I tried getting into Labyrinth of Touhou 2 a couple times as I always heard good things about it, but for some reason or another, it never quite clicked for me. With Tri, I was finally able to get into this series and by god I am glad I did. It's a much more approachable game, not only due to its improved visuals and QoL, but also a more engaging story that got me hooked way faster. The battle system is incredibly well thought-out, with a lot of details that make it feel completely distinct from many other turn-based RPG games. I absolutely love the way the turn gauge works in this game and how much you can manipulate it, in many cases being able to get many turns before the enemy is able to act (And trust me, you'll NEED those). I also love turn count being an actual resource that influences the way many of the game's skills work. I have also never seen a frontline/backline system that works exactly like this game, and not only is it great to have a large party in a game that has a HUGE number of characters to pick from, it also opens up many interesting strategies, and if you do not take proper advantage of it, the bosses absolutely will screw you over. Not having in-battle items and revives being pretty much non-existent mid-battle is also a very interesting design decision that usually necessitates you to utilize your full party in order to take on its toughest challenges. The bosses also have specific patterns for you to learn, and eventually formulate a counter-strategy for. You are NOT gonna beat them on your first try, for the most part, and that is something I really appreciate! Everything just feels really tightly designed and comes together brilliantly to make for some of the most satisfying boss battles I've ever played in a game like this. And even random encounters occasionally throw a wrench in your way with the Rare Enemies and Horde Battles. On top of all that, it is all EXTREMELY FLAVORFUL from the Touhou theming and an absolute treat for fans. Character kits and a lot of the boss fights will have you constantly thinking "Oh, right, that DOES make sense for this character to do!" Exploration is done in an Isometric form, rather than the standard first-person affair for this kind of game, and it felt like an interesting perspective that worked to its favor. Dungeons slowly get a lot more complex, introducing many navigational puzzles and enviromental gimmicks, which I heard got a little backlash initially, but I am really, REALLY glad the dev decided to revert the "nerf" patch and the game's dungeons are intact in their original form, as they are much more enjoyable like this. Sometimes, it does get a little frustrating, especially the final floor of the last dungeon felt particularly brutal with how specific your movements have to be in order to progress, one mistake making you have to repeat all the steps - In a order you might have not even realized was the correct one to begin with! I'm ngl that one in particular really annoyed me. But overall, I had fun with the puzzles, and I'd much rather the game have this kind of challenge than just being a completely sauceless dungeon crawling experience that are just a means to an end in the way of boss battles. As if that wasn't enough, in what I hear is a first for this series, the story is actually surprisingly really good here! I loved the writing quite a bit, it has really cool themes and explores the inner psyche of the characters in a way I had honestly never seen before in any Touhou-related work (Not that this game is the only thing that does this! But I personally haven't experienced other examples such as it) I'm not entirely sure how well it would work, but as someone who, despite being a fan of the series, has somewhat minimal knowledge of the lore and any outside material, still enjoyed it a lot, I think it might still work! It did an excellent job of introducing Renko and Maribel for me as I had only really heard about them from the fanbase but never dived deep into the official works involving them. To me, it was a constant hook keeping me going forward to not only enjoy the boss battles, but see more of the story. This game has proven itself as an absolutely incredible JRPG experience, right alongside some of my favorites like Octopath Traveler, Etrian Odyssey and SMT games. Not only being the best Touhou fangame I've ever played at the moment, but just one of my favorite games overall. Heavily recommended for fans of Touhou, but if you're just really into DRPGs in general - This might be a good entry point into Touhou media, honestly!
I dream of this combat system becoming more mainstream so I have options to play JRPGs while needing to actually engage with gameplay mechanics.
After playing it a bit more, I've decided that this game is mostly a soulless dungeon crawler. I want to love this game, but it doesn't do enough things right to hold my attention. The difficulty curve is also massive, which would normally be fun but borders sharply on frustration here. All in all, it's a decent game, but it's just not something that you're going to love if you want a fun upbeat adventure in Gensokyo. It's more like Wizardry with a Touhou skin. I hope you'll still play it if that's what you're into, but I wanted something a little better.
Although I've been aware of Touhou for many years, this is the first game I've played in the setting. I got a good amount of enjoyment out of this title, and am quite satisfied that it was worth the price. This is a straightforward dungeon crawler built around combat rather than puzzles. The use of treasure chests to encourage exploration and the huge amount of ways to manipulate characters (skills tree choices, training, magical strengthening, tome usage, equipment, equipment buffs, and levels) presented sufficient stimulation to carry me to the end of the game. The boss fights are like tests. Each has specific skills, strengths, and weaknesses that can be countered by different combinations of the cast. For some bosses in the story it's possible to stack direct damage and ignore the mechanics, but a good chunk of the mid-late bosses have caps to how much damage they take from a single attack. As a casual player, I found such caps slightly frustrating, but I understood what the developer was aiming for. Unfortunately I never really got familiar enough with the cast to think "ah, for this fight I should have brought X and set her up with Y's buffs first" and many characters I never used at all. For those inclined to spend the effort investigating possible interactions I imagine the game might end up being quite easy. Still, I just about muddled through with only occasional reference to helper websites. The story was simple and serviceable. I suspect there were many references to other Touhou materials that completely flew over my head. The character art is of a style that suits my preference more than e.g. EtrianHD and quite consistent in quality. The audio is serviceable, but after a while I ended up muting the music in favour of my own. For me, completing the lunatic challenges would require the use of a very detailed guide and a lot of grinding for extra resources so I wouldn't have to spend several working days in the menus juggling things between characters. I ended up doing only a dozen before finishing the main story and putting the game down. Though the game doesn't support use of a mouse (keyboard or controller only!), the developer did add support for running in the background in windowed mode so I could have it on a second screen. There are also numerous settings for speeding up the game and turning off special effects. These small quality of life features were hugely important in keeping me playing. My most used characters were Aya, Marisa, Sakuya, Meiling, and Alice - all of whom have very simple skills to work with. Who will be on your list?
I will say first off is that this game is not nice. Exploration is good since it adds scenery compared to the 2nd game while moving around, and the goodies you can find are all visible on the map so if you are in for completion then it's easy to based on what you didnt collect yet. Do note that there are hidden paths sometimes, and the scenery kind of gives hints like an open gate, 2 pillars, or a path of wheat that extend further then it should. Holy bosses though who will humble you real fast from even the very first one encountered, which as you would expect, just gets harder the farther you progress, which can fun in their own way. Unlike labyrinth 2 which ended up be a kill before the boss moves (and this game does have strats to one shot almost every boss in the game), but as i figured out can be slow ran and beaten using strategy, or as another review puts it, a puzzle that you need to figure out, and is more satifying when you find the thing that clicks (with the exception of maybe 2-3 bosses in total which are actual BS). This game brings over many things from the 2nd game but expands on them, for one thing main equipment isn't found, only crafted and the material to do it is rare at best so for the most part isnt that much of a consideration. Elite and boss battles has a give up button, quick retry, and the option to both open the menu to swap unit formations, gear, and skills, but also has the option of grabbing someone from the lounge if you think they are needed in that moment. All in all, i like this game better then 2, but it definitely isn't for the feint of heart given the difficulty even on normal (though i played on hard), just GL and HF.
