I'm a big fan of the Battletech setting and finally got around to *trying* to play through MW5 Clans. Emphasis on trying because despite opting for "Story Mode" difficulty cause I'm more interested in the story than trying to challenge myself, the game is still absolutely brutal as you get near the end of the main campaign. In their desire to mimic the attrition like combat of Battletech, they seem to have overlooked the fact that attrition and super lengthy missions where you battle entire regiments of battle mechs means you can waste half an hour of your life limping into a final fight you have zero chance of fighting through. And just like MW5: Mercenaries, the game is so hard balanced to favor tonnage over anything else (in Battletech light and medium mechs very much have purpose and use) that you will end up spending the final stretch of the campaign fielding nothing but 100 tonners to even have a chance to pass the mission, which sucks because the game only gives you three of them- assuming you've bought the DLC to get the Bane and Kodiak as options at all. I think they shouldn't have focused so much on unsatisfying mechanics of XP spending for chassis and pilots, and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ research system is a chore that if you forget it for a whole planet arc like I did, leaves you horribly prepared to continue on because unlike the XP spending mechanics of other areas you have to consistently manage the research screen to get that extra couple percent onto barely relevant mech statistics. The story seems great, I would love to finish it but I'm tired of torturing myself on Luthien to finish it. I'll try the DLC campaigns since I already bought them and see if those are improvements, but considering they never learned the lesson of boosting non-assault mechs from the years of it being a problem in MW5:Mercs I have low hopes. Do not bother buying this game, just watch someone else's playthrough

I was not sure about this edition of MechWarrior, but so far I like it better that Mercenaries. I like weapons can be upgraded instead of having to chase them accross galaxies. The Mech customization is much better, as you have different type of configurations for complete mechs or section of them. Combat is more interesting as tanks are not as easy to kill as in Mercenaries I think the story line is much better too... Overall i recommend this game, and if you're a Mechwarrior fan, this is a must play! Hope we get much more DLCs in future :)
i have been waiting 20 years for this game. Don't get me wrong Mechwarrior 5 mercs is not a bad game but the story was always weak and the travel time and money to damage ratio makes me feel like I am working a charity. Mechwarrior 5 Clans gives me the Story and a much better balanced management system for my research, money and mechs. The story in this game is the Chefs Kiss. I highly recommend this game to any true Battletech fans or if you just played the original Mechwarrior games. Shoot, if you played the Earthsiege series and want a mech game this is your game! The music and graphics are excellent you can watch the trailers for that much. Its the Campaign that makes this game worth it. And I love the DLCs continue this heavy narrative driven story. Also they are now putting that kind of story telling into Mechwarrior 5 Mercs which is enough to get me back in Mech 5 mercs.
I love giant mech games, and I wish I could just own and play the DLCs, which are supposedly really good; however, my god... the base game is so bad that I refunded it. The voice acting is... atrocious. The characters are mostly annoying. The mechlab is even a downgrade from mercenaries, which, without mods, was garbage. Progression in the game is just bigger and bigger mechs, and the AI is just... not good. It is pretty, though.
I came into this game to drive a mech into battle, not manage and finance a small team that walk in front of my shots 60% of the time. between the shaders cache rebuilding and the cut scenes deciding to not load chunks of people, this has fallout level graphic bugs with none of the humor. You'll spend a fourth of the game in loading scenes, another fourth in poor voiceovers, another fourth managing your crew and equipment, and then maybe another fourth actually playing the game. If you want a mech fighting game go play mercenaries instead.
Normal difficulty on this game feels like advanced level compared to MW5: Mercenaries. I'm on the 4th mission with zero weapons left just watching dropship after dropship of enemy mechs fall and have nothing to do about it. I have over 500hrs in Mercenaries, this is a very different game.
You can feel that its old people making the cutscenes, but there's a certain charm to it. Gameplay and mech customification is top notch. Co-op got the most fun out of it for me.
Leaving a bad review until they fix the torso to leg indicator, the way it's currently set up is game breaking for me. I've tried getting past it but it is just so illogical that I cant put it behind me its its mind-boggling that they wouldn't offer a toggle in the settings to revert it to how it was in basically all of their previous games.
