Given the chance I would do unholy things to Demona… As a kid I loved this game. Playing it again for the first time in more than 2 decades I found it really frustrating… It's amazing what we found fun and engaging when we had no other alternatives! Nonetheless I was really looking forward to Gargoyles Remastered but man… what a letdown. The original was FAR from a classic but nostalgic nonetheless and I mistakenly thought we’d be getting something along the lines of DuckTales: Remastered or Castle of Illusion… Both of those brought in graphic overhauls AND added voice acting to really flesh out the experience and excite the fan base. When I heard Keith David’s iconic intro newly re-recorded for the Gargoyles RM launch trailer, topped with Limited Runs exclusive top tier version physical release with additional dialogue spoken upon opening the box, I thought “Obviously Keith David recorded SOMETHING for the game” but sadly… I was again, mistaken. I also couldn’t get over just how bare-bones the game was in terms of any additional content. Games like DuckTales Remastered, The Disney Afternoon Collection, TMNTs Cowabunga Collection, The Disney Classics Collection, etc all included loads of extra content: Concept Art, Original Packaging, International Packaging, Posters, Magazine Ads, etc. Gargoyles has literally nothing. It doesn’t even have so much as a BEZEL for the original version! The graphics ARE exceptional but the gameplay is AWFUL. Hits don’t seem to land on enemies, like the “combat” isn’t lined up so it’s more like hitting THROUGH the enemy, making it difficult to know which hits actually land. Then, objects you have to interact with are incredibly difficult to trigger and the damage you take from the environment is just unreal. Forgot to mention that the Rewind feature is the WORST I have ever experienced. In a way, I’m glad I purchased this Steam version (being so anxious to jump in) because doing so encouraged me to immediately cancel the physical pre-order I had with Limited Run. This was most definitely not for overall fans of the series. I don’t really know who this was for… maybe the handful of people that felt the original Genesis game was a masterpiece? (That would be a small group). I wish there were enough people to get the developer to AT LEAST release an update that would fix the horrible gameplay but I’m sure this was a “release it and forget it” venture. The game is worth $4.99 tops. I’d take a $10 credit and keep the game over a $15 full refund just for the sake of having it in hopes something changed but I know I’m stuck with this $15 thumbnail I’ll never click on again. Unfortunately, the original Genesis game was a turd and this remaster was just polishing it to begin with… but with maybe some clear coat? IDFK.. Such a letdown… Would have been great if Way Forward had done it. They did an amazing job with the DuckTales Remaster… which was 1000 times better than this. It’s so sad to think that the DuckTales Remaster AND the Castle of Illusion Remaster, of which are both FAR superior to this Gargoyles Remaster, were both released ten years ago now. I’m still kicking myself for not requesting a refund from Steam. And if you think I am being way too hard on it, I’m not. I was looking SO forward to this. I had it pre-ordered and pre-installed. On the morning it came out I repeatedly tried to launch until the release was official and when it finally loaded… I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. My wife’s boyfriend (also a HUGE Gargoyles fan) felt exactly the same. Such a letdown. Yeah, you can slap a shiny new coat of paint on a turd, still gonna be a turd. And this game was a turd. Gargoyles deserved so much better. 2/10 and I’m being generous.
As a huge Gargoyles fan, I cannot recommend this game. It looks and feels like something that needed more QA passes before it shipped. I say this because: 1.) The version number that appears when you pause the game is v0.6.5, not v1.0 or something similar. 2.) The remastered assets are a mess. Some character sprites are larger than their original counterparts, obfuscating the sizes of the hit/hurt boxes; some level sprites aren't tiled properly, showing visible seams where there shouldn't be any (most noticeable in the Rookery levels); some background sprites are missing detail compared to their original counterparts (most noticeable in the Forge levels); some sprites do not display properly despite the originals displaying perfectly fine (most noticeable in the Subterranean levels); and in one case the remastered asset is just a blurry, stretched version of its original counterpart (seen in the Subterranean levels). The art itself is fine, and overall more legible than what's in the original given the Sega Genesis's small color palette, but the presentation feels inconsistent and incomplete. 3.) While I did not encounter any crashes, I still experienced many strange bugs. One time the game stopped playing background music exclusively when using the remastered assets; sometimes music playing when using the remastered assets would not match what was playing when switching to the original assets; and like several others reported in the Discussions board, I could not get the "Variety Pack" achievement to trigger no matter how many robot enemies I defeated. 4.) Gamepad button mapping options are limited to swapping what the Xbox X, A, and B buttons do. I played through this game using Retro-Bit's 2.4 Ghz wireless Sega Saturn Pro Controller, so not being able to remap actions off of Xbox X, A, and B or change the Rewind and Mode Switch buttons made controlling the game more awkward than I would have liked. All this has me wondering if this game should've received a remaster in the first place. What we got clearly needed more time in the oven, and even if it did receive all the time it needed, it would be tethered to the original's iffy collision detection, loose camera, and sluggish, stop-and-start movement. As such, I feel we would've been better off with a full-on remake that addresses those shortcomings. Given how little Disney seems to care for Gargoyles, though, I suppose we should be thankful we even got this.
This is example of how not to do a remaster. +: * gameplay hasn't changed * there are achievements -: * the remastered graphics suck * the huge input lag * this version is worse than on the emulator verdict: 4/10
STOP. If you are expecting another quality Disney 2D platform classic remaster as per Duck Tales Remastered or Castle of Illusion, run for the hills, because this ain't it. Gargoyles wasn't exactly an artistic tour de force when originally released for the Sega Genesis in 1995, but somehow Empty Clip Studios managed to make it worse. The graphics are ugly and jarring, the collision detection is absolutely hideous with the titular hero's sprites twice as large as the hit box, none of the special movements are explained and my personal favourite: this is one of those games where when you jump off the edge of a platform, it works perhaps 25% of the time. You know the ones. 1990 is calling, it wants its platformers back. There are no extras whatsoever unlike the aforementioned games, it is just a generally miserable experience. One upside is you can switch to the original graphics, which is helpful because the new graphics sometimes obscure being able to see what you're doing. Avoid this steaming pile of trash at all costs.
I love Gargoyles and I'm really happy to find this classic remastered on Steam! It's based on one of the best ever animated series, for all who don't know. New graphics are great and the option to rewind time makes it a lot easier. What this remaster does better than most others is that you always can switch to the original 1995 game, so nothing is lost here. Like Goliath said: WE LIVE AGAIN!
I wanted to like this, as a decade old fan of gargoyles that somehow missed this game back when. But that handling is just a pain and the hitboxes don't seem to match.
Nun, als Fan der Gargoyle-Serie sollte man sich dieses Spiel holen und die überarbeitete Grafik lässt sich durchaus sehen. Auch hat es einen gewissen Nostalgiewert ein Spiel mit altem System zu spielen.
I've heard from a super dedicated fan that the show is dark, really dark, especially compared to Disneys other works. This is my first, proper impression of the Gahgols IP and lemme tell you, the only "dark" thing about this game is how I spent 14,79€ on this garbage ROM port. It shouldn't even be 2€. Darkoyles.
🌬️ Wait, the Gargoyles game was never that good? That's right. This remaster is a literal reskin of the original, and I'm surprised people are complaining about the awkward hitboxes and other issues, because they've always been there (even old boss abuses work). It's unfairly difficult in places, slightly confusing, and has some frustrating platforming sections. This release is cheap, and while the graphics are generally okay, there's nothing else here. No extra content, nice bonuses, or anything. You can switch to the original graphics at any time, but it would have been better if they'd fixed this game with the remaster, leaving the original game as a standalone. I love «Gargoyles» and am glad they remembered it at least like this, but I wouldn't recommend this game; it's mediocre. If you still want to play it, then do it on easy, spam the crouch attack on almost all enemies and don’t hesitate to use rewind, for the sake of your nerve cells.
