Mild Immersion
Our frustration with other Japanese learning games is that while they teach hiragana and words, they rarely (if ever) use these learnings in actual conversations. Almost everything is out of context. A random character, word, or sentence here or there. On the other hand, trying to learn Japanese by watching anime or reading manga is overwhelming (for a beginner).
We try to strike a balance between these two worlds. This game strives for “Mild Immersion.” We want to immerse you in Japanese as much as possible, but only beginner Japanese. We want you to feel confident that any Japanese that comes your way is something you’ve been taught and are capable of understanding at a basic level.
Small Step Immersion
This game also strives for “Small Step Immersion.” We want to immerse you in Japanese one small step at a time. After learning a new hiragana, you will soon learn words spelled with that hiragana and immediately start seeing and hearing those words in dialogue and battle. Slowly, but surely, your vocabulary and reading ability will grow as the game gently immerses you, more and more.
We believe context, immersion, and fun are key to effective learning. This game isn't just an RPG with Japanese flashcard-type battles. It is much more.

The Adaptive Dialogue System helps you learn by doing. It determines whether to show dialogue in Japanese or English based on your current knowledge. The more Japanese words and grammar you learn, the more dialogue will appear in Japanese!
For example, consider the following sentence: "doko iku?" (Where are we going?)
If you don't know one of the words "doko" (where) or "iku" (go, going), then this sentence will be shown in English. This is to avoid frustrating you with content you haven't yet learned.

However, if you know both words, it will be written in Japanese hiragana.
Pressing a button displays the "roumaji" of the sentence. Roumaji uses the English alphabet to describe Japanese sounds. A second press displays the English translation.

I've been learning Japanese for 7 months and tried other Japanese learning games like Wagotabi (almost done) and So to Speak (only played a few minutes of the demo before getting bored). I tried the demo of Hiragana Forbidden Speech for 40 minutes and I ended up enjoying it and bought the full game. The dialogue is a pretty impolite/rude and causal compared to the very formal and polite textbook Japanese that Wagotabi teaches. Though I recommend playing both games for people who are starting out learning Japanese or are at N5 level. The art and storyline isn't the greatest and its like the whole budget was put into anime-style voice acting where everything is over the top, but somehow its very charming. It makes learning Japanese fun and the humor in the game is pretty silly.
So far this game has been great! The way it makes you think fast somewhat with the "fights" seems to really help solidify your learning more... I think at least. Its slow to start but it wasnt kidding that it will increase the japanese depending on how fast you seem to pick it up... I really like it as someone that tends to prefer a fast pace that's more engaging. The story is not bad but overall the method of learning just seems to work so much better than I had anticipated! Worth every penny... And quite helpful for someone going to Japan soon too haha I feel I may play this one a few times to be sure but in 3 hours Ive got 20 hiragana and 24 words... not including some I already knew. Not bad at all as someone who couldnt read a single character only understood some roumaji prior!

Actually: Depends. While the game as such is ok and seems to prefer un over hai, it also feels like it's a gameboy/telefoon game transfered to pc. Especially on a ultra-wide it's a iesie-pitsie tiny window in the middle with no opties to enlange or whatever. [edit] there is a fullscreen through alt-enter which is only mentioned on the very first screen in small characters at the bottom. Oh well.. I also feel that they keys react a little slow, but that can be proton as I play under linux. As for the game, it's ok, it has the look and feel of an older Zelda game, but explanations are comprehensive. It's to early to say if I actually learn something, but if you're an absolute beginner, you will learn the basics.
This is a great way to learn Hiragana! I'm a Japanese beginner, and this is a great introduction. Not to mention it's entertaining and fun to play! I recommend playing with a notepad nearby, so you can practice new Hiragana as you learn them!
Great way to learn hiragana in a fun way.
I wasn't sure how much use this game would be or if it'd be fun. But it's really really good! A super fun game, fun story and I'm learning quite a lot quite fast, I'm shocked honestly. Amazing work dev team!
I did not expect this game to be that good, the story is fun, the graphics make me think about pokemon when I was a kid, and i am learning basic japanese at the same time. INSANE!!
すげえ! A fun and good asset to learn Japanese basics. It's combat constantly train you in Hiragana and vocabulary (there is 250 words). The game teaches a bunch of grammar with examples as well but just through long dialogues and occassional quizzes. Sometimes the game feels unnecessarily verbose. I finished the basic playthrough which was quite fun. The game offers a second one and multiple difficulty modes, assuring some replay value - haven't tried yet but if I'll ever get serious about learning Japanese, I'll likely will.
Allowed me to get into Japanese properly if you reading this forget the apps and textbooks this will do nothing but confuse you and quite honestly bore you to the point of giving up. THIS is the game that will get you past the N5 into actually having something to work with in the future studies. Its definitely worth every penny what you get from it is invaluable!
If you like the JRPG, it's a good way to start learning Japanese
