Mild Immersion
Our frustration with other Japanese learning games is that while they teach hiragana and words, they rarely (if ever) use these learnings in actual conversations. Almost everything is out of context. A random character, word, or sentence here or there. On the other hand, trying to learn Japanese by watching anime or reading manga is overwhelming (for a beginner).
We try to strike a balance between these two worlds. This game strives for “Mild Immersion.” We want to immerse you in Japanese as much as possible, but only beginner Japanese. We want you to feel confident that any Japanese that comes your way is something you’ve been taught and are capable of understanding at a basic level.
Small Step Immersion
This game also strives for “Small Step Immersion.” We want to immerse you in Japanese one small step at a time. After learning a new hiragana, you will soon learn words spelled with that hiragana and immediately start seeing and hearing those words in dialogue and battle. Slowly, but surely, your vocabulary and reading ability will grow as the game gently immerses you, more and more.
We believe context, immersion, and fun are key to effective learning. This game isn't just an RPG with Japanese flashcard-type battles. It is much more.
How to read, write, and pronounce hiragana

The Adaptive Dialogue System helps you learn by doing. It determines whether to show dialogue in Japanese or English based on your current knowledge. The more Japanese words and grammar you learn, the more dialogue will appear in Japanese!
For example, consider the following sentence: "doko iku?" (Where are we going?)
If you don't know one of the words "doko" (where) or "iku" (go, going), then this sentence will be shown in English. This is to avoid frustrating you with content you haven't yet learned.

However, if you know both words, it will be written in Japanese hiragana.
Pressing a button displays the "roumaji" of the sentence. Roumaji uses the English alphabet to describe Japanese sounds. A second press displays the English translation.

I've been learning Japanese for 7 months and tried other Japanese learning games like Wagotabi (almost done) and So to Speak (only played a few minutes of the demo before getting bored). I tried the demo of Hiragana Forbidden Speech for 40 minutes and I ended up enjoying it and bought the full game. The dialogue is a pretty impolite/rude and causal compared to the very formal and polite textbook Japanese that Wagotabi teaches. Though I recommend playing both games for people who are starting out learning Japanese or are at N5 level. The art and storyline isn't the greatest and its like the whole budget was put into anime-style voice acting where everything is over the top, but somehow its very charming. It makes learning Japanese fun and the humor in the game is pretty silly.

very solid for learning. long term results are yet to be known but after 1 playthrough i do generally know/remember most of the words taught and the hirigana. the harder details less so, but with another playthrough or moving on to other learning i should soon fully understand it. Besides the learning aspect the game itself, at least story wise is actually quite good. the dialog and story is very enjoyable with a good amount of comedy and seriousness, honestly im actually kind of sad it ended so aburptly and wish it continued to see how the story keeps progressing. HOwever the main complaignt i have about the game, is the game itself. the gameplay is as expected, however the menu's, settings and general game itself are out-dated and honestly poorly made. the game pretty much doesnt have a menu or settings, and what it does have is quite hard to understand. The game does not have any sort of support for any resolution except its own, meaning you have to force fullscreen causing many odd issues or play in windowed, which depending on the monitor may be quite small. While it was annoying and i really do wish it goes an update, the game isn't that old, not old enough it should be like how it is, i still recommend and enjoyed my playthrough.
Excellent game! Genuinely enjoying playing it and learning as I go. (I keep a notebook handy, that's how engrossed I am!) I emailed the developer for some learning advice and they were nice enough to reply back with advice, encouragement and handy links! Amazing!
I wish there were more games like this one; I loved it! I already knew hiragana but nothing else. I learned so many Kanji(s) in 30 hours. Not only that, but also grammar, phonetics and speech that you are very likely to encounter while watching anime. I loved the mini lessons and how you can go back to them before a quick test. I love how you can personalize the speed, the encounters rate, the amount of practice you need on each battle (you can practice before the real fights until you feel ready), you can also choose to skip lessons and do them once your brain has taken a rest. The battle mode is very smart as it adds new words once you've learned the first batch and I think the pace of that is perfect (considering all the personalization you can do) . If you feel like you can't take one more word or lesson you can take a brake and come back the next day, do some practice, then get back to advancing in the story. PS: I loved the originality of the story, (no spoilers) I'm sure I forgot to mention a few more things but, what matters is, I've had fun learning Japanese! I'm excited to replay the game with all the new words I've learned on my previous run, Love that option too! Such a fun way to learn a lot of basic concepts while having fun! 10 /10 I want more!!!!!
Learn Japanese RPG has a somewhat awkward game title and is wrapped in a rough RPGMaker exterior, but the quality of the learning offered is really good, giving you a nice overview of the Japanese language and giving you a strong start to continue your learning on your own after the game is over. The battle system is quite fun, drilling you on the fundamental alphabet (hiragana/katakana) as well as basic vocabulary. Typing game enjoyers (like me) will enjoy keying in words with a minor time pressure. The game also repeatedly emphasizes that it's all about learning first-and-foremost, so you aren't penalized for making mistakes. The game teaches you everything from the most basic construction of words, to basic vocabulary and sentence structure to even polite/casual/rough language styles. However, it doesn't bog you down with too many details and tries to keep things easy to follow. I suppose the intention is to keep a new learner engaged in keeping their momentum and accruing overall mastery of the basics, and if they want better understanding of certain concepts later they can look it up themselves. All of this is set to a fun enough story that takes you on an adventure through a world that doesn't take itself terribly seriously. It won't win any oscars, but it'll give you an impetus for moving from point A to B, learning Japanese every step of the way. I really enjoyed it, and I credit Learn Japanese RPG with helping me begin my Japanese learning journey. After finishing the demo, I bought the game and continued for around an hour everyday and finished the whole thing after around 2 weeks. The learning I've gained from playing has been a significant motivating force for me to continue learning on my own through other games and apps. I highly recommend anyone interested in learning Japanese to start their journey off with Learn Japanese RPG! Once you're done, keep your momentum by giving other games/apps a try (I used Renshuu). ALSO don't use Duolingo (its shallow and terrible for reviewing)!
10/10 I've been learning Japanese on and off for years. This game is by far the fastest method I've ever used to really truly and quickly pickup meanings of words and sentences. I'm so sad tho that it only teaches so much... I would love to see this game expand into something you could use to get to a native level if played enough. It's addicting and fun dialog keeps you interested, great explinations of everything. PLEASE DEVELOPERS - keep expanding the game to go to a native level. That would be amazing.
Motivierend und unterhaltsam. Es bringt einen dazu die Wörter/Begriffe und Silben zu lernen und macht Spaß. Dazu gibt es zwischendurch immer wieder Erklärungen zu Gebrauch und Grammatik (letzteres nicht zu viel). Nach längeren Sessions raucht der Kopf etwas :) Der Entwickler hat sich auf jeden Fall ein Lob verdient.
Very cool game! Learning vocab by fighting enemies is a really nice idea, the story is funny and the grammar explanations also helpful. Nice that you can skip hiragana studies if you already know them. I'm learning a lot even though I already know some basic Japanese already.
Pretty neat at teaching you lots of basic words and grammar. Easy to get into and basically requires no commitment so you're not likely to burn out starting your learning journey with this.
