Pretty great, reminds me a lot of the first level of Spore. Which was easily the best level.
Played the demo, hoping for a Spore's cell stage but with more depth. I wasn't hoping for much. 3 hours later I happily plunked down my money to buy this game realizing it's a solid game in it's own right and I was genuinely having fun. It's fun, addictive, and calming. No buttons to push, just bump into things to gain resources or attack other cells. As you gain enough resources to split, you get the opportunity to mutate new upgrades which are just stat increases to things like speed, attack, defense, health, but you can unlock other types that synergize with the type of food you metabolize. Bonus points (from me at least) for leaning into the biological names for upgrades and mechanics. For example: The "Sugar to ATP" describes sugar more efficiently converting to stored energy (if I remember correctly). The developer was also incredibly responsive and is working on adding better gamepad and steamdeck support. Some requests and suggestions since this game just came out 4 days ago and I want this to be something that keeps getting better and gets a ton of attention: - Change the 'swarm' mechanic to part of the upgrade path so it can be optional for each play through. I felt like I was competing with my own swarm for resources more than enemies many times. They follow you around and then grab food from you really quickly. I can see this being advantageous when you need them for protection or hunting, but if I don't need them, they're more nuisance than help and I would rather just choose not to have a swarm. - I've had playthroughs where every lifeform felt like it was competing on one resource and none were around to consume the others. But changing the food you metabolize isn't unlocked in the beginning levels (it was in the demo). So I'd run around passing tons of sugar and then fighting with everyone else (and my own swarm) over every bit of carbs. Kinda annoying and made for a slower game. - Gaining upgrades changes your appearance slightly. If you keep upgrading your attack, maybe spikier membrane? If you go faster, maybe grow a visible flagellum. Increase your defense, and you get a thicker membrane. - More 'powers'! This game inspires the imagination and I immediately wanted to do more cool things! Some ideas: -- Swarm mining: Unlock the ability to have your swarm mine/crack open some of the larger resource spawning large cells by working together. -- Poison trails: need to make a get away from a predator? Choose to leave a chemical trail behind you for a little bit after being attacked or on demand Anyways, this is a fantastic game already and easily worth the price just for the simple fun. Thanks a ton for this one, it definitely looks like a labor of love.
A neat idea and theme, that doesn't stick the landing. You select a stage; this comes with a (large) map, as well as a set of options for your cell's primary food source (sugar, lipids, etc). You pick a form for your cell, which applies various stat modifiers, and you're immediately dropped into the world. You have to run around, avoiding hostiles while pursuing your meal of choice. Eaten food metabolizes over time into stored energy, which in turn converts into healing, as well as charge on a meter to eventually permit your cell to split. Performing a split grants you an upgrade draw, and your clone will promptly run off and try to do the same thing as you. Each stage comes with a small selection of goals to complete, and your objective is to wrap them all up as swiftly as possible. Goals include things like "become X% of all lifeforms on the map" or "render this specific other species extinct". The problem is that that's about it, really. To the point that I'd progressed, every stage's only goal was some flavor of the extinction one, and this became a big problem. Your many AI spawned cells are not particularly aggressive, so tracking down and killing your targets is a chore that falls largely to you. Clear out an area, move on to the next one, and then while you were busy there a small handful slipped back to the first region and have been reproducing. You might have a dozen of your own cells there, but they'll have cheerfully ignored the problem. This goes double if you and your targets don't share a food source; without that extra gravity to bring both sides together, your companions might as well not even exist. Furthermore, there's not really any risk or challenge involved, apart from shooting for best time. If your cell should happen to die, play gets transferred to your nearest spawn. But, what this effectively means is that the only chance you have for "defeat" is in the first 30 seconds of a stage, before you've had a chance to split much. Again, a biological roguelike is a novel idea I haven't seen much of elsewhere. I just wish this one were more compelling.
Pretty fascinating and relaxing simulation. A bit too short for now, I hope dev will continue update with new levels, hazardous obstacles, maybe gamemodes and system that would change your specie apperance slighty with each learned ability or upgrade. I would suggest adding toggleable key to show/hide all interface, like "Screenshot mode". And also evolution skill to give "phaze" ability through lifeforms of your specie for 0,5 sec with 5 sec cd, or something like that would be neat..
Small game with a surprising amount of depth behind it! Really easy to get dragged in and lost in time playing as your own little species (que spore vibes) - need to see this expanded further such as more options in sandbox mode, variety for individual level objectives and different species and more abilities.
I found the controls to be ganky. And my swarm was more annoying than it was helpful. A sufficiently frustrating and unenjoyable experience that I requested a refund for the first time ever.
A fun rogue like spore-cell-stage but simple and fast - mainly focused on bacterial warfare - with a lot of AI allies all using the traits you build into yourself each time you split. Sometimes tedious ( I don't like the extinction missions, but that's a complaint for the dev to fix not a reason not to play the game ). Has decent variety in how to play. From fast scavenger, to hardy herbivour, to nightmare carnivor. Quite well. Worth the cheap price.
Buy Thrive instead, cheaper and so much better. This game is boring and repetitive.
Оригинальная игра на пару вечеров. Простая и медитативная. Есть вопросы к количеству контента: мало уровней и интересных ситуаций, полезности многих апгрейдов. В целом - годнота, определенно достойная внимания.
best cell evolution game EVER!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT <3
