I do not get why this game is considered the weakest Mafia game. It has a great story and a great open world. Yes, some of the side content is repetitive, but the same could be said for many open world games. The soundtrack is fantastic and just driving around New Bordeaux is great. The characters are really good too. I consider this an underrated gem.
Amazing gunplay and story. aslong as your able to ignore the repetitive nature or enjoy it its amazing. also an amazing revenge story and overall the best mafia game in the series (asleast in my opinion) and i did use mods.
good game, awesome soundtrack
I finally decided to try out this game on a whim and I was expecting it to be bad given it's infamy, so I just downloaded a pirated copy through torrent. But this is game is genuinely so f*cking good and fun that I just had to come here and BUY it. STOP listening to youtubers and the hive mind that they generate and try out games for yourself. Remember that bad reviews always generate more engagement and that's the real reason you see so much negativity around gaming online. The only reason this "Mixed" rating is here is because a certain group of people who are unfortunately numerous amongst us gamers, didn't like that during the game the protagonist kills a certain kind of enemy that they identify themselves with. There are some bugs yes, but they're negligible. The story is good, the MC is awesome, the gameplay is peak. Try the game out and see for yourself.
great story
Story is boring and I don't care to finish the game.
Mafia III had all the ingredients to become the definitive Mafia game. A larger open world, a more ambitious story, deeper themes tackling race and organized crime in the late 1960s, and a fresh protagonist all pointed toward something special. Unfortunately, technical issues that remain unresolved nearly a decade after launch, a repetitive gameplay loop, and the removal of several features from the previous games prevent it from reaching its full potential. The story is easily the game's strongest aspect. You play as Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam War veteran who returns home to New Bordeaux in 1968, hoping to settle his affairs before heading west to California. Those plans are cut short when the city's most powerful crime family betrays him and murders the people closest to him, setting Lincoln on a brutal path of revenge. It's a compelling premise, and the narrative remains engaging throughout thanks to its excellent performances, documentary-style presentation, and memorable cast of characters. The problem is everything the game asks you to do between those story missions. Unlike the tightly paced campaigns of Mafia and Mafia II, Mafia III adopts a structure that feels heavily inspired by open-world games like Far Cry. Before advancing the story, you're repeatedly required to weaken criminal rackets by completing the same handful of objectives over and over again. It quickly becomes a cycle of clearing out enemies, destroying property, interrogating informants, and repeating the process in a different district. It feels like content for the sake of content, and it hurts the pacing of what is otherwise a well-written revenge story. Thankfully, the moment-to-moment gameplay remains enjoyable. Gunfights are satisfying, melee combat is brutal, and driving feels responsive enough to make traveling across New Bordeaux enjoyable. None of these mechanics reinvent the wheel, but they're polished enough to carry the experience through its weaker moments. New Bordeaux itself is easily the largest and most ambitious city the series has featured. Its recreation of the American South during the late 1960s is full of personality, and the soundtrack does an incredible job of bringing the era to life. Unfortunately, it's also the most technically unstable world in the trilogy. Mafia III is one of the buggiest games I've ever played. Weather effects frequently malfunction, AI behavior can become erratic, lighting glitches out every in-game morning, and it's not uncommon to see cars spawning halfway into the road, creating traffic jams for no apparent reason. I found myself reloading checkpoints more often than I would have liked just to work around various issues. It's frustrating because many of these bugs were already present when the game launched, and even after all these years, a surprising number remain. And yet, despite all of its flaws, there's still a genuinely great game buried underneath the technical problems and repetitive design. Every now and then, Mafia III reminds you of the ambitious experience it could have been. Its story, setting, soundtrack, and characters are strong enough to carry you through the rough patches, even if they can't completely overcome them. Mafia III isn't a bad game—it's a frustrating one. It's a game full of fantastic ideas that never quite come together as well as they should have. If you're willing to tolerate the bugs and repetitive mission structure, there's still a memorable crime story waiting for you in New Bordeaux. Just be prepared to overlook a lot of rough edges to experience it.
This has been really fun, aside from the bugs and game breaking bugs, could not play "faster baby" dlc in 2026 as an idea, i really enjoyed the game!
Mafia 3 is a game of incredible highs and frustrating lows. The story is easily the best part of the experience. Lincoln Clay is a phenomenal protagonist, and the game's unique, 1960s documentary-style storytelling is gripping from start to finish. Combined with a flawless licensed soundtrack, the atmosphere of New Bordeaux is unmatched. However, the actual gameplay structure kills its momentum. Unlike the linear, narrative-focused style of the first two games, Mafia 3 forces you into a highly repetitive open-world grind. To progress the story, you are stuck repeatedly clearing out the same enemy rackets, interrogating informants, and taking over territories over and over again. The combat and gunplay feel punchy and the stealth mechanics are satisfying, but doing the exact same mission loop for 30 hours grows stale. It is also plagued by weird lighting glitches and sub-par enemy AI. If you can look past the heavy padding and repetitive grind, the narrative makes it worth picking up on a deep sale. Buy it for the story, just prepare for the filler.
I bought this and the other 2 definite editions in a deal. 26 hours in. I have really liked it. It is really really worth, for the massive sale i got on all 3 games. This one in particular is good. You can finally experience a Mafia open world game and I think they did quite the good job. Yes i get it is a bit repetive main story wise, but I don't mind so far because I actually like the story. It does feel like you are taking things over and building your gang. It almost reminds me of Godfather 2, the game but the ultimate and total perfect version of that. Not perfect, but very good. The open world is great. I think the map feels a good size so far and I have a lot to explore. I have done so many open world games I apprecaite a nice sized open world like this that isnt massive and isnt small either. It has a real unique feel to it imo. I like getting collectibles and ♥♥♥♥ in a open world map, and the game gives you plently of that to do. I appreciate that. The combat is honestly, in my opinion... very good. I am honestly impressed. I did not expect that the combat would be this violent or feel this good. I dont know what else to compare it to atm but wow, they did a good job. I like the weapons. I put the game on hard at the start and even then I feel it is a bit easy. I can imagine normal would feel like an absolutely pushover. I have actually died a few times, which i appreciate, but overall the enemies feel a bit slow... its easy to get the first shot on them and the main character is absolutely ruthless. This goes far to say the best thing in this game... and who would imagine this is even possible, but maybe the "best soundtrack in a video game ever," goes to this game. Wow. That's... incredible. The soundtrack may actually be doing some carrying. Nothing more needs to be said, just please go listen yourself and appreciate a true masterpiece of a soundtrack. I will point out negative(s) I have found to try and be a little balanced. It comes from a very surprsinging, "but maybe i expected it cause I kinda know the plot already," sense. I actually do not like all three of the underbosses, or whatever you want to call them and thats maybe the most dissapointing part of all so far. Even Vito from Mafia 2... I don't like him so far in this! Maybe that will change, but they instantly get kinda annoying once they settle in to their new spots and go into dialogue almost immediately about being taking care of with new rackets and territories... it gets to be a bit much. I am going to be fair and objective... they are all bad. I certainly won't mind taking all of them out. I know already from spoilers years back that I kinda remember only one survives? If that is the case, then Vito will of course make it out of loyalty... but its not because he is awesome like Mafia 2, he is just as annoying as the other 2. Again, its really fun. Cannot believe im saying that about this game after all the hate i have heard about it since it came out, in saying that, I am well aware the game had serious issues at launch, and if this title was just by itself full price I might say it wasnt worth the full price, but for the massive discount I picked this up on, and trying to take money out of things entirely, this is a fun, good game.
