During the opening hour of Forgotton Anne, as protagonist Anne ventured into the world of forgotten animate objects in search of a dastardly rebellion, I was impressed by the art style and animation. However, as time went on, even though the game presents interesting character and world design, I started to like this game less and less. The pacing was dreadfully slow with a plot that doesn't throw anything too crazy your way, with not that much interesting going on. The actual exploration was not very engaging and occasionally clunky, certainly not anything that would give the game a good score in my books. In the end I'd have to say that Forgotton Anne is a game with fun character design and an interesting world but wastes it with a mediocre plot and boring gameplay.
I just loved this story. I don't know exactly what hooked me so deeply, but I completed the game twice (technically thrice because of
two different endings and the final tarot cards that are a result of all your moral choices throughout the playthrough
). The first run was just for the experience, and the second time was for the achievements, particularly "The Pacifist" and I loved it just as much as the first time. All spoilers are hidden behind spoiler tags! First of all, the story of the main character, Anne, is beautiful and multifaceted. Her upbringing, job, family, and beliefs shape her personality, and you can see that no matter what dialogue choices you make, she is fundamentally a good person. It surprised me how much I liked that simple fact about her throughout the story. Second, the world of the forgotlings. Every character I met was so charming and uniquely animated, especially those who influenced the main plot. It truly felt like a lived-in city, complete with its dark and touching moments, like when you eavesdrop on a hushed conversation or read a lost, tragic love letter. Later in the game,
you unlock the Arca ability, which lets you see short, one-sentence backstories about the forgotlings' previous owners. I just love how it either perfectly explains their character (like Magnum being the weapon of a cruel, corrupt cop), or is unexpectedly heartbreaking (like Jinx being a voodoo doll made for a lost daughter)
. I've seen some fan theories about the worldbuilding, certain crucial events, and metaphors, and while I agree with some of them, I still believe that Bonku
truly loved Anne as an adoptive daughter, despite his cruel words and selfish actions. To me, it’s a found-family story. Both Anne and Bonku had several moments where they didn't have the time or opportunity to explain themselves, and both endings are tragic for them. Speaking of endings, it’s a heartbreaking detail that they are both forgotlings, but in one ending they are forgotten by both worlds, while in the other they are remembered in the Forgotten Lands, which is incredibly bittersweet.
Moreover, I love the underlying theme that your purpose in life isn't strictly dictated by the human world. I especially love how subtly it's handled. You meet several forgotlings who prove that even if they still cling to their original, predetermined purpose, many of them not only gained a soul but also found a new home and a new life. Even Fig
isn't just a mannequin or a rebel leader; he is shown as an amazing actor while his truly Shakespearean monologue in one of the game's most hilarious scenes
. Speaking of Fig, his character is AWESOME. I don't know exactly what makes me like him sooo much: his backstory, charisma, mindset, animations, or personality (which are all AMAZING), or the actor behind the English voice, Daniel Pierce, who just did a marvelous job. I also entirely blame the voice actor for making every interaction with Anne feel like it has a double meaning. I know a romantic route when I see one – they are flirting, Your Honor!
(Such a pity that it’s doomed)
Finally, the Ukrainian localization was wonderful. However, there is a specific conversation between Anne and Bonku right before
the visit to the Plant
where the dialogue options were left untranslated. Also, there’s a nuance in Ukrainian regarding the "you" pronoun (the informal tone for friends/family vs. the formal/polite tone for strangers, elders, or professional settings). The context often implies it should switch between formal (e.g., to strangers or "Mister Fig") and informal (like with Anne's close friends, or when "Mister Fig" becomes just "Fig"), but the translation sometimes rigidly sticks to the formal tone. This is just a minor nitpick, but it would be great if the devs could look into this for future patches. To sum it up, it’s an amazing, touching story. I enjoyed it immensely, and this game deserves so much more attention.
⭐ Steam Review for: Forgotton Anne ⭐ ⏱️ Playtime: 9.7 Hours I absolutely loved this game ❤️ From the very beginning, there was something about the world that completely pulled me in. And the more I played, the more invested I became in the world and its characters. It's one of those games where I kept wanting to see what was around the next corner, meet the next character, and learn a little more about the world. It managed to make me care about its world, its characters, and the choices being made without ever feeling overly complicated.👱♂️🤺🎭 What starts as a beautiful fantasy adventure slowly becomes something much deeper, and I found myself genuinely caring about what happened to everyone along the way. The game does a great job of making situations feel more complicated than they first appear, which makes the choices and story moments hit even harder. 🕰️✨ I got surprisingly attached to a lot of the characters too. Even when I didn't spend much time with them, they still felt memorable and made the world feel alive.🪶🧹👞 The world itself is so creative. I loved the idea behind forgotten objects having their own place and personalities. It made exploring feel special because there was always something interesting to discover or someone new to meet. It felt magical, but also strangely believable. Every new area made me curious. I loved discovering little details about the world and how everything fit together.🪞💬✨ I also really enjoyed the gameplay and puzzles. They were challenging enough to make me think without becoming frustrating, and they fit naturally into the story instead of feeling like obstacles thrown in just to slow you down.🚂🔧 The art style is absolutely gorgeous. The entire game feels like you're playing through an animated movie. Every area is beautiful, and the hand-drawn visuals gave the whole experience so much charm and personality. There were so many moments where I just appreciated how much care had gone into the visuals and atmosphere. It wasn't just a story I was watching unfold, I felt like I was really involved in it.✨ The puzzles were fun, the gameplay felt smooth, the art style is absolutely gorgeous, and the music fits the atmosphere perfectly. But honestly, even if all of that wasn't there, the story alone would have carried this game for me. Because I enjoyed the story so much. 👩🏻🦰🪽 The game does a really good job of showing that situations aren't always black and white, and that people can see the same problem in completely different ways. I spent a lot of time thinking about who I agreed with and whether I was making the right decisions. What I loved is how it slowly shifts your understanding without ever forcing it. You begin to realise that every side believes they are justified, and every action has a reason behind it. It genuinely made me reflect on how easily perspective can shape reality. With just a slight change in viewpoint, the same situation can feel completely different. Someone you once saw as “wrong” can suddenly feel understandable, even sympathetic. That idea resonated with me a lot personally. The thing I loved most about Forgotton Anne is that it made me care. Not just about what was happening, but about the world, the characters, and the choices being made. The further I got into the story, the more invested I became. I kept telling myself "just one more chapter" and before I knew it, hours had passed. It felt like one of those rare games where I became completely immersed and forgot about everything else for a while. The credits rolled, and all I could think was: I wish I could experience this for the first time again. So…. I immediately bought Forgotlings - Collector’s Edition. I just wasn’t ready to leave this world yet. The story, the atmosphere, and the characters stuck with me so much that I needed to go back into it somehow. That’s probably the biggest compliment I can give this game, I didn't want it to end.❤️🩹
I can't use the bridge in the latest game version on Steam. Please fix this issue quickly, or I will leave a bad review.
An excellent game, it's like watching a beautiful cartoon and taking part in it, beautiful graphics, and at a discount it's a real gift, I'd say a small masterpiece.
That was a fun adventure. Great art and interesting setting. It is mainly traversal, talking with others, and puzzles; so it isn't really difficult. The movement can be a bit clunky at times, but jumping around and parkour can be somewhat forgiving with ledge grabbing to counter that. All in all I am glad I played it!
