Introduction
Today’s the infamous 420 annual event and I shall not review a stoner-themed game per se, yet the experience in Night Crisis proved somewhat psychedelic nonetheless. As the Steam debut for AlteredPlanets, this indie dev has faced an uphill battle since it picked the online MP-centric shooter genre for its first project. At least it features an original approach which should help Night Crisis stand out from more generic titles catering to a constantly growing segment of players. It wasn’t a smooth run, yet rocky starts are to be expected in our day and gaming age.
Story
First of all, what do you do as a developer when you haven’t implemented a storyline in your project? Well “improvisation” might be the keyword since Night Crisis took the sandbox route so to speak and it cuts players loose on all its maps unlocked from the moment you start the game. A barebones tutorial section is included, but combat is the only true way you’ll master the gameplay mechanics anyway. Bots have been fortunately added for both well deserved practice and those times during the day when you’ll find few human opponents in Night Crisis’ lobbies. I really wish I could discuss at least about the various factions even if there isn’t a story or campaign mode. A static screen with the basic info on the opposing forces and context, shall be highly appreciated once it may get added in a future update. Don't skip on this, AlteredPlanets. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1697704363 Usurprisingly, a war ensues between human armed forces and their former robotic allies (I told you we can’t trust those drones). For the sake of brevity and since none of this is properly mentioned in-game yet, imagine the “campaign” in Night Crisis as a Matrix-meets-Terminator type of scenario. Just shoot first and ask no further questions, ok? It’s not like battle royales or other shooter subgenres from time immemorial had logical narrative threads either. These are power fantasies and they should never get mixed up with our already bleak reality which may or may not devolve into an actual fight for survival against the robots we so desperately wish to use as future slave labour. When you sow wind you can only reap the storm. It won’t be a bountiful harvest, of that much you can be certain.
Graphics
Moddb reports that this game has been in development since 2014 and that it’s being powered by the Unity Engine. It doesn’t show its age though and my only complaints regarding Night Crisis’ looks, stem from the imbedded motion blur which REALLY needs an option for turning it off if not tone it down. This is the one setting I disable from all my games as soon as I boot them up for the first time. Blur needs to go since it not only interferes with my screenshots, but it also leads to irregular frame rate on higher resolutions. By contrast, I enjoyed the excessive chromatic aberration which adds a personal touch to this title. It actually made me question the in-game allegiance since a sober human soldier would obviously not have his vision impeded in any capacity. Perhaps it’s all a ploy for fighting the enemy from the inside? BSG-style Cylon infiltrators perhaps, but I’m probably reading too much into this. The visuals are nice, it’s a step in the right direction from regular shooters which focus on different shades of brown.
Audio
Sounds are a faltering chapter, sadly. Repetitive and not rising to the quality of the visuals it tries to complement, I ended up muting them and listening to my own tracks. Communication between myself and several human players was never hindered, even if I did play far more against the AI. The latter follows the principle of “Silence is Golden”, but it’s not like I was expecting voice acting from a title which doesn’t showcase a story to begin with. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1697704529
Gameplay
Arguably the one crucial section in which titles belonging to our subgenre in review must excel, is none other than the gameplay which must fill the gaps left by the absence of a narrative or potential audiovisual shortcomings. At the time of this writing, Night Crisis is far away from its Steam launch woes that have prevented me from getting the full picture in its case. It was thoroughly unplayable about one month ago until the dev team finally started patching it up on a weekly basis, aided by community feedback. An admirable feat, though not unexpected from any serious creator. Yeah, I know very well that MP-centric Steam games have an incredibly high chance of becoming abandonware, but hopefully Night Crisis won’t fall into this predictable pattern. That being said, it’s in dire need of a community. The lobbies aren’t really ghost towns but I didn’t find nearly as many players as I would have liked, not that I can really complain about the bots’ quality. A class system has been implemented based on weapon distribution but the most striking feature, is the sheer diversity of vehicles. These range from bikes to trucks, tanks, speedboats and no less than three helicopter models. The control scheme can be a bit clunky at times, but they’re still highly efficient methods of gaining an edge in battle. Being constantly outnumbered is no longer an issue once you pilot an attack chopper. It levels both the playing field and all resistance. Speaking of the maps, there are 13 of them included so far and they’re just as diversified as you’d expect. Urban settings, jungles, deserts, islands and some of my favorites, maps in the open sea with aircraft carriers acting as defense points or assault platforms. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1697704766
Verdict
I think that Night Crisis needs further incentives. A price drop may help in this regard along with more exposure online. A community will seldom form through word of mouth, but you don’t need a huge marketing budget to arouse sufficient interest. I do admit that I liked reading about promises of free DLC packs along with a firm pledge of no microtransactions or lootboxes. Those two are true banes of the multiplayer medium and they’re unfortunately making their rotten way towards singleplayer experiences as well. MP shooters are ironically, a gamble even when they don’t implement such concepts. Night Crisis still has an ace up its sleeve.
Strong Points
+ Pleasant graphics. + Decent AI with bots that offer adequate practice. + Gameplay diversity through maps, vehicles and weaponry.
Weak Points
- No Steam Achievements or Trading Cards. - No campaign/storyline. - Repetitive sounds. Rating 70/100
This review was submitted for Imperial Reviews through the generous contribution of Erander.
Introduction:
Night Crisis is a coop action game, strongly inspired by Battlefield franchise in many aspects. It introduces infantry, as well as aerial and vehicular combat, while also bringing up different soldier classes and level progression system. Initial idea, multiplied by quite appealing graphics, sounds like fun so far. So what could’ve possibly gone wrong? Let’s see…
The story, in-game universe and overall text quality:
The story of the game world can be found in special sub menu section. To put it in a few sentences: The Earth had enough of corrupt leaders and decided to get rid of them. Even Mother Nature itself started rioting by bringing the tornadoes and heatwaves. The corrupt leaders decided to tighten the laws and created various militaristic organizations. So the players are here to defend what’s left of freedom, natural resources and land. It’s worth mentioning that game texts are usually full of typos. However, such typos are just minor easily fixable issues, compared to the other problems of the Night Crisis.
The menu:
So, the game greets us with main menu with live 3D background. As soon you start moving your mouse, background camera moves as well. As if not enough, camera moves on high speed and also does it even during the loading times, so quite soon you’ll feel dizzy. Now, some of you may have thought of tweaking mouse speed to avoid such inconvenience and here’s another surprise: You can’t launch options in game menu. You can open OPTIONS tab during the actual match, though, but it’s needless to say that pause feature doesn’t work in online games, so such approach is quite strange and inconvenient, to say the least. Compared to everything of what was written above, the fact itself that the menu is quite clunky and needlessly overloaded with subsections, some of which have same name, isn’t even a big deal.
The gameplay:
So, Night Crisis offers 3 game modes: CP, FFA and SND: FFA is a simple defense match against AI, but unlike, for example, games, similar to Killing Floor, or No More Room In Hell, Night Crisis spices everything up with vehicles. CP is somewhat similar to Battlefield games: Players must capture and hold strategic positions, except their spawns are premade, so capturing a position won’t grant you a new spawn point. SND makes players arm and blow up the bombs, which are already placed on the map. All in all, Night Crisis offers 12 maps. Most of them need serious rework, as each has holes to fall through, or places where you can get stuck. The players must choose one of four available classes and team up in order to complete simple missions. Each killed enemy, or completed mission grant them experience for chosen class. The more experience you get, the more weapons are available for your choice. Obviously, gameplay itself at current state is still quite far from perfect. For example starting weapons have weird sway. Even if you stand still and aim, sometimes your character would activate animation of stretching, which significally lowers your chances of killing anyone. The recoil on some weapons is unbearable too, so in half of the cases it’s easier to shoot without taking steady aim. When you turn your head, your screen also sways from one side to another. Sometimes there’s also a delay between you actually turning your head and weapon moving to that side, which is really inconvenient. Now multiply that with overly bright special effects and you’ll have a feeling that you’re high on drugs and everything around is some weird illusion of your sick imagination. The vehicles are also far from being called finished: You can easily look through your tank’s cannon when you’re maneuvering it. Speaking of cannons – forget about where you aim your cannon, because the recoil on vehicles’ main weapons is too high to hit anything. As if not enough, duo to maps’ odd collision you can get stuck in a small pit, or even on a flat narrow plain. Speaking of the AI: I’m not going to cover basic infantry issues, but rather concentrate attention on drones and helicopters instead. Say, do you enjoy being spawnkilled? Well, if you do, then Night Crisis is definitely your choice, because if you die during CP, or SND match, it’s almost guaranteed endgame – enemy drones, tanks and helicopters will put you down the second you spawn.
The sound:
While big part of the sounds and music are okay, it’s still really far from being called good – the amount of bugs and weird things in this game is insane! Have you crashed a helicopter? Well, enjoy the annoying alarm sound glitch even after you died! The music in menu have weird algorithm of working, because it only works when game wants it to work.
The Graphics:
While I can’t say that graphics in this game is terrible, I can’t call it great either. I mean if we look at things separately, they look fine, in some way pretty even. But when they are combined altogether, something feels out of place. Sure, weapon and enemy models look okay, so do various special effects, but… Overall picture doesn’t. Again, it’s not bad, but something in it feels inconsistent. What you clearly can call bad, though, is the optimization, because even my decent PC had some issues during SND and CP matches. Before jumping to conclusions, here’s short list of good and bad things once again: The PRO’s:

Initial concept still looks interesting and somewhat promising. The idea of a cooperative game with decent graphics and vehicular combat is really fresh, as most big companies just ignore coop in games lately.
…and the CON’s:

Insane amount of bugs and underdeveloped things The chat doesn’t always show up at proper place. It also doesn’t always bring new messages in time. Some maps have collision issues. Server itself can simply drop the host(!) from the game. The UI is buggy at times. Some of the enemies can walk in the air. I also had huge amount of sound related problems. Game has quite some typos in words, and many other issues.
Lack of optimization Even my PC with GeForce 1060 GTX (6GB) and 16GB RAM has some FPS issues when map gets crowdy. I can only guess what issues weaker PCs may encounter.
Inconvenient moving camera at main menu I still don’t understand why the developer did such camera on the first place. It makes game look cheap and unpolished.
Clear lack of tutorials You’ll have to learn how things work during actual match. Many keys aren’t really self-explanatory, so understanding what’s what can be really annoying.

The Conclusion:
The first and most important question here is whether the game worth its money. Unfortunately, despite interesting concept I’m going to have to say NO. Not at this moment at least. What you are buying right now is a pre-alpha game which is usually shown to a small bunch of sponsors behind the closed doors. It has really simple plot, only 3 basic gamemodes and a ton of game breaking issues as a bonus. I realize that the developers put a lot of effort in their game and it’s a bit sad that, despite said efforts, I’m still giving the game a negative rating, but on the other side of things I have potential buyers who will buy the game after reading the review. And that’s a big responsibility as well. Obviously, the game is still in progress and it was released to EA recently. So despite all the criticism, I still have hopes that in a long term Night Crisis will actually shine. I’ll try to keep an eye after the game and hopefully change this review to a positive one someday.

Unplayable isn't the correct word to properly describe this game, but I've never played a game that has zero people online aside from yourself. This is suppose to be a Co-op game but I can't co-op with myself. I'll give this game another try in the future after it probably gains some traction but they would also have to update a lot of things as well. Pros: - Background moves with mouse - Game play is smooth and graphics are beautiful Cons: - No music until you enter into matchmaking section - Music then becomes extremely loud when entering game - No tutorial - No one playing it. Honestly check the video . No one was playing https://youtu.be/0NhHwBq1h8I
Far too expensive. No one is playing. It is VERY unoptimized. The visuals are very gloomy and a lot of the gameplay feels terrible. This needs to go back in the oven for a while longer before coming out to play. https://youtu.be/8CJag2l6bEk
The fact that this is €20 is an absolute CRISIS! NO JK.... First and foremost there is no SinglePlayer campaign, or linear PvE campaign or genuine co-op for that matter. The game is advertised as a epic single player campaign but all you get is 3 multiplayer modes, and it's very unclear whether or not you are actually hosting the game or playing on live servers. Same as the other reviews there was no one online when I played, where were those guys!? For the rest of the review let's use the descriptions Questions.... Q: What are the core features? Multiplayer with Aimlock AI that kill you on spawn. Q: What kind of maps can we expect? 4 maps with 3 different modes making 12 variations. Q: What can the player customize in-game? Nothing right now, just your loadout presets, and it's all locked until you progress. Q: What kind of weapons will the game have? It doesn't matter because the AI will kill you before you spawn. To play with the AI: Host your own game, set it to what ever map you want and pick anything but FFA, boom enjoy getting destroyed by enemy helicopter rockets! To be invincible, don't pick a class and just click the respawn button(Assautl) you will spawn with a scout and take no damage :)
