Please follow United Critics for quality reviews
Katana Dragon Review

Overview

In Katana Dragon, you control one of the ninjas, Shin or Nobi, on their first adventure to restore the land of Sogen against the elder gods. It features hack-n-slash combat against the fabled Gokais and several puzzles to resolve along the forest. Exploring the land yields dragon gems to change your stats, cursed seals that heavily modify stats, and, as you progress with the story, more ninja powers. A local co-op mode is also available.

Story

A thousand years ago, a dragon razed the land with his fire, consuming almost all the life in the prosperous, peaceful land. Five monks defeated and captured the dragon in a cage made out of pure Ki energy. But the dragon broke free one day. A weaponsmith managed to create a powerful sword that they said cut through rock like it was paper and trusted the blade to a legendary champion. The blade thrust into the dragon with ease, releasing dark energy that killed its wielder, but it got stuck in the belly of the beast ever since. Thus became the legend of… Katana Dragon. On present day, trainees ninjas Shin and Nobi are assigned an actual mission: find out what happened to the inhabitants of the land, and those answers can be found deep in the heart of the forest’s ruins…

Gameplay

You start the adventure by selecting which character to play; it doesn’t matter a lot, as they have the same lines of dialogue. Later in the game you can change characters or enable local co-op mode. Your abilities include attacking as real fast as you can smash the left click within melee range. Dashing at the last second before an enemy attacks grants time for a bullet. Further in the game you learn Shadow Clone that taunts gokais and mimics your attacks. Dashing and using any power costs Ki, which can be recharged faster by meditating or by drinking from your flask, which also restores health. All these skills will be used both in combat and solving puzzles, particularly dashing through gaps and creating a shadow that activates pressure plates. Gokais are a varied lot and capable of fighting against you. If you played Sengodai, you’ll meet familiar gokais along the way. They attack with melee or ranged projectiles; some can be deflected with your sword. It is very difficult to dodge an attack to trigger bullet time, as the window is very, very small. A defeated foe drops dokais, experience, and sometimes food that will restore health. Enemies seem to scale according to your level, increasing their stats. Leveling up increases your stats by 5% of your base ones. The real upgrade comes from dragon gems; these will increase two stats, but only three can be equipped at a time. There is no limit in obtaining dragon gems; they can be acquired from gokais or treasure chests scattered across the land. Caves and dungeons are a main source for treasures; the entrance to those will show if you opened every single chest. Outfits can be obtained exclusively from gauntlets (waves of gokais) found in wells. Puzzles are a big lot; dashing through gaps is the most common. Wooden boxes can be picked up and thrown to places, or to make bridges, you can dash with them. Some of those puzzles resulted in confusion at first because I had no idea what to do or where to go. Exploring the map and wandering aimlessly is what worked until I got a bearing of my surroundings. There is no hand-holding or textual explanation, which might trouble new players. Moving black boxes is a bit slower, and they respond with some lag to my inputs. To say there are a lot of builds to make is an understatement; there’s barely a lot to equip besides common gems, with the rare ones left by the end game. I have only found one cursed seal; whether they unlock as you progress the story or in difficult dungeons, I’m not sure. There is a final boss deeper in the forest that will end the first chapter; I hope to reach it one day soon.

Bugs Found

• Playing in window mode, choosing to maximize the screen, when you check the map in the pause menu, the game resizes to the original resolution.

Audio & Graphics

Using the same voxel graphic style from Sengodai is the highlight of the game. The foliage reacts to any object and our attacks. The physics from objects are a bit clunky, but they are far from bad. Its music is what I enjoyed the most, capturing the land in its fullest on every location, house, or dungeon. I only wish for my enemies an indicator when they’re attacking with an attack dodgable to trigger bullet time, as it is currently difficult to tell. As performance goes, I disabled every graphic filter, and the game looked good and smooth still. There were areas with a lot of fire particles where framerates dropped considerably, though.

Pros & Cons

- Pros
Classic Zelda-like adventure.
Beautifully crafted land with good graphics.
Good and hilarious dialogue.

- Cons
Combat could use a bit of improvement to use more bullet time.
Puzzles are slow and tedious to do, some without logic or somewhat complex.

Rating: 7/10 Sensei is wise; do as he says and listen closely. Then do the opposite and slash everything in your path. For full review head over to our website

Katana Dragon is a charming voxel-action RPG from Spanish indie developer Tsunoa Games, now in Early Access. Control Shin and Nobi, twin ninja siblings on a quest to save the cursed world of Sogen. The Early Access build includes a polished prologue, the first full dungeon, six unique ninja skills, diverse biomes, and a challenge arena . The core loop revolves around dragon gem upgrades, cursed seal crafting, and gear customization—creating depth beneath the fast-paced combat. Controls feel tight and responsive, supported by a UI that remains intuitive even during quick movement and battle sequences. Visually, the game stands out with its handcrafted voxel art—MagicaVoxel brings a nostalgic yet fresh aesthetic. Hidden in the design are playful nods to Spanish culture, such as paella, flamenco fans, and Don Quixote-style NPCs . With fully-fledged Linux and Steam Deck support, Katana Dragon offers an engaging, retro-inspired action-RPG experience with modern polish.
Katana Dragon is an action, adventure and dungeon exploration RPG with hack and slash combat and puzzle elements. It is presented very nicely with an oriental atmosphere enhanced by a great oriental soundtrack and visually pleasing voxel graphics. The elephant in the room is that this is only Part One of the series and I could not find out for sure what the business model is for part two. It could be a paid DLC or it could be free to owners of part one. It would be nice to know because it is difficult to form an opinion on the game without this information so I would kindly invite the devs to comment with their future plans for this title :) I've played enough of the game to get a good feel of the mechanics and it is an enjoyable game to play with some mildly challenging combat and puzzle elements. Combat is hack and slash in nature with a dash and the ability to upgrade your weapon and stats with dragon gems and cursed seals. You have three slots for both and can upgrade your attack, defence, ki, and health by inserting dragon gems. They come in different guises and power so choose the ones which fit your play style. Cursed seals come with a positive aspect but also a negative one. Puzzle elements involve navigating the landscape, as often chests and pathways can involve solving problems like bridging gaps with chests or dashing from island to island over water. There are also dungeons and wells to explore with puzzles involving levers, pressure pads, spikes, and defeating enemies to open gates. Your prize is usually a rare object, gem, or a different piece of clothing you can change into. They're not overly difficult but you will certainly die, but death is quite forgiving and you are respawned close to where you perished. I found the map to be a little pointless because as far as I could tell it doesn't actually show you your current position, apart from a general "you are in this section", so it made it challenging to navigate to points of interest. Save points are designated by shrines which do come along quite often but you won't be able to save your game ad hoc. I am at a point now where I am stuck on a puzzle to open a main gate to the next section which involves selecting six stones in the right order. Even though there is a clue which names three of them, it's actually not clear what the pictures on the stones are representing so that has got me bamboozled. You can switch between the two characters but as of yet I am not sure why you would want to. I suppose you can build up different sets of attributes and later I believe there are new skills to learn, so perhaps that would come into play then, but at its current state I just kept with the one character.
🍳Final Thoughts🍳

Putting aside the business model confusion Katana Dragon is an enjoyable game with nice visuals, sound, and decent puzzle and combat elements. It has all the ingredients for a nice game. I'm not a big fan of having games in different parts so that might put you off but if it doesn't you will find an entertaining game. A veces pulso start y aparece y desaparece.
I s pár bugy a ovládacími křečemi má velké srdce, špetku humoru a otevřenou náruč pro všechny, kteří chtějí zažít roztomilý kus indie magie. Such a cute game, really well made! Firstly, the graphics are phenomenal! Amazing job, the game feels well put together and has great controls. The combat is pretty basic, and the puzzles are quite easy, but this is still amazing, I hope this can get more attention. Bravo!
An exciting action-adventure with fun combat and classic puzzle-filled dungeons, though it lacks an early-access label or a better title, as it’s incomplete, with only one chapter, and not a full game. Like so many times before, the game takes place in a world that was once peaceful, until the appearance of an evil dragon that threatens everything. People were strong back then, and with the help of monks they were able to contain the dragon, but only for one thousand years. The second time, the dragon was destroyed using a weapon forged from its former prison. Legend says that the weapon’s shards were scattered all over the world, which excites two young ninja novices to explore a nearby cave. Inside, they find something unusual and hear a strange noise. Not paying much attention to it, they leave the cave and are shocked to discover that everyone else has been turned into a ghost. You get to choose which of the two ninjas you want to play as, but the difference is limited to name and gender, as both play exactly the same. The controls include basic movement, attacking, and a dash. The dash is not only used to escape enemies, but also to cross chasms and avoid ground hazards. There is also a slow motion effect when you dash at the right moment against an enemy attack, but it feels random and I never fully understood how to trigger it reliably. Dashing consumes ki, which slowly regenerates over time, or more quickly if you use meditation. Meditation leaves you vulnerable, so it is best used when you are far from danger, but it activates quickly enough that you can still recover some ki in risky situations. More importantly, ki is also used to heal yourself using a bottle with unlimited uses. While the heal has a long cooldown, you can dodge enemies and wait until it becomes available again. This makes battles longer, but at least it keeps you alive. After receiving your mission from your sensei, you head out into a linear world. The ninja you did not choose stays at home, and you can switch between the two at any time by talking to them. As is common in action adventure games, your first enemies are bushes and pots, which can also be picked up and thrown. They often contain coins or quick healing items, though coins can be completely ignored for reason explained at the end. The voxel graphics make the world colorful and visually appealing, but they come with a small drawback. Points of interest are not marked in any way. You will not know that something can be examined or used until you get very close and a button prompt appears. Even then, interaction can be frustrating, because if you are not standing in exactly the right spot and facing the object directly, your character will shake their head even though the prompt is visible. While the outdoor areas mainly consist of paths connecting different locations, the main highlights are the dungeons. Fans of the genre will know what to expect. These are mostly linear stages filled with puzzles involving blocks, levers, platforms, and abilities you learn along the way. These include skills like creating a shadow clone to place on pressure switches, or throwing a shuriken to activate distant mechanisms. Naturally, there are also enemies to defeat and chests to open. Chests act as the game’s main collectibles. You can see how many chests are in each dungeon, and the world map lets you quickly check which dungeons still contain undiscovered ones. Aside from this, the map is not very useful, as it only shows general areas and not detailed layout. Some dungeons display a recommended level, since you may encounter areas that are too difficult when first discovered. Even if you enter one too early and die, you can continue from the last room fully healed and without losing any progress. However, to properly save the game, you must visit shrines. Unfortunately, chests are also scattered throughout the overworld, but the map does not show how many there are. Finding them requires careful observation of the environment, such as noticing suspicious chasms, stones in the water, or patches of ground that hint at placing a crate. These chests mostly contain outfits and hats, which are purely cosmetic and not essential, but this is still disappointing for completionists. Enemies can be dangerous, especially when facing several at once, as your health drops quickly. Some rush toward you, while others attack from a distance with projectiles that can be knocked away. When defeated, enemies may drop coins or food for quick healing, and they always drop experience orbs. Collect enough orbs and you will level up, increasing your stats. Experience is never lost because the orbs automatically fly toward you, but items do not behave the same way. If an enemy is knocked into a pit, water, or a wall, any item drops will be lost. Enemies respawn when you change locations, but grinding is neither required nor encouraged. The number of orbs needed to level up increases significantly each time, and low-level enemies give very little experience. It is more efficient to fight enemies closer to your own level. Enemy variety is poor. There are only ten enemy types, which scale in level and sometimes size to indicate elite versions. Most can be defeated through simple button mashing, except for flying enemies. These are particularly annoying because you cannot hit them until they move closer, while they can attack you freely from a distance. Since there is no skill tree, customization comes from gems and seals. Gems have a chance to drop from defeated enemies and can appear in different qualities, with higher quality gems providing stronger bonuses. You can equip up to three gems in your weapon, each boosting one of the four core stats: health, ki, attack, or defense. Seals work in a similar way and are also equipped in three slots, but they provide more specialized bonuses such as health regeneration, along with a negative effect. However, after spending around two to three hours in the game, you may notice that no additional seals drop beyond the one you receive at the start. An entire menu dedicated to seals remains empty. Combined with the fact that coins have no real use, it starts to feel like something is missing. This suspicion is confirmed once you complete the first major dungeon and defeat its boss. At that point, the game simply ends, and the credits reveal that this is only the first chapter. Because there is no chapter one label and no early access warning, it is easy to assume you are buying a complete game. The experience itself is excellent, and since the main wind dungeon takes a long time to finish, the full game could end up being several times longer, but the game needs a clear tag to indicate this.
