Absolutely loving this game
I put this game on my wishlist for over 20 months and never touched it. However, what I did keep up with, was the soundtrack. And I honestly regret not playing it sooner. The second I found out Gareth Coker was going to be working on it, I was ecstatic to see more of his work after loving the Ori series and playing Will of the Wisps on release. I honestly did fall in love with his work, and Moon Studios too. Had to wishlist the game as soon as I found out they were developing a new game. And recently, I decided it was time to actually play it. To experience where these themes and music actually take place. Anyway, that's besides the point, the soundtrack (why I played the game) I'm someone who genuinely loves game soundtracks. Orchestral scores especially. It's rare that a game has pulled me in enough before the game does itself. The score leans on studio soloists layered together with digital production, and I believe that the mix is part of what gives it its range. After spending nearly 2 years listening to these tracks on their own, finally seeing how they breathe life into this world is nothing short of incredible. Jason Graves and Gareth Coker have crafted such a masterpiece that completely shows off the game's dark fantasy theme. While I am aware that everything has shifted over to Gareth Coker, and I couldn't be more pleased. I still acknowledge the great work that Jason did. Every environment, boss fight, and track perfectly fits its theme and brings the world to life - whether you're walking through the Sacrament, or fighting the Riven Twins. The entire score feels powerful in high-risk scenarios, and so gloomy and heavy with a deep sense of doom that hangs over everything. I have to mention that the music is also very patient. It perfectly creates a lovely atmosphere while exploring and lets you breathe through the silence, and the rain. I really don't know how to express how i feel, or rather, the raw weight of what the music gives you. But the music really does stick with you. Now, the game itself: The art style is so beautiful and well made. It is genuinely inspirational to start making stylized 3D art. Moon Studios is an incredible studio. Every single point from the floor, the trees, to the buildings. And not to mention the lighting, so beautiful. Optimization has been really great! though in some areas it can dip, but not that much! The game runs really well, and I have high hopes from the full release. The characters and voice acting is so full of life! For example, Odessa has an amazing voice actor who really brings out the character. Even walking around Sacrament makes you feel immersed. Now the environments, they had me in absolute awe. They are beautifully hand crafted. Every environment is unique, fulfils its atmosphere perfectly, and has you wanting to explore further. There is detail everywhere! I love how the town is upgradeable, and I enjoyed grinding for it. Now the combat, I play as a staff monk, and I really enjoy the combat. There is a huge range of builds, armour, spells, weapons, gems, and so on to explore. And I absolutely will go back and explore other builds and weapons. I also quite enjoy the Cerim Crucible. The bosses are so unique and always throwing something new at you. But I do have to say that the parry is questionable at times. The Atmosphere is incredible, and even further enhanced by the soundtrack as I have already stated previously. The boss arenas are unique and well made too. Everything feels immersive and alive, whether you are just exploring or in combat. Now as for Early Access. I have such high hopes for the 1.0 release. Whether that be the new changes to stats, or combat, or the parry. The game is absolutely in great shape. The game already has so much potential and content that can last for a very long time, and to think we are going to get more! It really will be excellent and I'm excited to see what will come. As this game is in early access, I'll be updating this review when 1.0 releases, or if my experience/opinion changes while I play this so much more. Still, I really wish I'd played the game way sooner. As much as I have loved listening to the soundtrack all this time, I wish I had been playing the game. I can't wait for more! This game really has become one of my favourites, and I plan to sink plenty more hours into it while I wait for 1.0
Everything i ever wished Diablo 3 to be but never was. Immersive systems, engaging action, visually compelling world design. So much fun in coop
