Still one of the best aquatic game to date created by 2 very talented guy (one of them being the creator of Spelunky) I recall back in the old days the dev released the mod version for free, not sure if we can still find that nowadays. Grabbing this on steam just for nostalgic collection. The BGM is still one of my favorite, I still have the CD bought directly from the creator, may your soul rest in peace Alec.
Getting 100% was enjoyable in this aquatic metroidvania. approximate amount of time to 100%: 20-25h ~ Estimated achievement difficulty: 6/10 Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 1. Multiplayer achievements: No Multiplayer. Missable achievements: Yes*. (Fast travel turtles available) Grinding Achievements: A bit *. All recipes require farming for ingredients. DLC-Only achievements: No. Time-gated achievements: No. Speed-run achievements: Yes. Sea-horse race under 1 minute (Attempt late game when you have speed +2 recipes and a certain small fast form) RNG-achievements: No. Does difficulty affect achievements: No choice. Unobtainable/glitched achievements: No*. First achievement unlock: Entering open waters (30-40 minutes in so feel free to try before you commit). Is there a good guide: I used the ones on steam by PB and Marie Anette, I also used the wiki for recipes (aquaria.fandom.com/wiki/Recipes) Notes: * The game's code unlocks the achievement for the shrimp boss along with the rock crab boss for beating the later. This is a positive cause the shrimp boss is hard to reach, but still worth mentioning * Please note that the unlock all of the "Fast travel" turtle achievement requires the 2 dead-end turtles behind the race track. * once you have unlocked songs you need to know you can hotkey them with 0-9 on your keyboard! * There is no "real" fast travel or stage select. You'll have to swim toggling the minimap for a long while to get anywhere in particular, even the fast travel turtles don't let you select where to go, instead they just cycle their points. * the cooking screen is really bad. There's no option to quick cook something you have a recipie for, and no option to make 5x of something for example. You'll have to painstakingly go to a different ingreidents screen drag every ingredient one by one and cook individually then start again for the second dish. * To add to the point above you can only hold a max of 8 of each ingredient and the good recipies hog the same ingredients. you'll reload areas to farm leaves for hours. * The bosses and puzzles are cryptic. Without a guide it's almost impossible. Hitting a boss is sometimes indicated by them flashing red, sometimes not. this aspect could really use improving. * Remember in Skyrim when you'd pause the game mid combat to eat 20 wheels of cheese? This game is just like that but now you have to cook the wheels of cheese right there before you eat it.. And no, unlike Skyrim you don't have spells to heal.. so get cooking. * I can see why this metroidvania never really took off. While the premise is good and the gameplay is fun, it's clear the game design has some flaws that keep it just under "good". A re-mastered version with proper fast travel, and many quality of life cooking and shape-change improvements would be awesome. All that being said the game is still: Above 51%, Recommended.

Аквария - это игра, где финальный босс это воплощение анимации "when the boss battle has way too many phases"!
Aquaria is a little gem, especially considering the fact that it was released back in 2007 and developed by just two people. It surely deserves much praise for delivering a quite unique Metroidvania experience, focusing on the ability of the protagonist to use special songs to change form and unlock new powers. The hand-drawn graphics are impressively detailed, and the game map is quite large, with lots of secrets to find. However, it is worth noting that some aspects of the game didn't age too well: the controls feel especially clunky and because of that some sections are extremely frustrating to play through - the jump-climbing parts are just painful to pull off, and made me feel like I was playing Getting Over It. Exploration is generally rewarding but level design is not too great at times, with many dead ends and loops that frankly only seem to have been purposefully placed to make the player waste more time than needed, and some game mechanics (including some gimmick boss fights) are quite obtuse to figure out. The game would have also benefited a lot from at least a couple more fast travel spots, because the amount of backtracking needed to reach distant areas is seriously tiresome. If you can overlook the imperfections and embrace the flow - pun intended - of the game, Aquaria will reward you with an immersive - also intended - adventure enriched by an original and surprising storyline, rich visuals and a great, dream-like atmosphere. I'm glad I had the opportunity to catch up with it, albeit it feels very sad to know that a sequel was originally planned but it will never see the light of day due to the tragic fate suffered by one of its developers. A real, real pity.
It’s almost impossible to approach Aquaria without anchoring it to 2007. This was an "Indie Metroidvania" released before I was fully familiar with those terms, and before digital storefronts made small‑team projects feel commonplace. I don't think I even had a Steam account in 2007! For its time, it’s remarkably accomplished: you can see clear echoes of Ecco the Dolphin and Super Metroid, and the ambition behind it is unmistakable. Bit Blot was working hard to prove that a handcrafted indie title could stand shoulder‑to‑shoulder with the classics. But expectations have shifted. Today, I look to indie games for brevity, focus, and experimentation rather than faithful retro recreation. In that sense, Aquaria doesn’t quite transcend its era. It’s an important milestone in the rise of indie gaming—just not one that fully resonates with my modern sensibilities. A meaningful artifact, but a dated experience. 3 out of 5. On a binary scale, I'm recommending, but I'm not sure it is worth your time in 2026 or beyond.
This game is almost 20 years old now? I'm one of those people who wouldn't register a Steam account before a few more years after the time it came out. I wanted a quick play as I asked, "Has it aged graciously?" and the answer is "No, but also not enough for it to feel bad to play nowadays". I wasn't a fan of the pivot animation back in the day and it doesn't look any better today, getting especially awkward in some cutscenes, and keeping its contrast with the beautiful art. One of those games that look relatively better in screenshots than in motion. The underwater world is sprawling yet sparse, in line with the idea of being (mostly) alone in a vast ocean, but not translating just as greatly in terms of gameplay, feeling heavily padded out with some areas that have little more than nothing and a few enemies, with chances to save a game placed far between each other. The combat is quite basic, based around avoiding attacks and letting a lock-on of sorts take care of the enemies. It's also hard wanting to replay it for the story, knowing how it goes off on tangents eventually, and then nowhere, even if it's not the first game that never resolved its cliffhanger and won't be the last. Even if time hasn't been completely generous with it, it's still fascinating and atmospheric, something that is best enjoyed slowly, checkpoint after checkpoint. Reaching the surface of the water (the "Veil") for the first time is still an experience, even if later parts where Naija is forced out of the water are some of the most annoying (she can't walk, only leap around from point to point). I wouldn't even call Aquaria overrated in light of nowadays: its original release came at a time the market was much, much less saturated than it is today, and digital distribution on a mass level was still young. It was in fact one of the first games to really show what indie developers could do. It simply cannot recreate the impression it was capable of leaving when it was brand new, but it can still be liked today.
Incredible game the likes of which you'll probably never see again in your lifetime. Shame the author is no longer alive. I had the utmost faith that the sequel, and any other games they were planning, would have been priceless.
