The Last Citadel is one of those games that look really nice on the store page, but when you play it, it's the complete opposite. It's like I was playing an Early Access game, rather than a completed game. You're just thrown into the game without much explanation (most stuff is obvious though). Levels are uninspiring and dull, enemies are too few & far in-between, even on the highest difficulty. I think I would've enjoyed it a bit more if there were more enemies to fight as you're running through the map. It felt empty, and that's kind of a disappointing thing within a roguelike. There's not a lot of variation when it comes to enemies and the game doesn't have a lot of content or much replayability vs other roguelikes. There's also an overly abundant amount of upgrade stations when you literally have no currency to upgrade from any of them until you FIND enemies to obtain upgrade currency. Even then you won't have enough to use all of the upgrades that spawn in a single map. Special upgrades start off costing 25 currency, but weapon upgrades start at 50. Would be better if each individual upgrade started off free and gradually increase in price, but it all starts off too high. There's an okay amount of classes like DPS, Tank, Support, Healer, Melee, or create your own. The biggest downside to majority of the classes is that they share the same abilities and doesn't make them that unique. There are roguelike upgrades you can find throughout maps, but it's your regular 5% upgrade for this and that, and nothing really stood out. I don't particularly enjoy the third person camera and how it's setup. Feels like I'm playing an MMO. Character animations are slow and feel very "safe". Same with enemy animations. I played a Tank at first and when shooting there's so much bloom it's like I was playing a bad iteration of Fortnite. After, I played a Melee class and I expected somewhat faster gameplay, but it was all a slow combat feeling, rather than something that should be a bit faster that you can enjoy zooming through and owning everything. Boss fights weren't bad at all. That was probably the only thing in this game that was worth experiencing. Overall, I cannot recommend this. Everything is thrown into a map without care. It's more of an empty experience where I'm fighting bloom to finally shoot enemies or even find enemies in very large, empty maps.
Sadly this should have been an early access release. Lighting is my number one issue with this games. Brights are to bright and the shadows are way to stark. I don't know how they looked at it and said it's good for 1.0. It's not like I'm the only person who's mentioned this. I had to fiddle around with setting that should've been default to alleviate the visual and functional problems. Getting the contrast and brightness just right so that my lighting would kind of blend it in. When turning the other way with your character facing the screen, the bullets go in the other direction. No back pedaling and no character snapping in the direction you're shooting. The count down text is one of the little things that tells you that this is under cooked. No special font just the place holder left in the game. I hope the dev releases updates to fix these problems that an early access would have given them more of a chance to fix. hopefully this game transforms because I really do like the magitic concept.
Look, I don't hate this game. I wanted to like it, I really did. But my very first run I made it to the final area without ever dropping below half health or ammo, with almost 20 passives loaded up, and I only died then because the enemies in the last zone suddenly 2-shot you when they'd been doing no damage beforehand. I think this game needs some tweaking - it's very beautiful to look at, but it lacks a sort of cohesive vision, and there doesn't seem to be any story to speak of - why am I in space? Why am I fighting demons in space? Why is everything steam powered in space? And the enemy variety leaves a lot to be desired as well; most enemies just sort of run at you or fly around. I think there's something here. You have cool weapons that are punchy and fun to use. Your tutorial is in depth and effective. Controls are responsive. Music is rad. Game looks beaaaaautiful! It just needs a little balancing, some tweaking to enemy ai and variety. Nothing that can't be added post-launch, but in this current state, I really can't recommend it except to the most diehard roguelite fans who are really desperately waiting for the next Risk of Rain 2 dlc.
Active Dev, fantastic first project, the passion and work is obvious! A lot of variety, and worth the price-tag, especialyl co-op! The Hardest Difficulty requries some really good RNG and rewards coordination!
I really love this game, which is a shame because I have yet to have a run that didn't get killed by the game completely locking up and having to be killed by the task manager. :/ It's fun as hell, if you can play it. *Update: The devs are super responsive, and frankly go above and beyond to note and resolve issues. Please support these folks if you can, the game is super fun and they deserve all the success.
The game has a cool concept, and I think the enemy designs are decent at least in the beginning (never got past the 1st boss). I also like the between missions currency, the weapons I've tried, and the abilities as well But there is a severe performance issue that happens just randomly that not only causes me to get frame lag, but also it causes the sensitivity to spike by an insane degree during this time which causes me to basically be unnable to play the game correctly. The camera could also could use some work for the guns, and I believe so can the artstyle/lighting as right now it looks very early game I've attached my PC specs so the developer has an idea of what to do and how to optimize the game better.
i liked it at first but its buggy asf cant play it at all now and steam has a hard time closeing it my dude went dark and now i lost all of my progress and cant acces anything
For this price - very strong game. Also given the fact it is a first game for a solo dev i am impressed of what this game is. Sure, it is not that long as campaign, but it have various unlocks (weapons, cosmetics, etc.) which adds additional time for players. Very good performance and optimizations with very few complains here and there (not game breaking ) I hope this game will reach more people and give the dev incentive to add more features and content since the base is solid. Strongly recommend!!!
This game is fun, the guns are punchy and varied, the dash is fun to use, there are lots of build to try and the difficulties are definitely a step up from one another! For the price the game offers a lot and I mean A LOT in terms of weapons, passives, actives, skins, etc. To The Dev: Thanks for stopping by during the stream today, lovely to meet you! And thank you as well for how well you dealt with the feedback, I think the game is fantastic and at the pricepoint offers incredible value in terms of unlockables (weapons, skins, passives, actives etc), a couple of pieces of feedback from my end are: -Mouse smoothing should not be enabled by default -Crosshair customization would be nice (I'd love to just have a dot) -For me (and I am not a major rogue lite guy myself) the three stages are cool, but after a couple runs it could potentially get stale having the enviroments in the same order, so having them a bit more mixed or adding potentially a bit of nature to the maps or something to a few of the levels would be a nice touch (saw the roadmap, excited for the wave survival mode and new area!) -The weapons are awesome, though it would be nice to perhaps have a more noticable change when upgrading them in tiers (sounds, colours of tracers etc to make them feel a bit more powerful) -It might be good to manually set the first mission that players get at the quest giver (so they get a good idea of the missions) as some are not ideal for first time players. Love what you are doing! thanks for making a fun game at a price that a normal human can afford 🙂
This game is worth $20 easy. Anything less than that is a steal. This always happens with games that are honestly difficult. It doesn't hold your hand It doesn't hand you a tissue when you cry. This game asks you to get good or go home. And unfortunately it's not for everyone. At this point my 3 man group has managed to unlock 6 of the 9 rewards hidden behind completions. We've not beaten the second boss on Raider and that's what makes us keep coming back, The game is hard but it feels like there's things we could've done better. Different builds, different group comps, different wave defense strategies. This game is a GEM. It's tragic that the generation of gamers in 2026 don't appreciate content that truly tests your skills. Currency management, wave management, aim, movement and pathing, Ability cooldowns, teamwork. You need to learn all of these skills or you will die. Super Mario bros 3 on NES released in the 80s is harder than 99% of games released in 2026. This game is giving Nintendo a run for their money. The DEV is extremely responsive in discord and seems to care a lot. +rep
