It's a controller game. Keyboard and mouse is an option only in name. The control scheme is awkward, the camera controls dreadful and the movement system clumsy beyond belief. The "sprint after landing" window is incredibly long. Also the window fails to actually capture the mouse (no matter the window setting), so I kept going over to my second monitor. The game continuously yells at you "HEY THIS IS A VIDEOGAME BTW", so there is absolutely no danger of any immersion. Few of the mechanics have any world/lore tie in, you collect points and "purchase" abilities. You get elf arrows from sucking off orcs and randomly in the environment. The story setup is also weak, mostly due to how straightforward it is. It's such a cookie cutter setup. The elf you are soul bound to also gets no real introduction? He's just there, no "hello", no "who are you", nothing. The entire sequence feels like "ah damn we have to make a plot hook and tutorial, well whatever, just cobble something together". I will say the sneak tutorial being to kiss your wife is creative. My introduction to the game proper was comical. A random troll immediately killed two captains which of course locks you into this wonderful sequence of "zoom into random orc, get pushed through a series of menus". Again, it's just all so clumsy. The combat system sure is there and it sure is clumsy. It's also so mindless. It's the classic "enemies take turns attacking you". You also get callouts for every incoming attack, making the whole thing feel like a quick time event. Every mechanic i encountered so far has been incredibly dumbed down and made ridiculously easy. The stealth is silly and the time windows for blocking are about twice or thrice as long as they IMO should be. One thing that did stand out to me, was how alive the world felt. There were always orcs running around, getting into fights or chasing after slaves. I'm aware this is an old game and I am judging it harshly with modern day eyes, but witcher 3 came out a year after this and the comparison is night and day.
A wonderful game! I liked it very much and it deserves all the praise it receives. It has aged like fine wine, wasn't boring for a minute, still looks and feels great. The Nemesis system is awesome, fun and interesting and I would love to see it in other games except Shadow of War. Story wasn't something exceptional, but game play is really fun! Combat felt like Batman: Arkham series, but for grownups. I have even considered and started chasing all achievements, and I almost never do this! However, a few made me rethink.

Shadow!!!
Only get this game on sale! The combat and the Nemesis system carry this entire game, and honestly, they do a great job of it. But if you're looking for a deep story, memorable NPCs, or an immersive soundtrack, you're going to be disappointed. That’s why I only recommend buying it on sale (definitely grab the Shadow Bundle). It’s a relatively short game, I managed 100% achievements in 29 hours. To be fair, I did download a save file for one specific achievement ("The Hunt is My Mistress") cause i don't want to waste time grinding for the perfect run.
Was really enjoying this game. Been a huge fan of LOTR for many years and kept forgetting this existed, bought it in the summer sale and was really enjoying it... Unfortunately my save keeps reverting to 18%. I spent probably 7 hours playing the other day to find all of that was erased and every attempt to fix it has gone to ♥♥♥♥. Wish I could recommend.
