a good 2d platformer, with fun mechanics, bosses and a cute art style

this game was an interesting approach in some genres: + interesting shadow light play + riddles + kawaii factor + good soundtrack + simple but cool + kinda mix between metroidvania-htol- etc. + bizarre world - rather short - sometimes i dont understand the story, cause the story is told in picture-speechbubbles? - sometimes the game kinda freezes. dunno why.... I use my shadow as stepladder next 13/10
My Experience
Nevaeh is a simple and short puzzle platformer, with a lot of charm and warmth. I don't think there's any better way to describe it as that's the most attractive factor about the games. It's a very charming, very warm game presented in a monochrome, storybook, fairytale kind of way. I don't believe I have much else to talk about really, as much as I loved the game. Like I said its a simple and fairly short puzzle platformer that'll only take you 3-4 hours to beat. The platforming is smooth and feels good. The main gimmick of the game is the magic butterfly that emits light. You would use it to activate lamps, cast shadows, etc... The game somehow keeps playing with the mechanic in different fun ways while remaining relatively simple so that someone as stupid as I can actually beat it without a guide. It also has several boss fights, all of which are based on casting lights and shadows in ways to hurt the boss with them or by directing their own attacks against themselves. For most of the game, you have to enter into a main hub tower of sorts, and go into each section in order to defeat the boss and restore a section of the town. During exploration of those sections, you can also go out of your way to get some treasure chests with gems, or find rooms with herbs you need to restore the townspeople. Each townsperson also has a little sidequest with them just for fun. But one of them, a sorceress, can actually take your gems and let you invest in upgrades. Yeah, there's upgrades in this game, I'm shocked too. But honestly they didn't feel needed. The store page already spells a lot of this stuff out, so I'm just rattling on. Lets nitpick some negatives. I do absolutely love the way that the story is presented, that its this thing straight out of a fairytale or a children's story book, but everything is also entirely presented in little cute illustrations. That is a complete 50/50 on whether it comes off as charming and sweet to you or really annoying as it makes things hard to follow. Frankly, I still don't understand what that big twist was at the end. There are some explosions in the early game. The radius seems to be slightly bigger than it actually appears, and that by the time you see the effect seems to have dissipated you can actually take damage walking into it. It looks like the highest resolution the game can be is 720p. I was playing on a 2k screen but it wasn't a problem. Only thing of note is that the edges of the animated characters are clearly pixelated. But like I said, it didn't bother me. The game seems to default to your system language, and if it doesn't support it then all the text is in Korean. The menu navigation is not very clear to try and guess which option is which, so its literally easier to go into the save game data externally, and modify the langauge selection there to english. I've had two small freezes happen in places in the game, and if my memory serves me correct it's only when I tried using the butterfly during a boss fight. It's a brief freeze and you can easily get out of by trying to use the butterfly again. There was one occasion though where I was softlocked but that was fixed by simply shutting the game down and starting it again.
Conclusion
Overall, I immensely enjoyed it and would recommend it as a short, fun, interesting and charming experience. It's a game that has lots of warmth to give and doesn't overstay its welcome. If anything, it also introduced me to a developer I might want to keep an eye out for. I will note that the base price might be a bit steep for the amount of content this game offers, but it might be because of regional pricing. Take the price into great consideration, as it might not be worth the whole experience. Please remember to check other reviews to make a properly informed decision about purchasing this game. I am but one man speaking from my own experience and with my own preferences.
