I played this game co-op with friends for 90% of the time. Therefore, I feel like my experience is vastly different from a normal solo playthrough. This game is not a walk in the park, but some Dark Souls/Elden Ring experience can get you a long way. There are a lot of ways to basically do the same task: killing your opponent. Your opponent has the exact same thing though, many ways to kill you, gruesomely. A lot of things are quite overwhelming and complex, and I feel comfortable saying that having 2 other party members really helped me not having to focus on every single aspect of the game. For example: Taking aggro Using buffs for the party Allowing limited revives when at least 1 other party member is still alive Are all really nice perks of having co-op. Overall, really cool game that scratches the Dark Souls itch while still being something vastly different.
So much fun. I'm in Dream of the Demon now. Every main dungeon I start, I think, "this is my favorite dungeon." Then I get to the next one, and I say, "no wait, *this* is my favorite dungeon!" It's awesome. In another 400 hours I'll get Ni-oh 3, I promise. But I'm still enjoying this one. Got it like three or four months ago. I played Ni-oh 1 with Steam Controller (got it just to play that game). Now I'm using ps4 controller and it is terrific for this game. Difficult game, yes but satisfying. Don't overthink the prep and jutsu every time you die (though it is very important), it's really all about execution!
Nioh 2 is an incredible game, but it treats the genre very differently. Instead of mysterious world to explore, the game uses a world map menu. You pick a mission, clear the area, beat the boss, and go back to the menu. This breaks the immersion for me but still cool overall. Also, you are showered with tons of randomized weapons and armor. It feels more like inventory management in an mmo rpg rather than discovering unique, lore heavy weapons. It's kinda annoying that you have to clear those weapons on your inventory tho. The Ki pulse system (which is really cool), 3 stances per weapon, and Yokai skills make the combat incredibly deep and fast closer to Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry than a traditional Souls game. It is visually satisfying but mentally draining. (well at least for me) Overall, It might not give you that addictive itch to play 10 hours straight, but it is an absolute masterpiece if you want to clear a stage, beat a boss.
A step up from the original in every conceivable way. It takes the foundation of the first game and expands upon it beautifully. Yokai Shifting is more engaging and thematically richer than Living Weapons, and the addition of Soul Cores adds incredible depth and synergy to the combat. The skill trees are more intuitive, the Dark Realm sections effectively heighten the tension, and the narrative is much more cohesive. The DLCs are also great fun to play, and they contain my favourite boss (Tate Eboshi). The new weapons were also fantastic; the Switchglaive was my choice and was great fun to use. Do you need to play the first before this? Not really. It takes place before the first game, so it doesn't even pick up - narratively speaking - where the original left off. However, toward the end of the base game, there are some story moments that are more impactful if you experienced the first one's plot. Personally, I still recommend playing Nioh 1 first because, whilst not required in any way, it brought out the full potential of this masterpiece. I could gush all day about my love for this game. Seriously a 10/10 experience for me; I'm so hyped to play Nioh 3.
What a Waste
With Nioh 2, Team Ninja somehow managed to create by far the most engaging combat system in a souls like and one of the deepest and most expansive action combat systems in any video game. That said, pretty much everything else in this game detracts from the amazing combat system. Nioh 2 misunderstands so many things about the action RPG genre. From itemization to character builds, it all feels so out of sync. The item rarity and perk system, combined with RNG item drops, make build crafting play out like an early 2000s MMO rather than a modern action RPG. Being a supposed souls like, it unfortunately has pretty middling to subpar level design depending on the mission. Enemy design is a mess too. The bosses are basically glorified elite enemies with small movesets, and enemy placement doesn't make for interesting fights throughout the levels. I don't generally mention the UI and UX in my reviews, however, I need to make an exception for this game. Nioh 2 might have THE worst, most tedious and ugliest UI I've seen in a video game in the last decade or more. Considering Nioh 1 practically had the same UI, I can't wrap my head around the fact that they didn't change or improve things significantly. This is perhaps the least surprising part, but the game world, story and characters are mind-numbingly shallow and uninteresting. With all that said, it is crystal clear that Nioh 2 doesn't have anything to offer other than its amazing melee gameplay. I just wish that potential wasn't wasted like this.
Like a lot of sequels, it's just the same game, but better. More mechanics, more compexity, but the core stays the same. Nioh 2 is really long (sometimes slow-paced in the matter of game progress) and hard to master. But, after this one, I can't bring myself to play any of the OG Souls. The combat here is so varied, fast, and rewarding, it's out of the question.
Really aggressive difficulty, even in early game. Bullet sponge enemies with blazing fast attacks and tons of damage. A very unforgiving stamina system. Everything 2-touches you. Went online to see if I was just a scrub or was missing something, everyone else was saying pretty much the same or "Nooo, you just gotta stick with it! The game really clicked for me after 45 hours!" I'm too employed for this ♥♥♥♥. You wanna scratch that samurai itch, make a katana build in Elden Ring. We'll see if Nioh 3 is less trash.
