Runner Streams. It's very nice. It reminds me a lot of Games such as Legends of Amberland II, or Legends of Amberland.
I suppose after playing the first two titles and now playing and completing the third, it is about time I reviewed these games, huh? Firstly, if you're like me and love party based RPGs and/or love the old school 90s blobber design and asthetics, you're going to love this game. It hits that same itch for me that Might & Magic III/IV/V did back in the day and honestly, I wish more games today filled that same niche genre. I'm not the type of individual who needs the latest and greatest graphics if the gameplay is there to keep me invested, which Legends of Amberland III does very well. The enhancements over the previous two titles really add a lot to the mix as well, my favorite probably being the item quality and variety for weapons, armor and accessories has really expanded, especially since the first Amberland title. Oh, I also am a sucker for customization, and the game makes it incredibly easy to drop my own custom portraits into the game to use for my custom built party of 7. This needs to be a default for all RPGs of this type, imo, so thank you Amberland for sticking to that trend. If you want to play an all caster party, or an all melee party--you can do that! Want to make a party of nothing but rangers or healers? You can do that too. Honestly, the replayability is pretty close to limitless, in my humble opinion. What more can I really say about the title? You probably already have this wishlisted if you're the type of gamer I am, and if you're on the fence for any reason, I say wait for a sale. I can think of a million worse ways to spend $20 or less. Have you seen the cost of Taco Bell lately? Save yourself the disappointment of a poorly heated burrito and just get this instead. I doubt you'll regret it.
I'm recommending the game, but this is also with the caveat that it is definitely the weakest entry imo, and I'm really hoping things get changed up if the games continue. For the record, I played all games back-to-back, and where the first and second took 10 and 12 hours respectively (I kinda breeze through the dialogue), this one only took 7, and that involves getting totally lost at one point, which never happened in the others. It's not about the time itself or the amount of content so-much as how uninspired the experience felt compared to the first two games. The world map has large swaths of space. The desert, for instance, feels larger than in the first two games, but without any interesting navigation, and only two dungeons. It's mostly just space filled with monsters. The same can be said of the swamp, or the ice fields... And speaking of which, this is the third game with the same biomes. We've gotten some new monster types, which is nice, but so much is still going through the same hoops. Lava land, desert land, ice land, swamp land... it's as predictable as a Mario game, but without that one crazy zone to throw things for a loop. It doesn't help that many of the quests end up feeling the same too (oh boy, pixie dust again!) Is it awful? No. I recognise that these are mostly RPG comfort food. But even with comfort food, I'd love to see a cloud city, an underwater area, a dense jungle, ruins that span an entire dungeon... really just new things. It's fantasy! As for the things the game does add, they're super hit-and-miss. The information gathering system was awful, and felt like another way to take the limited content and pad it out (rather than 6 unique quests, just make one quest that involves talking to six people scattered around the world!) The new enemy types were nice, and shifting buffs to work on a 24hr cooldown rather than expiring at midnight was nice, though an auto-buff system would be appreciated. In conclusion, this game had the air of obligation on behalf of its creator, which is a bummer since the first two felt like real passion projects. I don't mind recycling in terms of the UI and overall gameplay elements, but not only is this the third time with many of the same quest objectives, plot-beats, and locations, but it's also the worst iteration of each. I didn't even mention that most of my equipment ended up being purchased because I rarely found interesting gear (which is a reversal from the first game, where I never bought anything). It's not awful, and if you've played the first two and want more, you'll get more... but you might also find yourself asking, for the first time, if that's ALL you want. I'm rooting for an Amberland 4 (or some spiritual successor) that brings some much-needed freshness.
I very much did not like the first Legends of Amberland game. The second one seemed like it improved things a bit enough that I gave try to the demo to this one and was impressed enough to give the full game a chance. I wasn't amazed, but the incremental improvements since the first game have made this one decent. It's not amazing. It's pretty easy and monster AI is non-existent, but it does scratch the MIght and Magic itch for going around big overworld and annihiliating everything. Most importantly, the game does not overstay its welcome. The time I spent with it is exactly as much time as I wanted to spend on it and I was fairly thorough.
If you've played either of the first two Legends of Amberland games, this is more of the same: short, easy dungeon crawler about filling in an automap while systematically killing everything in sight. That's not a bad thing- if it ain't broke, and all that- though I am starting to wish for more from this series. Improvements since #2 are incremental- two new classes and some QoL- notably, buffs are now timed instead of expiring at midnight. The overall game experience, however, has barely changed. I won't even try to make the plot sound interesting. You visit a guy at a tavern, who tells you to speak to the king, who tells you to speak to the chancellor, who sends you to speak to some wizards, etc., etc., until the game throws a final boss at you, then you beat him senseless and win. Along the way you run down various subquests and depopulate dungeons for gear and experience. Enemies don't respawn, so the game is never really challenging, since you can always fall back, heal up, and jump back in. And when the enemies are too hard, you can always save scum. In all, it's a good short game for RPG fans to decompress between 100-hour epics, and that's all it wants to be. And all it has to.
5.5/10
Not as good as the first two. Feels borderline like a cash grab though there's still some enjoyment to be had. Very disappointing new classes, they're just reskinned fighters with equipment restrictions and no fun abilities or anything. Other "improvements" are very basic. Probably won't ever finish the game because it's just not as fun as LoA2 and there isn't enough new stuff.
Pros:
(same as previous games) - Still captures that old school Might & Magic feel - 7 party members is rather unique and I love having larger groups - Combat can be fast paced if you want it to be - Has some quality of life features that the older games it's based on don't have
Mehs:
- Group composition and positioning are too restrictive
Cons:
- It barely got any races, classes, spells, portraits, etc. Rather disappointing and it's the main reason the score isn't higher. This could have just been a DLC - It also didn't improve the UI or any other frequently mentioned annoyances from the first game the dev is surely aware of - Even if you have a Healer, you cannot remove many status effects for a long time. Going back to town to do that kinda blows - Some severe class imbalance that could have been addressed but almost nothing was changed here Editing to say that I'm sticking by the score after many hours. Some areas in the game are 100% copy/pasted from previous games. Some quality of life features were removed. There's less cool gear vs LoA2. Not worth full price compared to other CRPG options. Just disappointing overall.
Compared to the prior two games in the series, it's more of the same (good way) but also more of the same (repetitive way). Balancing feels a bit better, wizards seem tuned to be more competitive with warriors for longer (plus long-term buffs are better handled), and the loot system is improved. Dungeons have better use of secret doors and traps and such. Combat was mostly engaging with a weird spike around three quarters of the way into the game, but I did miss clearing a few areas on Hard mode. Story is still pretty one-note (albeit sometimes unexpectedly funny). I still enjoyed it, but there wasn't anything that felt like an obvious 'big change' from the player POV. It is neat to see how quickly the series has adopted its own tropes from game to game. Anyways, this type of RPG with modernized controls is awesome and I love to see 'em.
Don't base this review on my hour and a half play time. I've spent the last week plus binging this entire series and loving it. I have a very soft spot in my heart for the Might & Magic games (not HOMM, but the OGs). Their sense of whimsical adventure and game design were always very appealing to me. Not to mention the large maps and gamebooks (back when we got games in boxes and they came with stuff like that). So the Amberland series of games does a great job of scratching that itch. It's a wonderful throwback to simpler times and 'turn off the brain' RPGs. The first game in the series is pretty rudimentary, but serves as a good introduction to the game play style. The second expands with many smaller features that flesh out the general nature of these types of games. Amberland 3 so far has been more of the same - adding small tweaks and enhancements to polish and expand on the games systems. This is literally the best thing next to going back to the original Might & Magic games and Jon Van Caneghem would be proud. I really have no complaints - even some of the later grindy combat is a throwback to how these games evolved, and I'd have it no other way. As long as they keep making these, I will keep buying them. Thank you to the dev for bringing back fond memories.
