Way too chaotic to be enjoyed. Can't tell what's going on on the screen.
I have had some people recommending me Critters for Sale. I noticed Rym 9000 was from the same developer and I had it from a previous Humble Bundle (Turkiye-Syria Earthquake Relief). Good cause and I applause Sonoshee for that. And it claims to be inspired by Akira and NEON GENESIS EVANGELION (if you are reading this in the future I hope my future profile photo is still something NGE related). I deemed that it could have been an insta hidden gem but not really... The game starts with the worst possible resolution selected. Classic. Steam overlay is bugged. 20 FPS and below for no apparent reason (so much for high octane). And while I have developed a certain type of immunity against epileptic games (Super Hexagon, PUSS etc) this game ain't a feast for the eyes. Your eyes are in a feast most likely, waiting to be eaten by this atrocious monster of a game. How far can you criticize a game that aims to bleed your eyes and ears through stimulation though? Real shame that it doesn't work properly cuz I can easily see the uniqueness, it is actually charismatic on its own merits. Edit: Tinkered a bit and going window mode fixes both the FPS issue and steam overlay glitches. It's not a biggie to play a Shoot'em up in windowed mode however, I think fullscreen issues should have been fixed by now. And well it's fun-ish but I don't think it's a good experience. I saw a run takes roughly 30 minutes and after 5 minutes I get dizzy already. It's just 'too much' to look at. %99 of the time you won't know what the actual ♥♥♥♥ is going on.
I was excited about playing this game at first. Right after I heard the music and saw the interesting art style I was sold. Unfortunately, the steam overlay is bugged and leaves trails on the screen that won't disappear. If you shift tab even once your entire Steam overlay is stuck on the game screen which makes it impossible to play. 5 years ago the developer said they experienced this same problem, and they would "look into it but doubt to find a fix"... It looks like they didn't find a fix. Unplayable. Not recommended.

𝕎𝕒𝕟𝕟𝕒 𝕙𝕒𝕧𝕖 𝕖𝕡𝕚𝕝𝕖𝕡𝕥𝕚𝕔 𝕥𝕣𝕚𝕡𝕤 𝕖𝕧𝕖𝕟 𝕥𝕙𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙 𝕪𝕠𝕦 𝕕𝕠𝕟'𝕥 𝕤𝕦𝕗𝕗𝕖𝕣 𝕗𝕣𝕠𝕞 𝕖𝕡𝕚𝕝𝕖𝕡𝕤𝕪? 𝕊𝕥𝕖𝕡 𝕣𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥 𝕚𝕟
Well, hello there... Literally what the title of this review is. Rym 9000 is an Arcade Shooter that hasn't learned much from the really old but successful ones at all. It's really in the end, nothing but an attempt to give you Epilepsy because of how flash the lights are... I know, I know that's not how it works, but still, a couple of sessions playing this game and my head would be turning and I'd feel like I'm about to vomit. The thing is straight forward, shoot at the floating... popcorns, until you get to a boss, and shoot some more! You get power ups that, unlike the ones in Pop'n Bee (which is one of the best Arcade shooters ever), these are quite ridiculous... with some even putting you at a disadvantage. All in all, Rym 9000 is horrible and if you want to finish it, like me, I'd recommend only playing it a run at a time. This barf-inducing game gets a 1/10 , especially since there are no options, no resolution change, and you're mostly going to be stuck looking at less-of-a-quarter of your 4k monitor trying to play it lol
very stylish
1/10 tiny screen with almost no room to move in sluggish speed into hidden game abyss with you
A game conceived as a one of its kind sensory experience. The intro alone is already stunningly stylish, and I just run the game from time to time only to see it again. The gameplay itself is a basic schmup composed of 5 stages that deliberately avoids any frills, though there is a good variety of enemies, bosses and patterns to learn which keep the loop engaging and satisfying. This, however, is almost beside the point. Rym 9000 is a game that wants to be experienced foremost, and the shooty part seems just a way to keep the player in a state of maximum alertness, while pouring the gritty and frenetic, flashing visuals and pulsating music onto them. Both of which resemble nothing else really, and make for a trippy ambience focusing on the sensation of speed, flow and strangeness. The latter is compounded by unlocking log entries evoking an over-the-top story full of absurd clans, characters and cosmic entities inspired by sci-fi anime/manga. In this game the style is the substance, and is creative and unique enough to make this a viable proposition.
