No Way Home is a very well executed and entertaining game with great voice action, sweet cartoony grafics and nice weapon dynamics. Complete Missions - mainly by fighting resident Aliens - and upgrade your ship and your companion Matey. He should study the principles of the Line of Fire topic, or I should not fire at him. Hm...
Grew up addicted to this game when it was on Apple Arcade. Was devastated when it got removed off the app store. So glad I found it again, very fun game
I finished No Way Home thrice (1 New Game + 2 resets) by now and enjoyed most of the experience. The devs got most of it right (the rough edges listed in the CONS section). I'm not easily impressed and this game is a hidden gem IMO. I received this game as a gift from a friend (not the devs). PROS:
+ The Star Map has so many sectors that they don't fit in a single screen (but they should, this isn't a mobile game)! The sectors forming the center line and the dome sectors are compulsory to progress through the campaign but there are numerous sectors on both sides of the center line that are optional. + The combat is solid except when it's ruined by the frequent FORCED subtitles that cover a big part of the screen! + The weapon overheating & shield recharge game mechanics force you to be more tactical instead of going guns-blazing in every situation. + Offers lots of different upgrade combos (weapons, shields, reactors, hulls, mods) to try on a wide variety of enemies! There are lots of weapons (50+) available, with unique firing patterns & stats. Getting & upgrading a weapon with Shield Dmg bonus will help you a lot since you will face lots of shielded enemies. Lower heat generating weapons are more effective for continuous fire. My favorite weapons are: Civilian Scout Rifle (Tier 2), Phase Gatling (Tier 2), Little Hammer (Tier 2), Bureau Justice Cannon (Tier 3), Cleanup Crew (Tier 3), Big Hammer (Legendary), Poison Thorns (Relic), Brimstone (Relic). I don't think you should waste your resources on Tier 1 or Tier 2 stuff (except for the ones I mentioned earlier). + New Game Plus modes are available. The galaxy is reset and enemies become tougher - the usual stuff. On top of that, copies of your ship & Matey are sent after you and they show up at the worst times for you, which makes it more interesting but still they were no match for me even in NG++. + Offers 4 minigames with online leaderboards and daily rewards in the (game) Arcade section (accessible from the main menu or during main campaign) that helps you unlock 50+ skins for your ship & robotic assistant Matey. CONS:
- Tech support is non-existent. SMG Studio website has no Support contacts & sends you back to Steam. The devs don't respond to anything on Steam either. I also created a ticket for an issue with this game (full version turned into DEMO version) on Steam helpdesk but they were no use as usual. - [BUG] Sometimes I have to force close the game since the display goes completely black for a long time after completing a dome or a mission that triggers a cutscene. After restarting the game I'm able to continue normally. Happened twice after completing Squeedge's questline. - [BUG] Sometimes the chests are placed so that other objects block access to them partially or completely. - [BUG] Sometimes the number of chests opened are not counted right. This could also be the case for available chests since I can't find the last chest no matter how hard I look for them in some sectors. - [BUG] Sometimes a false GPS pointer appears for items that don't exist in the sector. Also if you look into your inventory / map / missions after opening a chest, phantom icons appear for the ship modules you already collected. - The UI needs significant improvements to make finding / sorting / equipping / dismantling modules easier. It's so frustrating to scroll all the way down on a long list to see the newest items you collected and then having the game send you back to the top of the list if you just equip it, view its stats (INFO) and/or dismantle it. You'll spend so much time finding duplicate/improved items of the same name and dismantling the inferior ones that it becomes a nightmarish chore. The newest items should be listed at the top and the duplicate items (same name & level) should be auto-dismantled. If the item name is the same but their levels are different then the inferior item should be auto-dismantled. - The game sorely needs a universal fast travel option - at least for the sectors you visited. You can only jump among the Dome portals you completed and then you have to go through another 1-5 sectors (1-way trip) by slow travel to reach the sectors you want. And then you'll probably have a return trip just as long. - The weapon stats are missing crucial info such as fire rate and effective range. - I didn't care much about the goofy characters, story and cutscenes. Cho's character switches from sweet to homocidal psycho & contract killer in a split second. You "might" enjoy the witty / weird / silly comments from Cho & Matey the first couple of times, but hearing them over and over with BIG FORCED subtitles will surely bore you (sometimes even infuriate you - especially during combat). You can turn off the voice but not the subtitles! - Matey's AI is too dumb. Walks into my line of fire and gets killed so often. Also you can't turn off his item pickup "feature", which usually ends up wasting your time instead of helping you. An item-magnet would have been simpler & more useful to collect items instead of having to grapple hook or move your ship through each and every one of them. - The settings are very poor! You can't even change the resolution and the VSync option works in reverse! I have a 4K screen but not sure what resolution the game is working at. - Cho's ship/pod & Matey is too small to actually see the skins you are using. Your guns are quite big in comparison (especially Big Hammer) and they cover a big part of the ship. - Upgrade requirements are too grindy in higher levels! The endgame components are very hard to find. What's worse, the Dismantle feature gives only a fraction of the resources back. What's even worse, the modules for Cho & Matey are not interchangeable even though they share the same name and stats! But, in New Game Plus, the loot becomes so much better (dropping up to Level 20 Legendary and Relic tier items) that it makes the buy / craft / upgrade / dismantle features obsolete for the most part! - The repair shopkeeper (Hylga) doesn't restock her inventory, making her an almost useless unscary comic relief (even my ex could be scarier than her xD). Hylga doesn't buy modules (weapons, shields, etc.) - only the elementary components and her buying prices are terrible (1/5th of the selling prices). The credits you collect could be more useful if she restocked after you leave the sector & return. - The achievements are problematic to say the least! Especially the final one (Pusher of Buttons) that's supposed unlock after pressing the RESET button. I did it thrice so far and it's still locked! - SPOILER:
Speaking of cons, there is also an achievement that requires you to be scammed by "Prince" Coorkio (like the Nigerian Prince). I didn't know this was an "achievement" and obviously didn't fall for it in my 1st playthrough, which resulted in not completing Squeedge's questline. Then in the 2nd one I backed up my save files, knowingly fell for the obvious scam for the achievement and then restored the backup files to get my millions of credits back from the scammer. Losing all your credits to a Compulsory Scam backed by the devs is not funny at all! So backup often - I don't remember exactly when you are supposed to fall for this scam! If it's your 1st playthrough, it's best to spend all your credits before answering Coorkio's anonymous call. You're welcome!
Windows 11 local save files location: "C:\Users\[username]\AppData\LocalLow\SMG\No Way Home" It's always a good idea to backup your save files against the risk of deletion or corruption as well. Some fun missions, decent voice acting, fun physics in your spaceship. That's about it You end up fighting enemies than can spawn endless minions, minions that have shields and when killed have their own second form. You spend the whole time trying to slowly grind down shields while hiding and avoiding overheating. You never feel well equipped and even at the very end of the game don't ever get to feel overpowered, let alone "powerful". Some enemies seem to never overheat, have several types of weapons, or even have shields that charge while you're actively shooting them. You can get decent weapons fighting large bosses around the map, but the actual missions give bad rewards. A chest after one of the final missions had basic shield plate in it; miles worse than anything I had used recently. You spend the whole time running and hiding while overheating. Needs better cover and movement to be a cover shooter. Not really a bullet-hell. Voice acting that you initially like gets repeated over and over endlessly. Matey is never helpful, always in the way, I probably killed him more than anything else. Bummed me out more as the game went on, just didn't have the heart to finish
