Edolie is an RPG with a well written script, interesting environments, and decent gameplay. The story is interesting and the underlying mystery is fun to unravel. The characters have depth and the script provides a great balance of humor and substance. There are a multitude of sidequests, however none of them wield much of any kind of reward. The battle system is marred by a lack of equipment, and battles seems to make up for being scarce by providing enemies with ridiculously high health and attack power. Still, it is doable. Overall I would say that Edolie is a great game for point and click adventure fans, but those hoping for a classic RPG should expect more story than action.
Really enjoyed this game. Bears a stiking similarity to other Eridani Games releases and the influence of the Aveyond Series from Amaranth Games can be felt. Characters are interesting and have definite personalities. Visually, it is a beautiful RPG Maker XP-style game with well-drawn art, and my personal favorite menu bar style (borrowed from the Aveyond Series) along the bottom of the screen. All that said, I do wish there were more chances to explore and slightly less linear gameplay. After a certain point, you cannot deviate from the path. Meaning that if you intended to complete some side quests before facing the final boss, you have not got this option unless you do so IMMEDIATELY. I am not sure if there are multiple endings, but the ending I got was generally a good ending, but not as satisfying as I'd like. I'd love to see the characters be a bit more developed by the end of the game, particularily the protagonist, as she seems to experience the least change in the game. Overall, the game is enjoyable. If you're like me, you'll appreciate the ability to fairly easily dodge the enemies, and the high focus on story. The one issue I really cannot get past in this game is the expensive healing items, coupled with the moderately overpowered enemies, and certain party members being near useless in the later chapters (you get 6 by the end). If you want a RPG Maker Fantasy game, really love Eridani Games' content or are looking for a game that's very story-oriented, this game is for you. If you're looking for a traditional RPG Adventure game, you may want to look elsewhere.
Okay, I already wanted to quit like 4 hours in, but I forced myself to complete this game so I could properly review it. Even if that meant replaying over and over again for a total of 33 HOURS until I got all the quests I possibly could and all the Troll Trees. I will start off by saying this: Edolie is aesthetically beautiful and it has amazing adventure music. However, the gameplay killed me and the story was not worth it. I would have enjoyed the game more if battle mechanics weren't included. (It would've been better to have more substantial story/character quests instead of an annoying battle system). I went out of my way NOT to battle in this game because I hated it that much. It's a clunky turn-based battle system and I normally like turn-based rpgs, but I felt that it was pretty useless in this game, it was more frustrating than anything. Edolie is supposed to be about the story, but the battling got in the way of it imo. The story itself is mildly interesting, but the characters are all 2D and make decisions based off cheesy, unbelievable anime logic. I only had a flickering interest in the lore and zero interest in any of the main characters. In fact, the person I liked most was the NPC painter, Emory, who painted all of the main characters EXCEPT the protagonist cuz she was boring af and y'know what? I don't blame him lmao. The game has beautiful maps, but they're so huge and it's irritating to explore everything and travel to the end of a map, only to be told "hey, for this quest you gotta go ALL the way back". Repeat like 5x per town. Some quests and quest solutions don't trigger until you complete other quests. So you'll spend forever trying to complete one quest, only to realize you're unable to complete it until you get to a certain point and you never really know when that point is. Not to mention if you leave town, you can't go back and complete whatever's unfinished in that town. This game is built around you interacting with everything to find out what they want you to do, but THEN there are decisions you're thrust into and you're not allowed to undo them, even when you belatedly realize what you were actually meant to do. For example, there's a quest to find a cat. One of the characters turned me to a certain path with the cat and I did what he suggested, only to realize that the cat was meant to fulfill a DIFFERENT side quest that doesn't activate until later on and I couldn't go back and undo that decision. There have been many times like this, where I didn't realize until it was too late that I should've chosen something else and the game didn't give me an opportunity to fix that. I had to restart a lot because I LIKE completing all of the quests properly and it drives me crazy seeing notifications saying the quest is unfinished or knowing I messed it up. My workaround this was saving nonstop. This game doesn't really give you any helpful hints when you get stuck, so you just run around clicking on everyone and everything until your characters say something about a quest or the main storyline. I didn't want to invest in the strategy guide because I heard it's not very helpful, so I had to rely on old forum question&answer posts whenever I got stuck. Thankfully the people who played Edolie provided me a significant amount of information needed to complete everything. I've had to replay so many times I wrote my own personal walkthrough. Highly doubt I'd ever play this again. If I did, it would be to show my friends how frustrating it is.
If you're a fan of any games made by Amaranth or John Wizard, definitely give this game a go. (Especially if it's on sale!) I've played all of the games by this creator and this one in particular is one of my favorites. Pros: +Replayability as it has multiple endings (they don't significantly add to the story, however). +Adequate length for it's price. +It's incredibly charming for an RPGmaker game, it doesn't have those chibi squashed character models which I personally hate. +It's a beautiful RPG in both story and pixelart. Granted, while it may not be original it doesn't use garrish colour schemes or ugly palettes. Cons: -Strategy guide is overpriced, and you can find the answers to your problems through the Eridani forums anyway. -You can't re-visit locations once you've moved on to finish sidequests. Ever. -One character is introduced far too late in the game to have any sort of development. Overall, I would buy this game again because I love these types of RPG's.
My Playtime: 15.5h (finished the game, Edilia route)
Intro
Edolie is an RPG Maker game about a young woman and her elf friend that are going on an adventure. In it, she'll travel between places, receive side quests, and solve some optional riddles. The game offers a lot of optional quests that are almost impossible to complete unless you are playing with a guide. Pros: - 3 difficulties - A lot of side quests and secrets to solve - 3 routes that give some optional, route-exclusive contents Cons: - Unable to backtrack to previous areas - Enemies can be hard to beat, even on the easiest difficulty - Side quests tend to be vague to solve Specs Intel Core i5-9300H 2.40GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
Should you buy this game?
Yes. If you are looking for an RPG Maker game that is focused on quests, buy this game at a sale. Don't try to play it without a guide though - you'll get bored talking to people several times just to make sure you don't miss anything.

In-Depth Review

Visuals
Areas are varied despite their forest theme. They can be too vast for their own good though - some areas will span between 3-4 large screens, and you'll go back and forth between them a lot. That being said, I'm most impressed with the outdoors. Pathways are placed in the main path, making it easier to find the optional contents. The only complaint I got lies in the town - some houses might not be obvious enough since they are given an entrance on the side.
Story
The story focuses more on the characters' journey rather than the disaster that is brewing in the main story. The story is mostly a heart-lighted one - I'm more interested in knowing where they will travel next rather than the disaster because of that. This is reflected in the ending as well since you can see what happened to the characters after the main plot. The writing is okay, although I do wonder about the main character's relationship - I feel that the progression is way too fast. As for the ending, everything is concluded nicely, although the game seems to leave room for a sequel. Since it has been years since the first game, it's safe to say that we are not getting that sequel though. Some questions will be raised in the ending, and although it piqued my curiosity, I don't mind it being left as it is.
The Game
Gameplay The game is focused on side quests; you need to talk to people and explore between areas to get them. However, some people will only give side quests when you have a specific party member in your party, while some are timed. This makes it hard to locate them all, and the journal doesn't help in telling you where and who the quest givers are either. Moreover, completing the quests can also become another annoyance since you either have to talk to everyone in the area or wait until you gain access to a certain area to continue its progress. It's almost impossible to get them all without a guide, and I admit that I missed some in my playthrough too. You'll have to walk a long way to complete quests. There are a lot of quests that you need to finish in Edolie, and most of them are fetch quests - you need to walk between places, usually traversing a very long forest map, to talk to the other people. This can be tedious, especially with the hardly existent music and repetitions if you don't plan your route efficiently. That being said, the side quests are abundant. They serve as a perfect distraction for the main story, and I had fun doing them once I know what to do. Some secrets are also available in the game, giving you a good reward if you manage to find them. Combat Battles can be tough, even in the easiest difficulty. I found that my party members can get one-shotted by enemies in the late game. I'm not sure if it's because I hardly do any battle, but I found it weird since I had to spend so much effort to beat the game in the easiest difficulty. This might happen because I only battled all enemies at least once though - it is easy to avoid the enemies since the maps are big. Characters are unbalanced. The game seems to rely heavily on skills late game, making MP-based characters to be the power hitter. All MP-based skills will usually deal 3k+ damage to the enemy, while a normal attack by the best physical DPS only deals ~1k at most. However, there is only one character that has the skill to recover their MP - you will be forced to either go to a healing spot or use items after battle. Luckily, healing spots are abundant in latter areas, although it still becomes a problem in the final boss, especially since they have a lot of HP. Length and Difficulty I finished the game in 15.5h. The game offers 3 routes that you can choose, giving you some exclusive content that you can explore. The main story is mostly the same though, and I don't find much difference between the routes after some research. The game offers 3 difficulties. I chose to play in the easiest one since I prefer to have my characters healed after level up. I'm glad that I chose to play in that difficulty though - free healing spots are scarce in the beginning areas, especially if you don't know where most things are, and battles can be tough in new areas. Luckily, the game uses a touch-encounter system so you can always try to battle the easier one to get the most EXP.
Conclusion
Edolie reminds me of John Wizard games at first. It turns out to be somewhat different, with this being of lower quality. You need to spend a lot of time figuring out the side quests due to its vague instructions. Luckily, you can always use a guide to mitigate that. There are also other issues such as the combat difficulty, but the game's quality is still good enough if you manage to get the game for cheap. It has a lot of content, beautifully-designed maps, and decent story. It's currently sold only for $1 in Fanatical's RPG Maker bundle with Last Word (my review) and RPG Maker XP, which is a steal at that price. If you played a lot of RPG Maker games in that price range, you'll notice the difference with this one. It feels more "professional" with fewer issues than the others. TL;DR: Boring beyond belief. A point and click with all the disadvantages that a RPG coat of paint can add to the genre. Useless fights, and having to walk through each and every map with no logical sense as to what do to next, even with the help of the journal to list your current 2 or 3 objectives. After 3 hours of playing, my main character is level 6 and I'm still in the second town of the game because every single mini-quest requires you to walk across each screen of the town, back and forth endlessly, until you stumble upon the right NPC. There's no indication anywhere, and you can't even make mental notes because the quest items only appear after you've unlocked the related quest.
Nearly two hours in, and I'm bored stiff. The combat is too easy on the highest difficulty, the sidequests are all fetch quests with minimal direction, my main character seems like a boring flake and I don't get any sense of progress from anything I do. Does it get better? Perhaps. But I'm not hooked, and I'm not going to wait any longer for something interesting to happen. Also, the strategy guide is a total ripoff. Seven dollars, and it doesn't tell you about any of the game's secrets or give details on sidequests.
You don't really play Edolie, you kind of stumble through it. You don't really know where everything is so you have to revisit everything a couple of times. The combat seems like an afterthought, so I might as well assume it was, but then you really only have the top-down walking simulator going on about a girl who just can't say no. Two hours in, I have yet to find the crimson in the crimson harvest, or even the harvest for that matter.
I bought this game in a sale for really cheap, but it totally worth the whole price without any discounts. The game has a really nice enjoyable theme and really nice art work. Love how happy this game is meanwhile also everything is turned upside down by evilness. The story itself is also really nice, there totally has been thought good about it and all makes sense in the end. Even though the game isn't that hard, the final boss really is hard. It takes a really long time. Because of that I didn't played it for a few little months and just now tried it again. Once you understand it, it will get easy but still takes a lot of time. So I realised I gave up way too soon. Regretting that now. The only down point I would give this game is about the little side missions you can do. I would go out and search for whatever I needed to find but when you realised you've gone way to far into the game, you cannot finish that quest anymore. Meanwhile it keeps staying in your journal. But anyways, a really good joyfull game for that price. :3
I love to play the JRPG from the golden age. Now if you ever played one of the (too many) games from another publisher (first letter A ends with ldorlea) than you'll know what you get here. The game is BORING!!!! I've now played over 5 hours. And guess what...I still run from every fight...mind you if you confront a monster I haven't found a run button. Why running? Because my party is sh$t. 1 Fight and they need to rest (level 10!) potions are too expensive and resting spots are seldom. Add that the characters only slowly walk around.... It is an 8 year old game sure, but even than RPGMaker games were done with more comfort.
