I've owned this game for a long time, and tried to finish it several times on different machines since then. I can't. And just as I can't, I can't leave a positive review, I simply can't recommend this game. It might be nice if you're playing co-op, but this game is meant to be enjoyed by single players as well and I certainly didn't enjoy it - nor have I been able to finish it since the controls are so terrible, which is a shame because I truly believe that the game is lovely and I would have enjoyed it, if only I could have played it without feeling absolutely frustrated. Shame, really.
CONTROLLER ISSUES (THIS MIGHT HELP) I would have left a positive review for this game had it not been for the endless bugs and controller issues experienced. Unfortunately, any positive feelings I would have had towards this game (and there would be lots of good reasons for this), have been completely lost due to the extreme frustration. However, the below may help someone not become as frustrated. This is also a note for the DEVS. After battling half way through game, I realised it was incredibly difficult because the game was switching between single player and co-op mode ON IT's OWN! Pause menu to switch this back is also then completely unavailable, helpful! Even if you do switch back, it'll switch again, usually at the best time in the gameplay for you to die, after which you are stuck in co-op mode until you close the game and reload and then the problem just repeats itself again and again. Due to this, I vowed to not play again, but gave in (because otherwise the game would be quite good). I researched the issue and it seems there are many issues dating back 11 years that have NOT BEEN FIXED still! Many patches and ridiculous fixes. Here is what actually worked: The game states it offers full controller support, it does not. Simply enable steam input (even though you should not need to and ignoring the steam warnings that now you will only have partial support.) This simple action fixed all issues (and is a lot simpler than the convoluted fixes that the devs/community came up) Game then completed, which given the issues, I was glad to see the back. Which is a shame as without this, I would probably be raving about how unique and entertaining this game was. This issues left a sour taste, given how much time it wasted and finding that the issues have prevailed since at least 2015 did nothing to help this. I cannot post a positive review as the whole experience was so frustrating, I wish I had isolated the issue early on (thought the game was just preventing me from switching between characters on purpose - to make certain sections more difficult) Given the age of these issues and seeing they have not fixed, I leave a negative review for the developers as they really need to sort this out, or simply change the controller support indicator on steam and recommended the steam input helper. Problem solved. [It is actually a clever, good game, but there are some glitches and hopefully someone will read the above and be grateful for this review - I would have been as it would have saved me from screaming obscenities at my pc!]
I have a particular love for game experiences that teach me about subjects connected to our world. Never Alone (Kisima Innitchuna) is based on the traditional Inupiaq tale, Kunuuksaayuka. This game can be played alone or co-operatively (local only). I played the entire game in one sitting with my partner. It made for a fun evening game session. Never Alone is a platformer with two main characters. I'm not sure how they're controlled while playing solo but with co-op, each player controls one of them. Players do not get a choice of the characters. Player One plays as the human character and Player Two gains control of the non-human character. The controls are simple though occasionally don't feel responsive. Overall I thought this was a beautiful adaptation that would make for a lovely afternoon gaming session with a friend as it took less than two hours to complete (and that's with quite a few game overs). I recommend this game to those interested in multiplayer experiences, short games, storytelling, animal characters, or wintry settings.
Finally got around to playing this after having it in my library for years. Never Alone tells a timeless story in a gameplay mold very much of a... certain time in the medium being a cinematic platformer. Look, I love this subgenre: Limbo is phenomenal! I'm sure Inside is fantastic! And, I adore the original two Little Nightmares games. Never Alone is a little rougher around the edges than any of these. You'll have a lot of dumb deaths despite very generous checkpoints as certain segments - namely the ones where a threat is chasing you - demand a weird amount of precision for something otherwise very doable if it weren't for the bola... Whoever thought the bola should control the way it does was maybe a little too avant-garde for my tastes; I say that as a huge advocate for experimental control styles. In theory, the stick makes a lot of sense for bola throwing as you mirror your character winding her arm back to fling it in her desired arc. That is, to say, it's not your desired arc. Maybe some finer angling or just a simple pull back to prime the throw with the added trigger press would have done the trick just as fine to achieve the same sensation. Anyway, some gameplay irks aside, Kisima Ingitchuna is very much worth your time if for the fact it's incredibly short alone (as you can see by my playtime). It's always important we're getting lesser seen perspectives/cultures in video games - especially for the time this came out. The fact you get such an atmospheric exploration of Inupiat spiritualism and an encouraging, universal message out of this makes the so-so gameplay serviceable to me. If anything, I'm very excited to see how the sequel turns out now that indie games have become even more refined since this game's release even if indigenous stories in games are still very few and far between. Will have to keep my eye out for that one!
Will you be my player 2?
History is pretty simple and fun to play. Game has few bugs, unfortunately, but you shouldn't have any problems in completing the game (the autosave feature is frequent here). Just keep in mind that if you want to get 100% achievements, you have to buy DLC as well, where the story is much worse than in the base game. Don't worry tho, it doesn't take long to finish. Title was bundled few times, so you can buy it really cheap in different keyshops.
Recommended to play with co-op partner (only local co-op and alternatively remote play).
This game is artistically beautiful. No replayability but worth playing it on a full walkthrough
This game is so beautiful. I replayed it recently with my partner, who also loved it. I would love to see more educational games like this. I loved being introduced to a culture I know nothing about.
Culturally and story-wise, it's decent. As a platformer, though, it's a little rough around the edges, since you're controlling two characters at once. The number of times the second character jumps to its death is ridiculous.
