Very good game, I really wish there was more to play. The atmosphere of this game is fantastic and the jump scares get you good. If you were a fan of early 2000s mlp horror before it was wiped from youtube you will love this game. PLEASE FINISH THIS GAME.
My Putrid Ponies is a strange, unsettling, and surprisingly effective survival horror experience that leans hard into its offbeat premise to carve out a distinct identity. Developed and published by Ajolote Dev, the game takes a deliberately absurd concept—zombie ponies overrunning a ranch—and treats it with earnest horror sensibilities rather than parody. The result is a short but atmospheric experience that relies on tension, scarcity, and environmental storytelling to leave a lasting impression, even in its current Early Access state. The setting is deceptively simple: an abandoned ranch once associated with warmth and innocence has become the epicenter of a grotesque outbreak. From the moment players step into the environment, the contrast between familiar pastoral imagery and decayed, hostile surroundings establishes a strong sense of unease. The narrative is delivered indirectly through exploration, visual cues, and scattered hints rather than explicit exposition, encouraging players to piece together what went wrong and why the ponies became something monstrous. This understated approach works in the game’s favor, allowing imagination and atmosphere to do much of the storytelling heavy lifting. Exploration forms the backbone of the experience. Players move through barns, paddocks, corridors, and maze-like interiors that emphasize isolation and disorientation. The level design is compact but intentionally restrictive, creating narrow sightlines and limited escape routes that heighten anxiety during encounters. While the overall structure is fairly linear, it is paced in a way that steadily builds dread, alternating between quiet investigation and sudden confrontations. Environmental details—lighting, clutter, and unsettling visual cues—contribute significantly to immersion, making even empty spaces feel threatening. Combat is deliberately limited and focused almost entirely around the shotgun, reinforcing the game’s survival horror roots. Ammunition is scarce, and enemies can be deceptively resilient, forcing players to think carefully before pulling the trigger. Every encounter becomes a risk calculation: is it worth spending precious shells now, or is avoidance the smarter option? This design choice succeeds in maintaining tension, though it also exposes some rough edges in enemy behavior and AI consistency. At times, foes feel more like obstacles than adaptive threats, highlighting the game’s early development stage. The zombie ponies themselves are the game’s most memorable feature. Their design walks a fine line between grotesque and uncanny, leveraging the discomfort of corrupted innocence rather than relying on traditional horror monsters. This subversion is what gives the game much of its impact, turning what could have been a joke premise into something genuinely unsettling. The sound design further enhances this effect, with distorted noises, distant movement, and sudden audio cues that keep players constantly on edge. As an Early Access title, My Putrid Ponies is clearly limited in scope. Most playthroughs can be completed in a relatively short amount of time, and the experience currently feels more like a contained chapter or extended prologue than a full game. For some players, this brevity is acceptable given the low price point and focused design, while others may find it lacking in replay value or depth. Quality-of-life features and mechanical variety are minimal, and occasional technical hiccups remind players that this is a work in progress rather than a finished product. Despite these limitations, the game’s strongest asset is its commitment to atmosphere and tone. It never undercuts its horror with humor, instead fully committing to its unsettling world and trusting players to engage with it seriously. This sincerity elevates the experience beyond novelty and suggests a clear creative vision behind the project. The positive reception from the community reflects an appreciation for this focus, as well as optimism about the game’s future development. Overall, My Putrid Ponies is a compact but memorable survival horror experience that stands out through its unusual concept and effective use of tension. While it currently lacks the depth, polish, and content of a full release, it demonstrates a strong grasp of horror fundamentals and a willingness to take creative risks. For players interested in atmospheric indie horror with a surreal twist—and who are comfortable supporting an evolving Early Access project—it offers a chilling glimpse into a world that feels both absurd and disturbingly sincere. cool game cool concept but its basically nightmare mode 24/7 and you never know when you get a save point so you can't manually save a game it just does it without telling you and the ammo pool is so tiny it makes the shotgun useless if you get it, makes the game more like a nightmare mode simulator/walk through type of game if they add a save point to location areas and a main menu save slot it would help make it easier. the monsters look cool and are cool but they are extremely sensitive to legit anything so even playing the game at the very start you'll die alot and it is very frustrating. i like the story of the game so far its scary and fun but the gameplay is a bit like silent hill 2 accept even silent hill 2 gives you more ammo than this game and in SH2 you never have ammo on a good day lol. you also dont have a melee weapon so you will die very very often. i'll also add that if you shoot the monsters as they kill you the game will freeze and you'll be stuck on a screen and have to close the whole game and loose your progress "if it even saved which you dont know as theres no clear save points/save menu" if they make ammo easier to obtain and update the game to have better save areas and slots i can see it being quite fun! but in its current state it feels like a chore to play it, instead of it being an exiting experience to play i wouldn't reccomend buying this game until its fixed/updated
I have mixed feelings about this game. While the game itself is interesting, there are some pretty annoying bugs. After I die it respawns me all the way back to the very beginning. I have to close and relaunch the game to fix it, sometimes it took multiple restarts for it to actually work. Other than that, the game is good and I hope that bug gets fixed soon.
I love this little game so far. After a drought of updates for a full year, (apparently the Developer only posts update information on their Discord Server, which is fine, at least they post it somewhere.) they pushed out several big bug fixes, achievements and even a free DLC! I cannot wait to see how this charming horror game develops!
In the first 3 minutes of gameplay I fell through the world twice. The first time, I fell by crouching through the ground. The second time, I fell by walking to the right of the path before the first prowler encounter. Also, I noticed that sometimes there is no audio queue for the prowlers chasing (they have a walking version of chasing in which no audio queue is played, but they are clearly deviating from their typical pathing to chase the player). Despite the prowlers being described as lacking vision and relying on hearing, they can see surprisingly well. An enemy type like this should not be able to detect a silent player so easily. Sneaking is supposed to reduce the likelihood of being caught, yet it has no noticeable impact on detection deterrence. The pathing of the prowlers is so all-encompassing that I can't get past the eating prowler (the one next to the second glowstick).
I LOVE THIS GAME PLEASEEEE KEEP MAKEING MORE
Interesante y prometedor.
