Once you realize this is a rougelike with extraction elements, it all clicks
this game ROCKS please make a Mac verison NOWW
Marathon is the peak of extraction shooters: it captures the high-stakes thrill of the genre without relying on the borderline-abusive, cyclical grind of its competitors (ARC Raiders is something else entirely). It epitomises the philosophy of "easy to learn, hard to master"; and replaces suffocating, fun-killing "gear fear" with a balanced gameplay-first loop in which losing gear feels like a fair wager rather than a terrible setback. If you want an intense, PvP-first shooter that delivers the emotional highs of Escape from Tarkov while not needing to hoard the best gear to stand a chance in a lobby, Marathon is your game! Marathon successfully delivers an intense feeling that few games truly do: the feeling of simultaneously being hunter and prey. It succeeds where most others fail by creating a beautiful system in which this dynamic plays out. In Marathon, when you feel like prey, it isnt simply due to having lesser gear or bad luck. It is a direct result of your choices, be it putting yourself in a bad spot, making a bad decision in a gunfight, or approaching a situation in a sub-optimal way that might even force you to fall back and reassess. On the other hand, when you feel like the hunter, it is a high that is earned through not only mechanical skill, but mastery of the game systems (such as shell abilities, implants, util, etc), situational awareness, sharp intuition, and flawless execution. What really makes Marathon shine among not only extraction shooters, but live-service games, is its rejection of the abusive, FOMO-driven cycles that are far too common in contemporary video games. To be completely fair, the game isnt without its frustrating moments. If you spend much time in end-game areas like the Cryo Archive, you have definitely run into trios sporting kitted Misriah shotguns that have a seemingly endless supply of bubble shields. Its incredibly unbalanced and a brutal combination, but even this doesnt guarantee a loss; playing smart - using util and shell abilities to draw them out of their bubbles and put the fight back into your hands - still allows you to break these teams apart and claim their gear as your own. Because the game constantly and generously rewards you with easy (and even free!) gear, losses - both fair and unfair - are heavily mitigated. Gear in this game is a wager: the better the gear, the higher the stakes. But even losing a piece of Prestige equipment is never devastating. This philosophy of gear raising the stakes of individual runs, while the game continuously feeds you resources, greatly incentivises creative buildcrafting and aggressive playstyles. Apart from the mechanical profundity and the joy that comes from skill expression, this game is visually beautiful. Although very striking, the visual design and art direction are easy to read in the heat of combat. Every weapon, valuable, consumable, piece of utility, etc. has a distinct and interesting design that lets you quickly identify what it is and whether or not you want it. The design of the world not only serves its purpose in facilitating gameplay, it completely immerses you in the setting. The clean, corporate bright colours of the colony - mankinds greatest achievement - overtaken with death, disease, the paranormal, and the inevitable crawl of time. When you teleport into the map in your shiny new shell, with your shiny new guns, and descend into a derelict facility overtaken by an anomalous swamp on an alien world, you feel like a high-tech graverobber picking at the skeleton of a giant. Genuinely could not recommend more.
While the extraction shooter genre is known for being difficult to play and the skill ceiling being very high, Marathon's variety in not only shells to choose from that give you cool and empowering abilities and contracts that let you focus on objectives you feel comfortable in accomplishing, and because the success of these objectives often is not tied into your ability to extract successfully, you won't feel so bad when your run ends unexpectedly if you were able to accomplish your contract before elimination. It's worth playing. The lore is cool and the gameplay is fun. Those that love high risk high reward stuff will thrive and those who wanna study lore and mysteries can find much to investigate.
honestly not an extraction shooters girlie generally but the gameplay loop to this is actually very fun, the gunplay is tight and the audio design is magnificent. the art direction has kept most of my attention admittedly but im shocked how much this game creeps into my head when im not playing it. if you so-so on extraction shooters or even negative towards them but are curious to find one that could show you the appeal id say give this one a shot
Love this game.
If you liked to get rammed into a wall(by AI, Clunky bullies with anger issues, teammates, and other assortments of horror), then this FPS is for you. Come join the sweatiest, most sleep depraved, caffeine dependent, trash game loving people you'll ever have the pleasure to kill or die to. You will want to gouge your eyes out at the sheer beauty of the bugs alone but don't fret, its loads of fun
Marathon is ridiculously fun. Every run feels intense and unpredictable, and I constantly find myself wanting to jump back in. The world is weird, mysterious, and completely pulls you in. The marketing trailers are also absolutely fire!
Marathon is one of those games that really gets you. There's no better feeling than going zero to hero in a single game. The art style is unique and simple enough to identify an enemy player throughout the arena. Something very good for someone as blind as myself. The movement, gunplay, and abilities run and feel very good. The weapons are unique and have various attachments to perform in different ways. The proximity chat provides for some of the funniest moments in gaming I've had in a while. Though this game isn't for everyone, it sure is for me :)
