Even today in the year 2026, Just Cause 3 has been, and will always, be the best GTA-inspired chaos game of gaming history.
*Just Cause 3* is the kind of game that does not need a deep story to be fun. It knows exactly what kind of chaos it wants to give you, and when it works, it is incredibly entertaining. The story is very simple. Rico Rodriguez returns to Medici, his homeland, to help overthrow General Di Ravello, a dictator who controls the islands through fear, military power and Bavarium. To be honest, the plot is not the reason I like this game. Di Ravello is not a very complex villain, and the rebellion story is pretty straightforward. But somehow, that fits the game. Rico is not here for quiet drama. He is here to turn an entire military regime into fireworks. Medici is a big reason why the game feels good. The islands are sunny, colorful and beautiful, with mountains, villages, military bases, beaches and blue water everywhere. It is almost funny how pretty the world looks while you are blowing half of it up. One moment you are gliding peacefully over the sea with the wingsuit, and the next moment you are crashing into a fuel tank, pulling down a statue, or sending enemy vehicles flying off a cliff. The movement is easily the best part. The grappling hook, parachute and wingsuit make Rico feel like a superhero with no respect for physics. Just moving across the map is fun. I can spend a long time doing nothing important, just launching myself into the air, gliding between mountains, grappling onto cars, jumping onto helicopters and finding stupid ways to travel. A lot of open-world games make travel feel like empty distance, but in *Just Cause 3*, movement itself is the game. The destruction is also extremely satisfying. Liberating towns and bases can get repetitive, but the act of doing it rarely stops being fun. There is something very childish, in a good way, about seeing red explosive objects everywhere and thinking, “Yes, all of this has to go.” Radar dishes, fuel tanks, propaganda speakers, statues, generators — everything becomes a toy. Sometimes I tried to make a clean plan, but usually the whole place turned into smoke, fire, helicopters, tanks and screaming enemies within one minute. Rico himself is not a very emotional character, but I still like him. He has that relaxed action-hero confidence, like he knows everything will explode and he is completely fine with it. His relationship with Mario and the rebels gives the game a little warmth, even if the writing is not very deep. The game is at its best when it treats Rico like a symbol of absurd freedom rather than a serious revolutionary hero. Of course, the game has problems. The missions are not always memorable, the story is thin, and the liberation structure can become repetitive after many hours. Some challenges feel more annoying than fun, especially when they lock useful upgrades behind them. There are moments when the game slows down and asks you to do something careful, but that is not really what *Just Cause 3* is good at. Still, I really enjoy this game because its best moments are so strong. It is pure open-world chaos. It gives you a beautiful island, a grappling hook, a wingsuit, endless explosives and asks you to create your own action movie. It may not be deep, but it is fun in a very direct and memorable way. When I think of *Just Cause 3*, I think of Rico flying over Medici, pulling himself through the sky, explosions lighting up behind him, and the whole island looking like one giant playground waiting to be destroyed.
