Follow our curator page: IndieGems if you like and want to see more reviews like this one.
Lootcraft is quite a fun and unique game. It is a casual action platformer that has many RPG elements, including a fairly extensive crafting system. It also features set 5-floor dungeons with procedural generation of levels. It's no surprise that this game developer had inspirations from many mainstream games already out there, you can see that for yourself just by looking at the individual elements of the game. The developer, Eric Schmitt, was a full-time software engineer who quit his job to pursue his dreams. He has labored away tirelessly at every aspect of the game, including every pixel sprite. The only thing he didn't create himself in this game has been the music, and that was created by a friend of his. Two years of labor later, this game is now for public consumption here on Steam. It's fair in price and has a good amount of content, it has quite a bit of in-depth gaming experience that can appeal to a wide audience. I am speaking from a first-impressions perspective, as I have tried this game in short sittings the past two days. So perhaps my thoughts will change with time, but so far, I am enjoying it very much. Does it feel like it lacks polish when compared to some other games out there? Absolutely. But for a single-developer game to offer so much fun? It rarely happens. My very first look at the game is on YouTube, you can find it here (movement tutorial to start, gameplay starts at 15:00): https://youtu.be/kTtT138hOus
Gameplay
Explore floors leading up to the boss in a 5-floor dungeon, smashing enemies and collecting loot along the way. Get through the boss or die trying and be sent back to the "menu" where you can choose where you want to go next, be it to sell/upgrade your loot and gear, or to work on level-restricted spells/abilities. In the 100 floors divided into the individual dungeons, you will have a lot of replay value and many different types of loot/gear to play with.
Controls
Keyboard and mouse only. The mouse plays a big part in the overall control scheme, in the aiming process of both projectile and melee weapons, so it might be difficult to transition to controller support. The developer has mentioned that he will be working on this to see if it's viable.
Graphics
There are a lot of carefully designed pixel sprites. The base character without equipment looks like a few disconnected round shapes, but once you start donning equipment and gear, it gets a lot more exciting.
Music
The music is pretty fun to listen to as well.
Audience
Mostly fans of RPG games and casual hack&slash type gameplay. It's definitely taken that hack&slash style into a 2D platforming type of level design. The platforming takes a little bit of getting used to, but it is not difficult by any means.
Pricing
The base price is set at $7.99, this is more than reasonable for a game of this scope and the amount of content that is within.
Positives
+Fun and casual hack & slash gameplay +Extensive RPG elements with a huge emphasis on improving equipment through crafting +Unique bosses that offer decent challenges +Limitations within character building that allows for replay value (limited permanent spell/ability slots) +Short dungeons, 5 floors each, to allow for short sittings if you are in a hurry. (This is after you get used to the game.) +Movement tutorial in the beginning that shows you the ropes. (The controls can take a little bit getting used to.) +Self-designed pixel sprites in every aspect of the game by the developer himself. +Pleasant music +There is a story, it's not much in what I have seen so far, but it's there. (It may seem pointless to some people, but there are plenty of players who appreciate even small bits of lore here and there. I am such an individual.)
Negatives
-[strike]There are destructive environments that in certain situations making upward climbing really difficult or seeingly impossible.[/strike] (At the first boss, this was a big deal, now has been fixed.) -The character limitations in the abilities/spells that are permanent seem too restrictive. (This is me speaking personally. I am at level 5 and have the option to pick one of many spells, but I don't dare to in not wanting to pick one that doesn't fit my playing style and thus wasting it.) Suggestion: Give the player some flexibility in exchanging abilities. -[strike]V-sync not currently available[/strike] -Balancing seems to be off in certain aspects of play (developer actively fixes and readjusts based on player-base complaints/comments though, so this is actually a positive note. A solitary developer should allow the player base to help with these fine tuning parts of a game.) -Display problems with what new equipment would alter the stats of the character. -Socketing gems into shields yield weapon instead of armor effects.
Conclusion
Please keep in mind, once again, that I am reviewing after a couple of short sessions, so this is a first-impressions review. I may come back to modify it if I feel my impressions change once I spend more time with it. I think Lootcraft is a fantastic indie gem with a reasonable price, enough content and replay value to command your attention for many hours. It's not perfect, but the developer is willing to work with the players to improve the game based on comments/complaints. I do hope that somehow a smooth configuration for controller support is pushed through, but I am getting used to the keyboard and mouse by now that it doesn't feel like a big hindrance any more. On sale or at the base price, give the game a chance. Try it and you might like it, especially after spending some time with it.
I received the product for free. Lootcraft is an fun RPG/Rogue-lite-ish game, here is a list of pros and cons that I found through my current playthrough of the game to simplify the review.NOTE: I wrote alot below, both so that players can see how this game is well worth the price, but also I noticed its a single developer and i feel the more detailed the negatives, the more helpful it will be to try and fix them. Its a game well worth it's modest price for the amount of effort and game there is here, but weird and bad choices are scattered all over that needlessly hurt the game PROS: + The amount of items and loot, the game truely lives up to the name. + The gameplay is based in different leveled dungeons which give you different level and kinds of loot based on your level and skill to get there. + Art style feels sort like a retro flashgame from the mid 2000's especially the main character who looks like Interactive Buddy a bit (nostalgia hit) + Combat is simple and fun + The stats are easy to read, and easy to see which item is better quickly (very important for loot games) + Movement felt wierd and heavy during the tutorial where there are no enemies and bigger spaces, but you get used to it once you start playing through the actual game. + Actual care and effort went into this game unlike most steam indie games nowadays + Sound design is well mixed in, the music is present but does not overpower the gameplay sounds like alot of other games. CONS: - Quality of life improvements (Other reviews mention this alot aswell). This game needs some serious QOL fixes which includes pressing ESC to pause the game, pressing TAB to open inventory, closing all open windows with a button press, being able to climb to the top of the ladders without having to jump (this currently causes me to air dash alot) - The air jump-dash and ground pound are both horribly mapped out. It feels awkward and bad to ground pound or dash. Instead of pressing SPACE -> W -> Space there should be an option to just press W while in the air, same for just pressing S in the air (or even just a seperate button just for dashing/pounding). - The UI is just way, way to large. Almost comedically large. There should be an option to change the sizes as many times I will accidentaly click the lore or inventory during gameplay. - An option to destroy inventory items during actual gameplay levels would help remove item drop clutter from being accidently re-picked up. - The flying enemies are annoying to fight. I am unsure if I am suppose to jump and hit them in the air (as i am doing now, but takes forever to fight them) or just carry a range weapon just to fight them. Maybe make them fly lower to the player so melee isnt as usless against them? note, this could also just be me being bad against them, idk. - The spells are very unusually made...There are ~30? spells and you can only permanently pick 3 and never change them (unless i read it wrong ingame) and they are all temporary improvements, damages or AOE's. I would rather have permanent skills i could invest into like +5% hp or unlock triple jump then these current spells. I havent even wanted/used any of them yet as I dont want to permanently unlock one and also just dont like them. I would personally completely remove or overhaul this. PS. I saw this game posted on r/Unity3D and decided to check it out (and buy it). So maybe post it more around reddit?
I love RPG games and love the nostalgia of the classic game feel, which this game has. The controls and mechanics are simple enough, yet the game itself is deceptively challenging. It starts off slow but when you get to the second dungeon, I felt like the difficulty curve got much steeper, so it forced me to play more strategically. Graphics are simple yet colorful which I really like. So far so good!
Dungeons, crafting, mining, looting, platforming, min/max-ing procedurally generated gear and weapons all jammed in quite a neet RPG package with a helpful fairy. https://youtu.be/45uy1_JrJ0c
Super fun and engaging! I can't believe this is made by one person... Love the crafting system and collecting gems to make better items. Super addicting and there's so much to do, new things keep unlocking as you level up. Really awesome that it's basically infinitely playable too, you can make new characters to change your strategy - classic RPG fun :) So much content for the price, worth every penny!
Fun game with a diverse array of items, loot, spells/abilities, and enemies. The character progression and ability to upgrade gems which can be further upgraded or used immediately to improve weapons/armor is an interesting mechanic that has me debating whether to save gems for later, upgrade them, or use them immediately on my current equipment. The roguelike dungeons which are separated into different worlds to allow starting play from different points is a concept I haven't seen before, which I liked. You can either go back to previously beaten worlds (5 levels each) to loot, complete quests, and upgrade your character, or continue from the furthest set of levels that you've unlocked. But either way the worlds are procedurally generated each time you begin one and you must play each through from start to finish to complete it (but you can always exit with your gained experience and loot). Some in-game mechanics could do with a hotkey instead of necessitating being mouse-clicked, such as using the number keys for abilities or 'e' to open equipment, etc. But overall after becoming used to the controls I was able to quickly adapt to the game and found myself improving. I'd recommend the game to anyone who likes RPG style progression as the array of items and upgrades is where the game shines best.
Love fast paced action RPG platformer style games? Then stop thinking about it and just give this game a purchase without hesitation.. and thank me later! ...This game oozes both quality and personality and it is simple a joy to play! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVV46CcHb3w The tutorial is hampered by what seems to be a gimmicky double jump back and forth between two walls area, but the key is not try and actually do it right, but to instead just spam your space bar and hit A and D until you glitch your way up. Besides that however, this game is fun as hell to play, to fight the mobs, to discover to items and gear, and mainly just to explore! it feels great to play for sure as well and seems to offer a ton of replay value with the procedural level and loot generation. My only request besides fixing the glitchy double jump area in the tutorial is to add controller support. I feel like this game really "needs" controller support for the majority of people to truly enjoy it. Regardless of the minor faults, this game is a STEAL at only $7.99 USD and could be priced at $15 and still be a good deal. My first impressions score, mostly helped by the strong value is a 95% which makes this only of my Zaxtor's Indie Gold selections! Highly Recommended! 95/100 score.
Lootcraft is an addicting rpg platformer that allows complete customization in a 2 dimensional world. You can balance your stats, choose weapon type, and stack abilities to your choosing. I appreciate the thoughtfulness of the balance between the strength of the different abilities and stats on the armor and weapons. You can make unique combinations when you reach level 25. I've found that it is fun to have a heal and a couple offensive abilities. Sometimes I die when I aggro too many mobs but you can really dodge and weave through the mobs by mastering the intuitive jumping and various weapon styles. You can smoothly flow through the world if you time your jumps well. Lootcraft is a thoughtful and incredibly detailed game that allows the user to create characters that suit their style of fighting. I've loved trying the big two handed weapons as well as the wands and staves. The gems allow you to further customize your character. I love being able to stun and light my enemies on fire. Makes clearing through the endless dungeons even faster! Overall, this game is worth purchasing because of its simple yet beautiful style, intricate game design and loot, and a fun fighting style that I think would be fun on any platform. It was also made by a single developer which I think is admirable and unique.
Just grind. Boring.
