Numen: Contest of Heroes is a mythology-inspired action RPG developed and published by CINEMAX GAMES that transports players into a world heavily influenced by the legends, gods, and monsters of ancient Greece. Released during a period dominated by dark fantasy role-playing games, Numen chose a different path by embracing classical mythology and heroic adventure. While it never achieved the popularity of larger genre competitors, it remains a fascinating title thanks to its ambitious scope, unique progression systems, and dedication to recreating the atmosphere of a mythological epic. For players interested in exploring a lesser-known RPG built around Greek legends, it offers a surprisingly substantial journey filled with divine rivalries, dangerous creatures, and heroic challenges. The game's story centers on a contest orchestrated by the Olympian gods. Players take on the role of a young hero chosen to participate in a divine competition where courage, strength, and loyalty are constantly tested. What begins as a personal quest gradually evolves into a larger adventure involving powerful deities, legendary artifacts, and supernatural threats. The narrative is firmly rooted in mythological themes, drawing inspiration from ancient stories while creating its own interpretation of a world where gods actively influence mortal affairs. One of the most distinctive features is the divine allegiance system. Early in the adventure, players pledge themselves to one of several gods, each offering unique abilities, blessings, and progression opportunities. This choice influences character development throughout the game and gives each playthrough a slightly different flavor. Rather than functioning as a simple class selection, the system ties gameplay directly into the mythology, making the relationship between hero and deity a central component of progression. Character growth follows a traditional RPG structure while offering enough flexibility to support different playstyles. Players can focus on melee combat, ranged attacks, or magical abilities depending on their preferences. As levels are gained, new skills and enhancements become available, allowing heroes to become increasingly specialized. The progression system encourages experimentation, particularly when combined with the various divine powers granted by the chosen god. Combat unfolds in real time and serves as the primary gameplay activity throughout the adventure. Unlike some hack-and-slash games that rely entirely on rapid attacks, Numen attempts to incorporate a more tactical approach. Different enemies possess unique strengths and weaknesses, encouraging players to adapt their strategies and equipment. Success often depends on selecting the right weapons and abilities for specific situations rather than simply relying on brute force. While the combat mechanics occasionally show their age, they provide enough variety to remain engaging across the lengthy campaign. The world itself is one of the game's strongest assets. Players travel across a large collection of islands, settlements, wilderness regions, and underground locations inspired by classical mythology. Exploration is rewarded through hidden treasures, optional quests, and encounters with legendary creatures. The diverse environments help create a genuine sense of adventure, ensuring that the journey rarely feels confined to a single visual theme or gameplay structure. Greek mythology is woven into nearly every aspect of the experience. Mythological beasts, divine messengers, ancient relics, and supernatural challenges appear throughout the campaign. Players encounter creatures inspired by famous legends while visiting locations that evoke the grandeur and mystery of ancient myths. This consistent thematic focus gives the game a strong identity and helps it stand apart from more conventional fantasy settings filled with generic dragons and medieval kingdoms. Quest design contributes significantly to the overall experience. In addition to the main storyline, numerous side missions provide opportunities to earn rewards, gain experience, and learn more about the world. Some quests involve combat and exploration, while others focus on helping local inhabitants or uncovering hidden secrets. Although not every mission is particularly memorable, the overall volume of content creates a satisfying sense of scale. Arena battles and competitive challenges add another layer of progression. These encounters test the player's build against increasingly difficult opponents and provide valuable rewards. They also reinforce the theme of proving oneself worthy before the gods. The competitive structure fits naturally within the narrative and gives players additional objectives beyond the main quest. Visually, Numen reflects the technology of its era. Character models, animations, and environments are clearly dated by modern standards, but the artistic direction still manages to capture the spirit of mythological Greece. Sunlit landscapes, ancient temples, rocky coastlines, and mysterious ruins create a world that feels appropriate for a heroic adventure. The game's environments often succeed more through atmosphere and design than technical sophistication. The soundtrack complements the setting effectively. Orchestral themes and ambient music help reinforce the feeling of participating in a grand mythological tale. While the audio may not be among the genre's most memorable scores, it supports the adventure well and contributes positively to immersion. The game's ambition is admirable, particularly considering its relatively modest production values. The developers attempted to create a large-scale RPG featuring a substantial world, extensive character progression, numerous quests, and meaningful player choices. Many of these systems work surprisingly well, and the game's dedication to its mythological theme remains one of its greatest achievements. However, Numen is far from flawless. Technical issues occasionally disrupt the experience, including bugs and stability problems that have been reported by players over the years. Certain mechanics lack refinement, and the pacing can sometimes feel uneven. Character progression occasionally advances too quickly or too slowly, creating inconsistencies in difficulty. Combat, while enjoyable, can become repetitive during extended sessions, and some encounters lack the variety needed to maintain excitement throughout the entire campaign. The game also suffers from limitations associated with its budget. Some quests feel underdeveloped, certain story elements lack sufficient payoff, and the overall presentation lacks the polish found in larger RPG productions. Nevertheless, many of these shortcomings are easier to forgive because of the originality of the setting and the genuine enthusiasm evident in the design. What ultimately makes Numen: Contest of Heroes worth remembering is its commitment to Greek mythology. Rather than treating mythology as a simple backdrop, it integrates divine powers, legendary monsters, heroic trials, and religious devotion directly into the core gameplay systems. This focus creates a distinctive identity that helps the game remain interesting even years after release. Numen: Contest of Heroes is an ambitious action RPG that succeeds through worldbuilding, atmosphere, and a strong mythological foundation. Its divine progression mechanics, expansive environments, character customization, and wealth of content provide a rewarding adventure for fans of classic role-playing games. Although technical shortcomings and dated mechanics prevent it from reaching the heights of genre classics, it remains a worthwhile experience for players seeking a unique journey through a world inspired by the legends of ancient Greece. +mechaniky +turnaj příběh ušel -každou chvíli spadne -ovládání -grafika vypadá na 2002 -většina lokací bez hudby -dabing má jen vypravěč (v asi 6 cutscénách)
