to progress. There are also a handful of challenge levels that will need to be completed and a few boss levels to conquer. Platforming is done quite well. It didn’t pose me too many difficulties but does provide a moderate challenge. Timing jumps and avoiding enemies and traps was easily achievable. The puzzle elements were much more difficult. There are two main puzzles. One is a game where you have to light up a grid of circles and the other is a Tetris type game where you have to fit the shapes into a grid. The light challenge was extremely hard and I had to consult walkthroughs on most of them to progress. On occasion, but not always, you can buy the solution to the problem. I think this should be applied to all the puzzles because if you can’t find a walkthrough or do not have enough credits then you will come to a grinding halt if you can’t solve the puzzle. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1974480525 Potata has a wooden sword which she can fend off enemies with. There aren’t that many enemies to worry about. Perhaps there could have been more of a variety. You’ll encounter a boss at the end of most levels which generally are easy to dispatch after a few runs of knowing what happens next, but fun, nonetheless. The save system is confusing and not at all obvious when the game has saved. Apparently, when you reach an altar this saves your game, but you can also spend credits at the altar to save your game further. When you change location, the game is saved but again this is not indicated. Knowing this will save you a lot of credits! At times it is difficult to know what to do next and I did spend a lot of time wandering around looking for clues on how to progress. It is a linear game when you get to a level but finding it can be problematic. There is a “Base” area which contains your home and acts as a gateway to other parts including the challenge levels. There are a few puzzles here to solve before you can reach other zones. Potata is an enjoyable game overall however and I could happily recommend it at full price. It is colourful and cute and has a whimsical feel about it. There is a jaunty Irish tune repeated throughout. The platforming part won’t challenge you immensely but it’s not too easy either. The in-game puzzles are logical and mostly straightforward, but you may struggle on the end of level puzzles, some of which can be bypassed and some that cannot.
Story
Potata is an aspiring witch but is never taken seriously. One day Potata finds a golden flower in the woods and is mesmerized by its beauty. She picks the flower inadvertently releasing evil spirits and causing an ecological imbalance. The flower must have special powers and be protecting the forest. Potata must find the six scattered petals and repair the flower to its former glory, saving the forest.
Gameplay:
🕹️ Platforming consists of jumping on petals, leaves, clouds and logs whilst avoiding enemies and traps. Petals have flowers which open for a while and then close. You’ll need to time the jumps, so you land on them when they are open, otherwise you’ll inevitably fall to your death. Clouds and logs can move in any direction and again you’ll need to time jumps to land on them. The layout and design were quite clever at times. There are spiders which traverse up and down their webs, exploding pods which can set off pod chain reactions, Witch eating Venus fly traps, floating ghosts, flying fish, and an assortment of spikes and traps to catch you out. You will die a lot, but you’ll learn from your mistakes. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1974481225 There are also puzzles built into the gameplay like pressing switches to move bridges and lifts; collecting pods which you can throw at blockages to clear your path; finding coloured keys which open the corresponding coloured lock; moving blocks to reach areas and finding cogs and then arranging them in the correct order. There is quite an interesting array of puzzles to keep you busy. They aren’t particularly difficult apart from arranging the cogs as you will need to pay attention to your surroundings and use visual clues to solve them. These were a little baffling at times. You have an inventory where you can keep up to 5 items. If your inventory is full, you are still able to collect items but any you pick up will be put into your chest at home. Another handy tip for you that wasn’t explained! I am just full of tips to save you time. The aim of the game is to collect the golden petals. You’ll usually find a petal at the end of levels and after defeating a boss. The boss battles mainly consist of parkour gameplay where you must get to the end of the level before something catches you or avoiding waves of objects flying at you by learning the patterns and then attacking the boss. Some petals are hidden and can only be collected by finishing certain quests. The levels you need to complete to gain the golden petals must first be unlocked by talking to characters in the home area. Some are accessible immediately, but others can only be accessed after talking to characters and completing their tasks. They will then give you an object that you can use to progress. You must be very mindful of what they tell you, however. It is not always obvious what you have to do with these objects. I probably spent more time wandering around the home area trying to work out what to do with these objects than I did playing the levels. There is a list of outstanding tasks which you can access but these won’t help you with the objects. There are also a few challenge levels which eventually you will need to complete. These are usually parkour levels where you have no save points and must complete the level with one life. You will end up repeating these frequently until you learn the patterns. You start the game with three lives, but you can purchase extra lives with credits. Extra lives are quite expensive however and I only managed to buy one extra life. If you do acquire enough credits you can also buy quest items to save time or if you are having difficulty locating them. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1974480315
Sound:
🎵 There is a jaunty Irish tune playing throughout. Surprisingly it doesn’t get tiresome. Effects noises are good.
Graphics:
📺 Cute and colourful. The environments look great.
Optimization and Bugs
My fans were going crazy at points in the game, so I suspect this game is not optimized fully.
Conclusion
Potata is a fun and mildly challenging platform puzzler. You’ll certainly have difficulty with the puzzles, but the platforming is reasonably easy. There are a few things that aren’t explained very well, namely the save and inventory systems but it doesn’t distract from a great effort which has plenty of content for the price.
"Dark Souls for kids" -> Agreed. You will have to pay to save. Every single time. Puzzles have no explanations. If you died after collecting a bunch of stuff/opening chests and doing a puzzle and before you PAID to save? You will have to do it all over again... But let's face it: you'll be doing the same area/ opening and collecting the same things so much, that you can write a guide on it. The game might look good... But it ain't smooth in its controls. Also... It may not be fully translated. So make sure you have knowledge in both English AND Russian. Otherwise... Oops.
What a waste of art skills. Clunky movement controls and very boring pace. So sorry, I just couldn't spend more of my time on this beautiful game. I'd give it 2/5, an average platformer, but steam only accepts yes or no, so I'm giving it a no.
Well... they do say to never judge a book by its cover or a game by its screenshots. Judging by Potata: fairy flower's screenshots, the game does look very interesting. But by playing it, you can clearly see it needed more time in the oven because of all its flaws. The story progression of the game is nonsensical at best. The game starts with the titular character (Potata) trying to find a healing potion for her fox and help her mom make a pie. And her mom is using a cauldron to bake that pie for some reason... Anyway, Potata ventures out to find some ingredients. But suddenly, a portal appears out of nowhere and she decides to enter it for no reason. This teleports Potata to another place, where she has to overcome deadly obstacles and nightmarish creatures, and finally reach the fairy that protects her village from enemies. The fairy then attacks almost immediately because Potata apparently did something to her favorite flower at some point. After surviving the fairy's attacks, she then acts like a ♥♥♥♥♥, saying "Yeah I'm not gonna protect your village anymore. Go beat all the monsters yourself with this wooden sword kiddo" and mentions Potata's father out of nowhere for no reason. Then... okay timeout for a second... No, I did not do anything to perform a sequence break; this is actually how the story goes on. What is the story plot trying to do here? How did we go from zero to a hundred? Who is this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fairy? The main character just wanted to save a random fox and eat pie, where did all this "save the village" thing come from? Why are there random letters everywhere? Who is this Luna named girl that acts like a jerk, appears everywhere and wants to rip us off? The story raises too many questions and introduces too many characters, yet wants us to actually know about them without even explaining them! It also doesn't help that some parts of the game have not translated properly into English and show Russian texts or have grammatical errors, or that a part of the story is told through the trailer on the store page and not the game itself! Yeah, remember that fairy who was angry because the main character did something to a flower? That all happened in the second trailer on the store page and that's why I did not know anything about it. Sadly, the gameplay does not help the situation either. The game is basically another normal platformer, which is not a bad thing by itself. You just go from point A to point B, grab some stuff, finish some puzzles and then go to the next stage. However, the problem is that the game is extremely boring. The game never feels fun to play and is always like "fetchquest, puzzle, fetchquest, puzzle" without any kind of satisfactory result. Not only that, even exploration is not rewarded properly and it feels like you HAVE TO explore the stages to collect the game's currency (blue and green stones). You have to do this because not only you need the currency for re-saving the game, but puzzle hints are also mind-bogglingly expensive. So if you have nothing on you to buy a hint to a puzzle you can't solve, you won't be able to proceed without grinding or looking up a playthrough. The other problem with the gameplay is that it has a bunch of weird design choices. For example, I opened a locked chest with a key, just to find another key inside of it. So what was the point of that chest? Or the re-saving mechanic... why is there no traditional checkpoint activation and the player has to re-save their progress with in-game currency? And why the price for re-saving the progress goes up throughout the game? There's no need to make the saving system this confusing and irregular. The other thing I have to mention is the soundtrack. When you get to the main menu, you can hear a cheerful track. But the gameplay does not go the same way and instead, uses very chill and folklore based music tracks that unfortunately are also very short and limited in number. I can see some people liking these, but I honestly did not like them at all. In fact, I think the soundtrack actually made me irritated because of how repetitive it was, making the gameplay more infuriating as a result. So overall, I don't like this game. I don't know how this game has gotten a very positive ranking on Steam (at the time of writing this) or such questionably high praises from a couple people, because I honestly had a miserable time with it and found it very flawed. I have to advise you to stay clear from this game and even more so if you have played tons of platformer games in the past.
The Night of the Rabbit,
