I think at this point the entire world knows just how utterly terrible this game is. The graphics are incredibly poor quality and primitive even for 2007 when the 'Two Worlds' was first released, The voice acting is amaturish at best, the story is pretty cliche, and there are a lot of bugs/glitches and problems that just result from poor game design. HOWEVER, I have been playing 'Two Worlds' since I was 13 years old, and I personally believe it's in the "so bad, it's good" category of media. I'm not the only one who thinks this either, as it seems to have a cult following/fanbase online as well. Maybe I'm blinded by nostalgia, but I love showing off this game to my friends.
Look, in terms of whether or not I'd recommend this game, I would not call it a hard no per-say, but it is definitely not an unequivocal yes. It's been said before, but if Steam had a neutral option I'd probably pick it for this one because for all the great aspects that shone during my time with this game, there was an equal amount of significant blemishes that dampened the experience, ultimately leading to me to not want to finish the game but paradoxically still feeling satisfied with the 20 or so hours of gameplay I easily managed to get out of it.
📖The Story
The premise that plops you into this world has you playing as a simple mercenary who needs to save his sister Kira by completing the strict demands of her kidnappers. They turn out to be a mysterious organization that wants you to retrieve a powerful ancient relic and use it to complete a strange dark ritual. The catch is that this relic is broken into separate parts spread out across the map and you need to travel the land to find them all. It's basically a typical fetch quest narrative that gives the player a reason to explore all four corners of the open world map, picking up many side quests and dungeon delving activities along the way. This is where the first, and in my opinion biggest, issue with the game rears its ugly head; it's quest system is the worst I've ever experienced. The reason the questing is so terrible is because the entire design structure is completely backwards and broken. You can accept a completely standard side quest only to realize it is entirely impossible to finish because the game secretly demands that you complete a completely different, totally unrelated side quest first, many of which you won't even have picked up or started yet. For instance you can get a contract to track down and kill a specific rogue named Scar in a local village but when you arrive he simply doesn't exist anywhere in the world because the engine requires you to first do a completely random mining chore for a miner named Finch on a totally different part of the map just to trigger his spawn. Absolutely nothing in your quest log tells you that these independent missions are locked behind one another and there are zero hints provided by the game. You are just left completely stranded trying to guess why a target location is completely empty or why an NPC won't spawn. It forces you into this insanely frustrating cycle where you dread working on your side objectives because you know you will inevitably have to break your immersion to pull out your phone and look up community wiki guides just to figure out what random, missable chore you skipped across the map.
🎮The Gameplay
Thankfully, the gameplay itself is actually incredibly fun. The combat is dynamic and requires you to actually time your movements because you press the q key to jump out of the way in a timed manner to avoid incoming attacks. There are loads of items to find and you have to combine matching weapons and shields together to make them stronger. The depth shines because weapons have completely different damage types that work better on different types of enemies. Some creatures are totally immune to certain elements but none of them are immune to spirit damage, forcing the player to constantly adapt to new threats. The game is not afraid to lack limits either since you can enchant and upgrade items an unlimited amount of times which means magic gets broken very easily. You also have plenty of ingredients to craft potions and I love that every single mixture works because no two ingredients can ever be rejected or fail to combine. Potions give you a massive advantage so you should never neglect them since they can make you completely immune to poison or give you massive damage boosts while some special potions are even permanent upgrades. The constant flow of continually upgrading equipment and fighting foes works because these game mechanics are so well implemented. The magic system and the awesome spell crafting deserve a massive mention too because they are easily some of the coolest elements of the progression. Instead of just learning standard pre-made spells you get to collect custom magic cards that represent different schools of magic like fire water air and earth. You can stack identical cards to make the spell significantly more powerful or combine completely different attribute modifiers to craft crazy custom spells that suit your specific needs. Want to fire a projectile that also summons a minion or trigger a massive area of effect spell that also heals you on the fly you can completely build it yourself. Because the developers did not put a hard cap on how far you can stack and experiment with these elements the magic system allows you to build completely broken and unhinged combinations that feel incredibly rewarding to unleash.
🌍The World
To survive you have to make smart use of the local teleport system to get around and you should never forget to use your portable teleport stone to instantly go back to a town to sell your heavy loot. While exploring you always need to keep an eye out for health and magic shrines which are called altars because they will refresh your health and mana completely free an unlimited number of times. The setting itself can feel a little dull and generic but the monsters are a major standout and look incredibly cool. That visual design ties straight into the graphics which arent terrible or good they are just kind of meh overall. The actual landscape loading distance heavily reminds me of Oblivion with how the terrain and grass pop into view which is highly ironic considering this game was originally touted as the absolute Oblivion killer. Still the world map itself is fantastic and easily shows you exactly where to go since it clearly hits the nail on the head as a basic medieval fantasy setting. When talking to people the dialogue choice glows green if they have a quest to give you which helps since the robotic voice acting is honestly awful and hilariously wooden. Performance wise the game runs fine on modern PCs but it absolutely needs the community four gigabyte patch to run at all or it will crash constantly and it still has an issue with intense stuttering when too many enemies fill the screen at once.
🤔Final Thoughts
Ultimately it is a mixed bag of a title that perfectly balances high entertainment with deep frustration. If you can stomach a completely bland world a generic story and an absolutely abysmal questing system you are left with exceptionally fun gameplay mechanics and great monster designs. It is a highly entertaining progression sandbox for those willing to tolerate a broken campaign structure but the structural bugs will absolutely kill your motivation to cross the finish line.
10/10 the Oblivion Killer.
Elden rings worst nightmare
THIS GAME IS PEAAAK!!!!!!!!!!!!! ♥♥♥♥ PROJARED!
I've played this game though several different times across different machines and four operating systems, XP, 7, 10 and now Windows 11. What I don't like: the game is very buggy; it will randomly crash, so if you decide to play this game save often. The voice acting is good, but the dialog is cringy. Some of the quests are confusing and hard to solve without Internet help. The character is weak starting out and just about anything on the lower levels will kill him in a few hits. The gameplay can be repetitive. Horse riding is terrible and hard to control. The cutscenes are not the same visual quality as the gameplay. What I do like: the gameplay visuals are very good. It runs well on older systems, not so much on Windows 11, which makes a buggy game even buggier. The game provides lots of teleporters so that makes getting around much easier. There is a lot of loot in this game. The game is relatively inexpensive and provides a lot of content. The game has a wide range of combat skills, magic, mele, potion crafting, etc. You can do several different types of builds to suit your tastes: mele, bow, mage. Lots of useful items to support each build. One mechanic I particularly like is that you can combine two items of the same type into an improved, stronger item. I wish more games did this. It allows the character to upgrade items to keep them useful longer. When playing this game I would recommend putting a lot of points in to lockpicking. There are a ton of locked chests in the game with lots of good stuff in them. Also there are bonus codes that give you high damage items early on in the game, Overall, it is a decent dungeon crawler, with lots of loot. Runs great on older hardware, great loot and item upgrade system and the game is still very inexpensive. Reviews have blasted it in the past, but overall worth a look if you like hack and loot games.
