To start off I heavily supported this game and it's dev and even got a few people to buy it. But as of now I no longer can support the dev due to current statements. The Dev had surgery and after their personality changed from passionate Veterinarian Dev promoting pet health to intensely religious to a concerning degree. Made an announcement that they are using the game to now force a religious narrative. I don't mind religious narratives I have played many games, watched movies and read books with them. Ranging from Fantasy but blatant like Narnia to tongue in cheek with Binding of Isaac. My stance isn't even against the religion, but how they are going about this. What I can't support is the Dev stating it was a religious game from the start when at no point did it state it. At no point was that put forth in the game thus its ether a hidden meaning that they would ambush the player with later since the game is still early access or something they are projecting in post. Meaning it didn't mean that and they are pushing an objective which is really intrusive to their fans who don't fully believe what they do. Think of others and their beliefs before ambushing them with yours. Transparency will garner more faith than deception.
Biogun was really fun at first. Def a metriodvania. I say this after beating Cuphead and the DLC, but Biogun is hard. It's not a walk in the park. It may not be up to the level of Cuphead, but it's not very far off. The boss fights will take several rage inducing attempts. I love a good challenge...but.... I just deleted the game because the save system is clearly broken. I played it for a solid 1.5 hours yesterday. Used the "Bath" many, many times. Fired it up today, and the game acts like I haven't beat the second boss yet (I'm actually on the third boss in the first area). What. The. Hell. The game clearly saved many times yesterday, and somehow I lost progress. I not only bathed after the first boss, but I bathed after the second boss, and many times during the third boss as I ended up going back to exploring. I am not going to re-fight bosses I've already conquered. No game has the right to waste the time I put into it. Also, the game somehow makes it extremely confusing to locate yourself on the map. The player indicator is extremely hard to see and confusing. I don't recommend Biogun.
The game itself is ok, however I encountered many bugs and was not happy because of that. So the bugs: - 2-3 times after entering a pipe I got stuck in some random walls - exit game helped; - sometimes the game % completion is Infinity% instead of proper number; - quite often had issues with the ui - list of quests, scans, etc - the scroll is broken and you can't select needed stuff; - puppy quest shows 24/20, cmon, not tested? - localization issues - some text is in English still (rus localization); - the game starts in English and then in a second switches to your locale, so sometimes your see language switch, ugly; - the last boss got stuck twice after you kill him in his attack animations, not possible to resolve without refight. With some polish this game can achieve like 7-7.5/10. Pros: - quite interesting idea of being inside the dog; - secrets. Cons: - amount of secrets is reduced the more you play, seems like forgot to fill the endgame with different stuff, mostly never find secret walls and most of them just contain some trash.
A pretty fun metroidvania let down by some pretty annoying bugs that still haven't been patched, such as falling through some platforms and multiple boss fights that can glitch and force you to restore your last save.
One of the best Metroidvanias I have ever played. Stellar gameplay, map design, visuals, and music all make this a treat to play. A must play for anyone who loves the genre!
Glitchy and overly crass.
I didn’t expect Biogun to be this good. It’s more a metroid than a vania and it does almost everything right. + Nails the metroidvania mechanics. Most of the traversal tools are original and feel good to play with + The level design is smart and rewarding to explore and it’s one of the least linear metroidvania I’ve played. + Lots of secrets to find + Works like a twin stick shooter and boss and enemies are fun to fight with + Graphism and performance are good which surprised me since they use some weird game engine linked to your browser. - The game is way way too easy. There is a challenge with playing only with a broken gun and I guess it must be tough but the base game poses zero challenge. I killed maybe 90% of the bosses on my 1st try - It’s not necessarily an issue but you can cheat the game in so many ways it’s weird. There are tricks to jump where you shouldn’t be able to, teleport straight to the end of an area at death, skipping the entire challenge, ect… - No 4k Rating: A strong 7/10 Game is on the lower end of a medium size MV. Expect 20 hours.
Overview:
'BioGun' is a 2D side scrolling platform shooter where you play as a microscopic pig named "Bek" on a mission to save a man's best friend from a virus set out to end all of dog-kind. With some pretty serious stakes on the line, the plot revolves around a virus called the "Dooper Virus" having swept across the world. Currently only affecting canines, it runs the risk of evolving and affecting more species if left incurable. A doctor by the name of "DocX" created Bek as an antigen to traverse through his dog's body to combat the virus and hopefully become an antibody in the process and develop a vaccine to distribute to the world. With that in mind, it's not hard to say that the entire game does in fact take place inside a dog's body with maps ranging from the lungs, liver, heart and yes, even the colon. 'BioGun' offers a unique premise and concept when it comes to it's story and executes it in a pretty interesting way (and rather well if I have to say so myself).
Gameplay:
'BioGun' presents itself as a 'Metroidvania' kind of game in the sense that it blends the elements from both the 'Metroid' and 'Castlevania' games although personally, I feel it leans way closer to being to a 'Metroid' game than a 'Castlevania' game with it's theme, combat and movement. That isn't coherently a bad thing because it does almost every single element it guns for really well. For starters, the combat is fun and well done from the start to the very end. The game is a shooter first and foremost. You do get a melee attack way later in the game but it's use is extremely limited and only really used to progress the game in one particular area. The game gives the player a basic blaster to start with but many others get unlocked as the game progresses. I find that in a lot of games, there's usually a meta when it comes to what weapon to use but I actually found myself utilizing most of the weapons I unlocked which was refreshing. The number of enemies is also plentiful and many behave uniquely and pose different threats to the player with some requiring disposal in a variety of different ways. There are also power-ups in the form of capsules that the game has that gives different buffs and benefits but this is the one feature I didn't find myself using that much simply cause I was too busy shooting. They can be helpful but I was able to beat the game pretty easily without using any of them. That being said, it's still good to know that there are capsules that can help a player that's having trouble in a specific area. Now although I personally didn't find the game extremely hard, it definitely isn't a walk in the park either. There are some boss battles and sections that are way harder than usual and feel like unexpected difficulty curves. With any hard part in a game, it just takes a bit of practice and trial and error to learn and overcome it but I can definitely sympathize with the players complaining about random difficulty spikes because they are indeed in this game and I too have felt it. Because the game isn't linear, you can be breezing through an area then suddently come across a boss or platforming section that will constantly kick your ass. It's a drawback of having a non-linear game but the best solution is to just come back when you're stronger, or simply learn and develop one. Lastly, the movement is for the most part fluent. responsive and fun to execute. Something about being able to dash infinitely without a cooldown is just overly satisfying to me. You unlock more movement options as the game progresses including double jumping, ground pounding and hovering. The game implements every single type of movement on top of the unique weapons found throughout the game into the puzzles the player will eventually end up discovering. Many areas will be discovered early on and be inaccessible, requiring the player to backtrack once they've unlocked the proper gear needed. This is where the 'Metroid' element shines the most. Backtracking is a normal mechanic in the game and can be somewhat confusing at first. Thankfully, there are nervous systems in each organ that can reveal the entire map including landmarks that makes backtracking way easier. 'BioGun' is extremely fun and definitely worth trying for players who are into this type of game. I did have a few gripes with the game however. There were some instances where I clipped through walls or glitched requiring a restart as well as some movement mechanics being very janky or not responding consistently. There some areas where I kept stopping as if I was running into an invisible wall just to find out it was 2 platforms lined up side by side but one was just 1 pixel higher than the other. Some even caused me to fall through the floor which isn't fun. My main pet peeve was the fact that sometimes when opening the menu to change weapons, check the map or just do something in the UI, closing it would cause it to reappear. This made it especially frustrating during boss battles when I need to open it for a quick second to swap weapons just to have it open back up when trying to close.
Controls:
As mentioned, responsive for the most part and easy to learn. The game also explains how to use certain abilities as they come which is always welcome. Rebinding keys is possible which is another nice touch and something I know many people like to have in a game like this.
Graphics:
Despite being a rather gross and uncomfortable setting to some, the graphics I actually find visually appealing. Sure, it's the insides of a dog but the developers somehow managed to make such a taboo and weird setting bright and vibrant. You dash and jump your way through intestines and guts but even with that context, the game is still nice to look at. Shading, lighting and visual effects when it comes to combat and animations are superb. At no point in the game did I find it repetitive.
Audio:
Nothing special but nice to the ears. The way characters talk was pretty amusing and unique to each one. Music isn't bad but is forgettable. Sound effects are good and volume settings are thankfully metered.
Conclusion/TL;DR:
'BioGun' is an above average 2D side scrolling platform shooter where you play the role as a microscopic antigen in the form of a pig on a mission to save a virus-riddened dog. It offers plenty of gameplay (At around 20 hours for 100%) with lots of areas to explore, weapons to shoot and abiltiies to use. There are a few problems from a couple janky movement mechanics to odd difficulty curves, but with decent graphics (given the setting), amazing gunplay, and a great exploration element, the fun 'BioGun' gives the player far surpasses it's flaws.
👍
