Got this as part of a bundle and the game is awful. Most of the UI isn't translated from Chinese, graphics settings don't do anything, and the performance is terrible. Avoid at all costs.
TLDR: The epitome of jank and a half-baked Sekiro-like with half localization unfinished that doesn't even serve as a demo of what could be
I'm a simple guy. I don't like to be super negative on games, unless they are broken, unfinished or unplayable in some sort of way and The Last Soldier of the Ming Dynasty is all of the aforementioned. For the first two hours it was OK at most. The visuals were cool and it made me feel optimistic for what to follow given this has mostly positive reviews on steam (which is beyond of an exaggeration). But it's just bland. A pre-alpha at best. This is boss after boss sequence, with an constrained area filled with enemies in between. No VA, poor translated dialogues, buggy and unfinished menus. There's not much reason to experiment with builds neither to use the parry system, but usually spam the advanced technique along some basic skills. I even tried the dlc (I am not certain if purchase is required since I could start it from the menu without owning it) which seems mandatory for 100% completion and it was beyond a mess. Most items and quests are sill in chinese like the team randomly decided to abandon it. I could not for the love of it use the potion (seems like the blood jade's effect got stuck past unequipping it) and even when I managed to complete the 3 special boss areas, which are built in a roguelite manner, the progression is softlocked and I can't progress which is super disappointing for the time I ended up investing in this janky mess. I honestly cannot believe this game has been in a recent humble bundle (close combat collection) and even more, comes with a mostly positive rating on steam, which has probably to do with chinese fanboys being overly defensive about it. This needs to change. This is as negative of a review I can post, and I strongly advise anyone, no matter how much jank you can take or how much of a sucker like me you are for souls/sekiro likes, to steer clear from this piece of
enter your definition of frustration and disappointment
.
2/10 - janky gameplay - janky combat - janky animations - bugs - most of the settings are in chinese - chests you cant open - items you cant pick up + art syle - game sometimes freezes when you pause in combat and takes ages to unfreeze so you can continue
Not a bad game. I just couldnt get the parry react stab down. The combat seems to be fluid enough. Reminds me a bit of the Souls games. Gameplay Impressions: https://youtu.be/yLhVgzkZ-Kg
Full playthrough here: https://youtu.be/NC2gTiTIJ0c Combat is extremely smooth I wish the intro scene was translated, and some of the dialogue is a bit weird, but the lore items do a good job of piecing the story together sadly I don't think there's a way to scroll down the page at the moment so some of the lore description gets cut off there's a few little glitches, but the game has check points everywhere and you can save so it's not a problem. Some of the bosses are challenging which is great since again the combat is a lot of fun it has the right kind of difficulty where you can learn and overcome instead of just being hard because the game isn't made well so I appreciate that. It's a bit short, but it does have NG+ for replay too bad there's no steam achievements even though there's in game ones. I also couldn't upgrade certain sets of armor which is a shame because they looked really cool and the armor cosmetics change as they're upgraded so I would have liked to see what they turn into.
The game is literally a beta, pretty awful mechanics, to bad environment, basic, no story, nothing good at this state, last update is in 2025, maybe if they keep working on this for a long time, gonna be at least something enjoyable. now 1 of 10 most.
its a pretty good game, i think the devs took a look at Sekiro and thought " what if we took all of the fun parts of that game and give it a twist of our own?" The game has a really unique art style which is very well done, and all done in unity engine! However, dont expect to get the "fair but hard" treatment since late game bosses are guessing games since they attack so fast and they stunlock you to instant death At the moment of writing, translations could use a bit of work but all essentials are translated to english which is manageable. Developers are also working hard (though extremely slow) to fix the game's issues
The terrible first, its mainly in chinese but at least in game, its english witn sub titles. startup and menu is all in chinese...and no jump button the combat is where this game excels...the hit detection is the best ive played...its very similar to sekiro with souls like.... its a must buy if u like souls/sekiro...game is tough but very fun...and dont get any bs moments...u lost cause u messed up
