About
In a world where all of humanity is trapped inside a single massive vault, fight to discover a cure for the sickness that plagues them by descending into the abandoned lower levels. Only you can survive the horrors that await within the depths of the Mother Hub.
Terrifying creatures have both evolved, and mutated here. They lurk in the dark corners waiting to feast on your flesh. Either become soaked in their blood, or your own.
It has been over centuries since the golden age of the Hub, during that time there were endless advancements in technology. Now that's all been lost, it's up to you to rediscover it.
The once pristine walls of the Mother Hub have decayed, a new world has surfaced within its midst, one where nature has taken hold, and evolved on its own. Unknown species of plants, animals, and something terrible thrive as you descend deeper into the past.
The farther you go, the more you'll learn about what went wrong here. You'll see how your character Thea plays a pivotal role not only in saving humanity, but how she is herself is intertwined within these walls. Listen to audio logs, read emails, find ancient writings, and documents as well as experience strange flash backs all giving you clues to the truth of your situation.
No. I tried really hard for this guys but the system is really old I built Mother Hub on.
About 2 hours. If you are experienced it might be closer to 1:45, and if you take your time it's closer to 3.
The good
[*] World-building is pretty solid, even for such a short game [*] The action-adventure feels like action-adventure, where I can honestly say that at every level in the game I felt like I was stepping into the unknown. [*] The combat, albeit a bit easy for a game with the "horror" tag attached, is generally satisfying enough, with monsters that don't feel boring. [*] The narrative delivered via voice logs and communications is not a new concept but works pretty well in this game. [*] Since "retro" can mean anything, and video doesn't convey gameplay feeling, the game looks like a polished Quake 3 engine game, but plays like a polished Quake 2 engine game.
The bad
[*] The game being as short as it is, there's not much of a world, so the levels can feel a bit confined and linear (yes, even for a retro game). [*] Where the story-telling is generally fine, I feel like the intro dropped the pooch, so some things connected late in the game or very late in the game, somewhat removing from the story's impact or significance. [*]
Where the rat robot is fun, it feels like a wasted opportunity to make the level better for some fan service-style comedy literally every game nowadays has.
[*] The level design has a postcard problem - areas that could feel monumental are locked away as inaccessible backdrops. Looking at the trailer, the world feels big, but in the actual gameplay, some areas only feel like they could be monumental - the shortness of the level, the accumulation of clutter on the floor that makes it so that you never "look up", and that the truly large parts as inaccessible scenery make the game feel claustrophobic even under a 300ft roof.
What I'm arguing for is that there could have been "wasted space" accessible to the player in this game that would have made the relatively short levels feel large.
[*] Some elements of story-telling feel rushed and remain unexplained or under-delivered. For example, I still have no idea what's up with the red cube thing we see in the trailer. [*] There are some pretty good world-building and story-development ideas in the game that are absolutely gutted by the shortness of the game.
For example you have the .. person(?) stuck to a wall early on, that implies some sort of alien-like "almost alive but conscious" people, same with the exploding robot(?) that puts you in the red cube's "dimension". Same for some of the monsters, which appear without preamble or a sort of feeling of belonging only in a short area/part of an area. The area boss fights aren't as epic as they could've been, nor are they announced properly - for example I fought the "hand" thing in the trailer, killed it, and was looking around for more, as I thought that was just the beginning - also I am disappointed how small that fight felt compared to how it looked in the trailer.
[*] The horror isn't that horrifying, but this goes back to the relative shortness and pacing of the levels. If you go in as the Doom guy on vacation in a slightly less ♥♥♥♥ universe rather than someone here to be scared, you'll have a good time. All in all 7/12, top marks, would recommend to a friend.
Not a bad DooM3-like shooter with a female protagonist. Nice solo work!
Game is okay, was hoping for more. I dont mind the graphics or the simplistic story but its the gameplay bugs that ruin it. Some colliders on walls are missing so you just fall through the map and have to reload. The player tends to get stuck on things often. Would have liked a bit more difficulty. There are heals and ammo every 5 feet so it doesn't even matter if you take damage.
It'd be alright to pick up on sale - I'd give it a 3/5. TLDR - Lots of ideas, very few followed up, but a decent short game if picked up on sale with 2-3 hours story. Pros - +This game feels like it has a lot of inspiration from the System Shock series as far as way of story telling and interactions. +Lots of different voice actors for the journals. +Moderately interesting story. +Beginning area is very interactive. Cons -There's a lot of ideas here but many instances where you only use a mechanic once or twice. -There seems like a decision impact based on how you reply but when you get to the end, that doesn't seem to affect anything. -Voice acting often falls flat (but some are good). -Ending seems very rushed. Big buildup about 'what I'll do when I get back' and it is not even summarized in splash screens at the end describing various endings. -Final half is nowhere near as interactive as the first half. *edit* -Forgot to add there's some weird collision issues and at least one wall you can just walk through to your death. I'd like to see a version of this or another game like it more fully flushed out from this dev. There's decent bones here but it kind of feels like a showcase for a resume where you show you have all these ideas, but never really follow them all through to the end.
I am SO glad I stumbled across this game. Excellent storytelling, fun combat, and an engaging story. You know it's a good one when you're sad for it to end. Also, not to be slept on is the VOICE TALENT in this game! The story is told through logs you find along the way, most of which are voiced exceptionally well, adding even more depth and eeriness to an already very unsettling environment.
This game has the right mix of unsettling atmosphere, mystery and the search for answers feels meaningful throughout the game. I see similaries with games like System Shock and Dead Space here. Being inspired by great games that came before you is a good thing by the way. The vibe in this game was actually pretty unsettling at times. The fact that this game was made by a solo dev makes me much more forgiving about minor bugs and oddities. Sometimes you can get stuck on geometry and have to jump/crawl to wiggle free and sometimes enemies bounce around after being defeated and kind of float on the floor. Not being able to rebind the controls seems to bother many people when I had a look in the forum. Lucky for me the controls that is, are the ones I prefer anyway. The fact that every room seems to be crawling with audiologs just waiting to be found felt a bit much at times. I get it, it is a way to tell the story without having it tied to specific actions in the game. But sometimes you spent more time listening to audiologs than exploring. In the end though, that didn't bother me too much because the quality of the voice acting is really good and it added a great deal to the the mood and the feeling of lonelyness when playing. I like the world this game is set in and would really like to see more stories set in it. I just put this note here in the end, in case someone else run into the same problem. When I first started the game the controls were acting up. Something was auto mouse-looking in one direction constantly which made the game unplayable. I tried to fix it but couldn't and ended up refunding the game, thinking it was the game that was broken. Turns out the fault was in my computer. I have a 3DConnexion 3D mouse and it comes with some emulation-trick drivers letting it appear as a gamepad. Disabling the 3DConnexion input emulation drivers, made mouselook work again. I am glad I found out before the sale was over, so I could buy the game again and play it. I am glad I did, because it was a great one.
A solid first-person survival horror game made by a single developer, inspired by System Shock, Doom 3, and Dead Space. Great atmosphere, lots of lore, but at the end, I had no idea what the story was about. It is also too easy, with plenty of resources scattered around, with no difficulty options. Overall, it's cheap, short, and decent.
