LAPIN is a thoughtfully crafted 2D platformer developed and published by Studio Doodal that blends precise movement, gentle storytelling, and a hand-drawn aesthetic into a cohesive and emotionally resonant adventure. At first glance, the game presents itself as a cute platformer starring rabbits, but as the journey unfolds it becomes clear that LAPIN is built on a strong sense of place, history, and quiet perseverance. The story follows Liebe, a white rabbit forced to leave her underground home after human construction disrupts the burrow, setting her and her companions on a journey to find a new safe haven. This premise grounds the adventure in a subtle but effective theme of displacement and survival, giving emotional weight to what might otherwise be a purely mechanical experience. Platforming is the backbone of LAPIN, and it is executed with a clear emphasis on responsiveness and precision. Movement feels tight and intentional, with running, jumping, wall-climbing, and careful timing forming the core of traversal. Levels are designed to gradually teach and then challenge the player, introducing hazards, vertical layouts, and environmental puzzles that require mastery of momentum and spacing. While later sections can become demanding, difficulty is rarely arbitrary; mistakes usually feel like a consequence of misjudgment rather than unfair design. This balance makes success feel earned and encourages steady improvement rather than brute-force repetition. Beyond movement, exploration plays a significant role in shaping the experience. Each area contains hidden paths, optional challenges, and collectibles that reward curiosity. Seeds scattered throughout the world can be planted to grow flowers that reveal lore fragments, while maps, diary entries, and personal mementos expand the narrative context of the rabbits’ journey. These elements add texture to the world and encourage players to slow down, observe their surroundings, and engage with the environment beyond simply reaching the next checkpoint. Liebe’s diary acts as a living record of discoveries, giving players a tangible sense of progress that extends beyond mechanical completion. Character interaction is another quiet strength of LAPIN. Liebe is joined by a small cast of fellow rabbits, each with distinct personalities and histories tied to a legendary expedition that once shaped their community. Conversations with these companions are optional but meaningful, gradually building emotional connection and unlocking additional collectibles such as photo cards. Rather than relying on dramatic cutscenes, the game allows its characters to develop through small, reflective moments, reinforcing the feeling that this is a shared journey rather than a solitary quest. Visually, LAPIN stands out through its hand-drawn art style, which strikes a careful balance between warmth and clarity. Environments are colorful and expressive without becoming visually overwhelming, and character animations convey personality through subtle movement and expression. The aesthetic supports both the whimsical tone of playing as rabbits and the more contemplative undertones of the story. Complementing the visuals is a restrained but effective soundtrack that adapts to each area, using gentle melodies and ambient sounds to reinforce mood rather than dominate attention. Accessibility is also considered in the game’s design. While LAPIN is fundamentally a precision platformer, it offers difficulty options that make the experience more approachable for players who may be less comfortable with demanding jumps or tight timing. This allows a broader audience to engage with the story and world without compromising the satisfaction offered to players who prefer a more challenging experience. The result is a game that respects different playstyles while maintaining a consistent identity. That said, LAPIN is not without minor drawbacks. Some players may find the pacing of dialogue and narrative segments slower than expected for a platformer, particularly early on. Additionally, certain visually dense areas can make it harder to distinguish foreground from background during high-speed movement. These issues are relatively small in scope, but they can momentarily disrupt flow for players focused purely on traversal. Overall, LAPIN is a heartfelt and well-rounded indie platformer that succeeds by combining mechanical precision with narrative warmth. Its emphasis on exploration, character, and environmental storytelling elevates it beyond a simple action challenge, turning the journey into something quietly memorable. For players who appreciate tight platforming paired with a gentle, emotionally grounded story and a distinctive art style, LAPIN offers a rewarding adventure that lingers long after the final jump.
Gives vibes close to Celiste. Not as hard, but still very fun and warm story.
