Maybe recommended if you're a masochist? There are some interesting mechanics here, but for something that positions itself as a casual/light 4X, it's too frustrating to recommend. Maybe it's just me, but between the RNG and the difficulty ramping up constantly, it's just not really a pleasant experience. I'm a few missions into my first campaign, and every other turn, I'm getting random negative events that threaten to cause massive chaos. You can skip these by hitting Alt-F4 and starting over your turn, but they feel unnecessarily punishing to begin with. Maybe if there were more ways to mitigate such things (some skills/traits you can earn later can help with this, but not early on), some warnings, and/or if they were balanced by the occasional random good thing happening to you, but unless these things show up later and I've just been unlucky, it just feels unforgiving for no reason. I could see them more as a late-game threat, but I'm still just starting out and getting used to the basics. I guess this is part of the rogue-lite aspect... I've read in the forums that you're not "meant to" succeed the first time you play, but it's just not a fun time. Then again, I hate the core loop of roguelikes/roguelites (the whole "dying is fun" and "keep doing the same thing over and over" aspects), so maybe this just isn't the game for me. Probably my fault for having misguided expectations. I just wanted to play a light/casual 4X, but the whole experience just feels like it goes from bad to worse, so I'm wondering why I should waste my time on this instead of finding something else to play. Thing is, if I wanted something serious and challenging, I'd play a proper 4X. This is far too frustrating for "beer & pretzels".
Overall the game delivers exactly what it promises. It's real good. Pretty. Great loop. However when you begin playing you only have a single commander. If this commander is injured before you unlock a second one, you are forced to play crippled for the rest of the game. At this point you are better off restarting the entire campaign. I found this so discouraging that I can't give the game a positive review because I value my time. I've posted about this in the discussion boards. The moment a solution is in place I'll flip this review.
love the game, its a slow paced and very hard game. each faction plays a bit different and no game is ever the same. i have played at this point 47 hours and only got my first victory through a campaign now. you should enter the game expecting to fail and rage-quit a few times, don't expect an easy game from it. (hell, i wasn't even on hard mode!) i picked up, dropped, resumed, restarted, yelled, screamed, gave up, came back a year later, and loved it each time i did. not for the light of heart of easily angered, not everyone is a good fit for the title of 'tyrannical overlord of space'.
I wanna love this game. And I've played it a lot, I think. But the randomness involved just takes a big huge slurp out of the fun. A lot is made of the player guides of the random choices the player has to make after defeating a planet. But after a lot of play, you remember which are the safer choices, so those don't matter too much. What really sucks is you're doing well, you have a plan, and then suddenly the game says "Oh, by the way, now you have to panic because in three turns, something truly crappy is going to happen, and let's face it: chances of survival are pretty close to zero. (I've manage to survive one such random event.) You go from winning battles relatively easily, or at least being able to build up a decent fleet to take the fight to the enemy. And then out of nowhere, the opponents are five times as strong, you don't win a single battle, you can't get past that monster, and you don't have enough income to rebuild your fleet. This game is so close to being a really fun casual game. But when this random nonsense comes out of nowhere to end a mission and war, you find yourself wanting to throw your laptop across the room. The game doesn't even pretend to try and play fair. Almost as bad is when, for once (usually early in a war) you've managed to build a powerful fleet, have enough income rolling in to repair or upgrade, and you're about to make your final assault on your enemy and ... you win. You've managed to acquire enough planets, money, turn income, whatever. You satisfied some winning condition, and everything just ends. While one will always take the win, it's impossible to come away fully satisfied because everything you built up and planned is suddenly gone. Poof. I know the game has been abandoned by the developers. This review won't be read by anyone. But it just pisses me off how close this game came to being good. UPDATE: I enjoy the battles -- to a degree. I managed to advance far enough that I'm able to play the second race/civilization/whatever, the bzzzt creatures. The worst part about the game, the dice rolling to capture a planet, has been made worse. The 6 on each die has been replaced with some symbol that represents a zero. So now, not only does the game screw you over on dice rolls, they actually made the situation worse. (By "screw over" I mean, I've never seen a double six or a double five. I have however seen double ones and frequent one and zero combinations. I tracked it in one round and it was obvious that the dice are weighted to the low end values.) The second civilization ships are incredibly fragile. The cruiser, which was the mainstay of the first civ, is so weak it's useless. Unrelated to the new civ, if you get into a battle with DJ Daze, just surrender. The round is over. I've eventually beaten that creature on occasion, but it usually means sacrificing multiple fleets. There's something compelling here. I keep playing it because I like the battles and the strategy of trying to take over a system. But the cheating so-called randomness of the dice is freakin' crap. There's too much that is weighted against you and against which you can't do anything. There's such a good, fun casual game here that is ruined by these crappy aspects.
Solid lunch break game. Captures the 4X feel really well, without the tedium and micromanagement normally associated with the genre. Roguelite probably wasn't needed, but too late now. Good variety of stuff to do, combat is fun enough, etc. You won't play a hundred hours, but you'll enjoy your time.
Fun game, I was getting the hang of it when suddenly, the power went out. Now the game is locked. I even tried to install it on another computer, but it is locked in the same place. I tried uninstalling, then reinstalling, no good. Can anyone help me? I would like to continue my conquest of the Galaxy!
An interesting game that can be played in short sessions, or for longer marathons. Multiple factions and different card, commander, and unit options (upon unlock) provide replayability for future playthroughs.
