EDIT: I appreciate the developers explaining their design choices. And they are right. This vr stuff isn’t formulaic. There isn’t no easy answer, and I can’t imagine developing a game at the pace of innovation the vr world is going through. I’m not returning the game, and I hope that the devs are successful with making this game more comfortable for vr. I will double down on the fact that pressing a move forward button that doesn’t move in the direction you are facing is very disorienting. I had to move while looking down at my ‘chest’ to know where I was going. Original: This game has a few of the big NO NOs for vr. Strafing and movement set to keyboard/controller controll. I don't get vr sick easily but this game did it for me. There is no teleport mechanic. Also there is no easy way to tell which way 'you' are facing. The move forward key isn't relative to where you are looking. Even more vomit! I like the physics based knock over blocks idea, but this implementation is very difficult to play without getting sick. Even for 2 bucks on sale I'm considering returning it. Did run without lag on a radeon 7800 series card.
What is Kumoon: Ballistic Physics Puzzle?
Kumoon: Ballistic Physics Puzzle saw its release last November on Steam. It is the Steam debut of Finnish developer Lucky You Studio and so far is their only game on Steam. In Kumoon, players knock over boxes by ricochetting projectiles around a room. The developers are spot on when they claim it is a combination of a shooting gallery, billiards, platforming, and puzzle-solving. There is even a valid game mechanic comparison to the great Portal franchise. Although the game has VR features you do not need a headset in order to enjoy the game. In fact, as cool as the VR experience may be I found myself enjoying it equally as much without it. Therefore, I urge potential players not to avoid a purchase because you feel that you will be unable to gain maximum enjoyment from it.
Gameplay
The game takes place within short levels. There are three difficulty levels and a good tutorial. Your objective is to knock down boxes on each level. However, it is a little trickier than this. You need to score a certain amount of points on each level before progressing. Each box can be valued at up to 9 points. A box increases in value when the player shoots a shiny green wall, pillar or box (or whatever else). Every time you shoot the box resets back to 1 point. Therefore, the key to the game is to move to the best positions on each map and the art of ricochet. The game begins easily enough but becomes quite difficult in later levels. This is because the game stops holding your hand at the conclusion of the easy levels and expects you to have learned the key mechanics. Skilled players will be able to move and shoot accurately throughout each level. They will also be able to utilize and develop wall-climbing and platform skills. It is safe to suggest that if you ever enjoyed bunny hopping games you will likely find yourself at home. There are a couple of specific achievements tied to the tutorial. One of which is easy to obtain on the second level (do not shoot and use the blocks as stepping stones). The one on the third stage I recommend returning to after you have some experience.
A Note on VR
In the creation of the game the developers made some quirky design decisions that have impacted the game negatively. These include making the movement of the game set to keyboard/controller control. The other is the fact that the controls don't align with the way that you may be facing. As a result, some players have complained of VR disorientation and sickness.
Presentation
I'm a fan of the way in which the game is presented. Even without VR the game's menu system and other things are established in VR mode. The color palette is relatively basic though it is industrial-tech in design and implementation. The sound is arguably the most disappointing component of the game. It's very basic and I had to cycle through the menu in order to get the soundtrack to start playing. It then proceeded to stop multiple times over the course of my playtime. Given the fact that the game is played within empty arenas with only you and the boxes the low sound design makes the game feel emptier than it should.
Is it Steamified?
Yes. The game has Steam trading cards as well as achievements.
Verdict
Kumoon: Ballistic Physics Puzzle is a very solid game with a few non-fatal flaws. I can claim that the game has taught and reinforced a few skills that have disappeared from my gaming arsenal. People who like action and physics based puzzle games will find quite a lot to like about the game. At just US$4.99 you're looking at a pretty solid title at a not so expensive price point. This is a VR review! Even on ultra low setting with 90 frames the game make you feel sick after seconds. Also the robot looses the tracking and then you move in a different location as where you are looking. Standing is even worse than sitting. If they dont fix it i will play it without VR instead.
I love Kumoon : Ballistic Physics Puzzle.
Peli toimii mainiosti VR tilassa ja haastetta riittää sopivasti joka tasolle. Kumoon hahmo on erittäin onnistunut, samoin pehmeä äänimaailma. Suosittelen erityisesti VR tilassa pelattavaksi.
