While this game might have been inspired from several sources it unfortunately comes off as a game that could have been better; more style over substance. First off I enjoy the graphics. It took a while to get used to the oddly proportioned characters but there isn’t many games that has this weird look. The gameplay is very run of the mill, with not much else that stands out. The gunplay comes off as generic and aside from the few things that you can use in the background such as road signs to split your shots to hit multiple targets there really isn't anything else of note. There are driving sections which sometimes go on for way too long. Stealth sections which are just bland and boring adding nothing else to the repetitiveness. Now don't get me wrong I don't mind repetitiveness but jesus most of the time gunplay feels unsatisfying no matter what weapon you use, handgun, revolver, smg none of them feel good to use. The story only hits a high note at a single point in the game which I won't spoil here. But that's it. After that its a typical revenge story with characters who have zero presence until it is time to fight them in a boss battle. Dialogue is predictable, and the soundtrack is forgettable. There are multiple endings but god if you think I'm going play that last section again you're mistaken. I got this when it was on sale but even there I feel cheated. You're better off spending your money somewhere else.
Well this is an amazing gem of a game. The pixel-art looks gorgeous, the gameplay is fast and fun (and tough as nails once you get to the fifth level). The story pays homage to italian b-movies of the 70's and it can be just as cheesy, but it deals with serious stuff in a confident and often original way. I especially liked the prison level, which manages to tell a compelling story through the mechanics of the game. It's not without faults: sometimes the gameplay is a little trial and error, and the driving sequences are not as polished as they could be. But I'm having a lot of fun and I'm really enjoying the ride. Definitely recommend. 8/10
GOOD

art style
level design
boss fights

BAD

vehicle sequences

COULD BE IMPROVED

available weapons
crouch and sneak mechanic
environment interaction
Milanoir is a fun and fast pace shooting game. The story is simple and linear, recalling italian crime b-movies of the '70s. You play as the bad guy Piero, a ruthless hired gun who gets framed after an assasination and seeks revenge after he's set free with the help of his boss, finding that a lot has changed during his time in jail. Where the game shines most is during the boss fights, there are a total of 7 (one per main level) and all are quite different from each other, considering the few mechanics the game has. You'll die a lot, the game is a bit unforgiving but it doesn't get frustrating. Speaking of mechanics: you have one gun, a pistol that gets later upgraded to an SMG, you can crouch behind cover or roll to dodge incoming bullets (spamming the spacebar makes you almost invincible) and you can throw molotovs or granades you find on the ground but there are very few of them, thats it. One neat feature are the streetsign trickshots, there are different kinds of signs and shooting them deflects the bullet insta-killing one or more enemies around it. I found the controls pretty straightforward and had no problems playing with keyboard and mouse. The levels are greatly designed and detailed: the vehicles, the billboards and posters, the landmarks are as close as pixel art can get to their real life counter parts. What I'm hoping to see in a future update is the ability to choose what weapon to use and having a bit more variety (add a knife and a shotgun maybe?). I'd love to be able to inteact a bit more with the environment, talking to npcs, breaking objects, something different from the mindless shooting. Overall a pretty fun game with some replay value in the arena and multiplayer mode.
Yes this game has pleasant graphics and 70's style stuff, but it also has MEGA awful combat mechanics and horribly - horrible controls system!, which is why i can't recommend this sadistic game to any normal person unless he has some masochistic habits. Watch youtube walkthrough or streaming..... look but don't touch!
Milanoir to przyjemna gra indie w pixel art-owej grafice. Fabularnie produkcja zabiera nas w podróż do Mediolanu lat 70. XX wieku. Zdecydowanie polecam.
Disclaimer: I was so annoyed by the controls I never really made it into the game but this impression is still enough to not recommend. Milanoir is basically a pixel-graphics shooter and looked intriguing. I saw the bad reviews but gave this one a shot because of the graphics. But the controls are so not fun it made me stop hardly 30 minutes in. It feels like movement is too slow and aiming is strange. You move the mouse to change the reticle in relation to your avatar. When you then move the avatar the reticle also moves by the same vector across the screen. This makes mouse controls feel like working against a force - probably because the more common control scheme has you just position the reticle relative to the screen. + Came for the graphics - Left for the controls If I ever come back to this game I may change my recommendation but for now this experience was off-putting enough I will just head on to the next thing. At the moment, I recommend playing something that is not Milanoir.
This game takes you back in more ways than one Back when games didn't have insane mechanics, millions of guns and nonsensical stories. No, not the 70s depicted in this game, just a simpler time. I'd say this little game is a real diamond in the rough. It's got it all, a simple, intentionally-cliche-filled story, simple but satisfying mechanics, sweet music and awesome pixel art. It's great in all aspects. Sure, some bosses are really difficult and driving mechanics are really clumsy, it could use more guns, but for what it is, especially for it's price, it's well worth a pick up.
I have to echo the sentiments about the gameplay being bad. You'll get shot if crouched behind cover but not close enough and due to the almost top-down, grid based nature it's difficult to tell if you can be shot around pillars and such. There's also a really questionable stealth segment which I think they realised sucked because it only lasts 2 screens.
Broken on so many levels. The prison episode is unbeatable unless you use a macro that presses Space 100 times a second. Then there's helicopter boss that kills you with chip damage and mostly random. Then there's lackluster ending. Sorry for the time I spent on this game.
