Mystery Case Files: The Black Veil Collector's Edition

Okay, so I finished this game several months after I started, so some of this is partly recollection of the first half of the game. I'll start with the con list since it's a fine game otherwise. (I may edit this when I replay the game at some point) [b]CONS[/b]: - The biggest things for me for collector's editions are the bonus games. This one is...really underwhelming. It was really, really short, didn't really help explain anything about the villain, and leaves me with more questions than answers (which would be fine if I got anything else out of it). [b]PROS [/b]: - Overall, pretty fun to play - not too difficult on the puzzles for the most part, and the multi-step ones are great. - Cutscenes are nicely done. So are the goddess of death and settings designs. - The setting is pretty moody and doesn't let that go. - Some of the themes/topics are a bit darker than I expected for a MCF game (though to be fair, I've only played a handful at this point). But getting [spoiler] stabbed in a cutscene from first person POV, seeing the villain stab a tied-up man to death in the bonus game, and having the villain treat the Master Detective like a child he raised (and supposedly manipulated through his whole life) [/spoiler] are things I don't see very often in other HOG series. - The villain motivation is not selfless or well-intentioned in the slightest. I can both feel slightly bad for him and also absolutely not feel bad for him at all. And the [spoiler] goddess of death is not portrayed as an inherently bad being; she is what she is and the villain is trying to make her something she isn't [/spoiler]. [b]MEH[/b]: - That said, some of the areas-of-interest you have to click into aren't as noticeable or intuitive as I'd like, and sometimes the placement of an interactive item was just too close to the step back option. - I wish we got a little more insight/answers on the villain because I can sorta piece together his motivation, but it's not quite as striking as I want it to be.

Game does not have as many hidden object scenes as other games in the series. This title is primarily a puzzle, point-and-click game. If that's the sort of game you're looking for however, then it does those things competently.

I really like the style of the Eipix games. The story is really cool and the game itself is even on insane not too hard to play. Even though i never played dire grove, due to not available windows 7, i still like the recurring of characters in game series. The bonus level was pretty short but a really nice addition to the main game. I can really recommend this game

I usually recommend this type of game, especially to younger people. It's fun, it's pretty, and it can be challenging, which is the point. Plus, this one in particular features great voice acting and story-telling. Plus plus, I love the spooky ambience.

Shame how they butchered the MCF series. This game is so bad that even if it was free, I'd advise you to not play it. Puzzles are too childish for adults, story is too dark for kids. So well done Big Fish! You manage to make a game that no one will enjoy!

Very good game as are the majority of the Mystery Case Files. Played the game in hardest mode and was not overly hard. Good story line great graphics. The Bonus chapter was very short would recommend.

Nice moderately long surreal/horror (Disney x H.R. Giger) point and click game! The many puzzle types are mixed in terms of skill level required to solve them and draw from many disciplines to diversify the solution strategies and modes of game operation to avoid repetition. I skipped a few tough or tedious puzzles but in hindsight I would have used the guide more. An adult option would have been much appreciated in terms of giving the designer greater freedom to depict and explore the dark themes that were present but greatly softened no doubt by the desire to avoid inflaming and triggering today's regrettably oversensitive marketplace.
