Megamagic: Wizards of the Neon Age - одна из тех игр, которая была действительно недооценена аудиторией.
I hate doing this. I hate finding a game with a unique look and feel, one with a concept I can really get into, and discovering that’s all it has going for it. I’m a child of the 80s and I’ve finally come around to loving its idiotic excesses of synth and hairspray, and Megamagic offers a bizarre fantasy world built upon just that. But it really is built upon just that, with no substance to keep it afloat in a sea of deeper, richer RPG offerings. I wanted to like this one so much, and I did until I literally ran out of things to care about in it. Phoban is your average be-goggled orphan protagonist, raised by his uncle after his father made a demonstrably poor deal with demonic forces. Phoban and his brother are studying to be wizards at the local Order temple, a task made easier by his mysterious staff and blue puff creature left to him by his departed dad. Something’s up with said puff, though, and when the head of the Order demands Phoban turn his buddy over the two flee, sowing all kinds of chaos with marauding zombies and punks and enchanted wildlife. If he’s going to get out of this mess, he’ll need to unravel the mystery of his ephemeral companion and the deeds of his father so long ago. The setting is what’s so special about Megamagic, a sort of high-functioning Fallout wasteland thriving in the wake of a comet that smashed neon magic into the Earth we once knew. Your adventure starts in perfectly normal suburbs, ringed with electro-magical barriers to keep the undead out. From there you’ll journey to forests of sentient plant life, ruined temples to unknown deities, and deserts populated by the nicest Mad Max extras you could hope to meet. It’s all faithfully 80s as ♥♥♥♥, from the delicious synth soundtrack down to the denim jackets and neon trim on all the characters. Most of your time will be spent wandering this colorful world at a brisk pace, talking to folks who are both snappy and unusually aware of the video game mechanics surrounding them. Cleverness aside, the writing is pretty good when you can find folks to have real conversations with, but that only happens when following the main plot. The rest of the time you’ll be fighting things using your two kinds of spells. Your active spells are a set of 4 selected from 20 you unlock and craft over the course of the game, everything from bolts of neon energy to mystical mud puddles. You also summon grims, monsters magically tamed to serve you Pokemon-style to even the odds in fights and serve as puzzle tools when faced with pressure plates or locked doors. Combat is functional, but your own spells are remarkably weak which leaves you supporting your grims with shields and status effects most of the time. There’s no way to level up your spells either, so for power boosts you just have to wait to find the next unlock. There’s no gear, either, or consumables or collectibles to find. You’ll find chests to blast open but they just have crafting materials for your spells. No rewards means no side quests or exploring to do, so all you really need is to follow the quest markers to the next cutscene or battle. You can’t even talk to most of the NPCs, and the ones that do speak just give boring tips about managing your grims. I hate to say it, but in the end Megamagic is all style and no substance. I kept waiting for something new to do, something new to find or work towards, but it’s just you and your quest. No amount of kitschy writing or throwback art can make up for boring battles and aimless wandering, despite how much I appreciated them. I enjoyed Megamagic when I first sat down with it but that enjoyment bled away fast as the lack of depth became apparent. Eventually I reached a point where I was avoiding starting it up again for this review, and now that it’s written I have literally no reason to ever revisit it. Did you enjoy this review? I certainly hope so, and I certainly hope you'll check out more of them at https://goldplatedgames.com/ or on my curation page!
I feel a little bad giving this a thumbs-down, because it seems like a lot of heart went into this. The style is intriguing, and people clearly spent a lot of time developing the characters and story (which manifests itself through way, WAY too much dialogue). But the game is bad. The controls are awful (and can't be re-bound), there's no controller support for the main character, the skills are arbitrary and mostly useless, the summoned pets are both absolutely vital and a complete chore to control, the combat is a chaotic and often unfair mess. Overall the play reminds me of the totally forgettable "Homey D Clown" game released in 1993, or the worst parts of Twinsen's Adventure (aka Relentless, aka Little Big Adventure) from 1994.

Yet another example of why Steam reviews system doesn't really work. Megamagic: Wizards of the Neon Age is one of those games that can't be rated by simple “yes / no”. I mean, just by looking at all those negative reviews, you may think that it's pretty bad. But the thing is... it actually isn't. It isn't bad at all. Well, aside from a few minor bugs here and there, lack of balance and the fact that controller support is a lie. But is it actually good? Well... I don't think so. See, Megamagic is one of those indie titles that you can skip without missing much. Just because there's nothing really special about them. It's an action game (yes, I know that it looks more like an old school RPG, but still, it's a pretty generic action), where you can attack your enemies with spells, or summon some creatures (called “grims”) to support you. That's pretty much it. You follow the mission pointer (almost no optional goals here, aside from some optional challenges), you kill everything, you solve some basic (really, really basic) puzzles. Repeat until credits will roll. “Leveling up” is kind of fun, since you'll need to collect some parts from the enemies and also learn their behavior to unlock the new summons, but all that is way too straightforward (you kill enemies for parts, you avoid their attacks to learn about them) to be called a thing. No, seriously, even though it sounds like a fun thing, it's hardly even worth mentioning, since most of the time it'll just happen without any effort on your side. And aside from that, it's a pretty generic 2D action game, where you either shoot, or dodge. The story is also way too generic (it's just yet another “evil priest” thing with some stupid humor mixed in), while the entire nostalgia thing is... Well, to be honest, I don't know why it's even here. I mean, sure, 80s / 90s can sell stuff. Add LukHash-like soundtrack, SNES sprites on background and neon lights, and people will pay. The problem is – in this game... it doesn't really feel like there was a need for all that. Neither writing, nor gameplay actually call for such things. As the result, it really does feel like the retro motif was added just for money, to make it easier to fund the game on KickStarter (yes, it's a KickStarter game, no, it isn't as bad as some other KickStarter projects). So, despite all those negative reviews, Megamagic: Wizards of the Neon Age is totally playable. If you'll get it cheap during the sale, or as a part of a bundle on one of those “get a lot of games cheap” websites... I don't think a single playthrough will make you feel bad. It's just, like I've said, it's a pretty generic indie game that fails to provide enough motivation for you to actually care about it. There's so many generic indie games in Steam at this point that it's all about you and what you come across. You come across this exact title – you may as well finish it without feeling bad about wasting your time (it's not that long anyway). You come across any other game of this kind... it won't even matter. Even though Megamagic tries to be different here and there, it isn't nearly enough to make a real difference.
When I first started this game I felt that Saturday morning cartoon magic like when I was a kid, but there was a difficulty spike that I could not get past and it unfortunately killed the game for me.
It's a shame when a game comes out that's 100% your aesthetic but does everything wrong. First off, you can't customize your controls. Yeah, that may or may not be a dealbreaker from some but it's just the tip of the iceburg when you get deeper into the game. You start off with a few spells and quickly realize how underpowered you are after the first two or three real fights. You might start thinking "Okay, so I'll get stronger after I level up or get some more spells, right?" Joke's on you. The game gets significantly harder with artificial difficulty and you get stuck running from overpowered and overly aggresive enemies that could really use some hit stun at the very least. All the while, the real enemy is the controls. If you somehow manage to soldier on, you get treated to a very specific stretch of battles that completely test your nerves and sanity. These fights would probably be easier if you could remap your keys... but nope, you got to play the way the developers wanted. Or until they honor their "promise" of adding customization. But it's been over a year. I used to check every once in a while to see if they delivered. Going on over a year, it's pretty obvious this game has all been abandoned. Lesson learned, Beutifun will never get another dollar from me.
