A far cry from what I consider a finished game
七月 - July… It has pretty decent visuals, and reSet7, the developer, knows how to write some banger boss-fight soundtrack. However, playing it was not a fun experience. Everything starts out okay, but as you dive deeper into the game, you’ll find several issues that'll quickly turn that smile upside down.
Now, about the game
In a nutshell, the reasons I’m not particularly fond of 七月 - July are these:

Next to no clue to what is going on with the narrative
Low audio configuration with no way to reconfigure
Unpolished controls resulting in a godawful gameplay experience
English translation is messed up, along with typos here and there
It feels like the game was designed to screw you over

It began with a simple “question: do you like flowers?”
You play as a Nameless sailing to a mysterious land. As you set foot on the land, you’ll find yourself in the presence of a cryptic person. He wants to know only one thing from you; whether you like flowers or not. Then he starts explaining the gameplay mechanics, and that’s it – I’m not joking. Armed with a cryptic question, you embark on a quest to cleanse the horrors spread throughout the land. As you progress, you’ll find tombstones that supposedly provide some clues regarding your predicament – they don’t. The second time you meet the cryptic person, he talks about a sacred tree. Now, we’re onto something here! We got flowers, monsters, and magic trees. Instead of providing clarity, 七月 - July does the opposite and keeps dropping confusing info with no intention of clarifying the previous ones, and that’s a big no-no from me. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2814289625
I’m not sure what I’m playing anymore, Metroidvania or Pinball
Oh boy, now for the juiciest part, the gameplay. If you’re familiar with the term Metroidvania, then you might have a general idea of how the game will play out. 七月 - July presents itself as a two-dimensional action-adventure game that features exploration and challenging bosses to fight. Now, Imagine a Metroidvania minus its currency, collectibles, lore, or upgrading options; that is 七月 - July. I abhor the controls in general. Its button placement is so awkward, that it ramps up the difficulty. It’s no exaggeration to say that the hardest thing in the game was getting used to the controls – which I am still not! The issue with controls could've been solved easily by giving us a simple keybinding option, which the game doesn’t have. 七月 - July has two defensive options: parry and dodge. While parrying provides some damage reduction and at times nullification, dodging has little to no use at all. It doesn’t have any I-frame that would allow players to dodge incoming attacks. Gameplay boils down to a perfect run or bust. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2815544113 Next to the controls’ issue, what got under my skin was the overly exaggerated knockbacks. You get knockback from attacking, blocking, having direct contact with enemies, and shockwaves. In addition, 七月 - July doesn’t have any recovery frame, which means you could get flung around after taking one damage after another if you happen to be in a horrible position. The GIF shows one of the tamer ones, I’ve been in a situation where I was bounced to death by three mobs. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2815544039
The inaudible soundtrack made the game feel lifeless
七月 - July has some pretty sick soundtrack; however, the basic volume configuration was so low that you could mistake it for having none at all. The one time you could appreciate the soundtrack is during boss fights, as the developer probably thought that was the only time it should be discernible – they cranked the volume up during boss fights. “If the volume was so low, just change the configuration”; therein lies the second problem. 七月 - July doesn’t have any volume configuration option. Because of that, you are stuck with exploring a close-to-silent world where the only audible sound is the sound of slashing along with your character screaming “ha!” at the top of her lungs. Lastly, 七月 - July could’ve been better if they put more effort into the sound effects. For example, they could’ve added a bit of rustling sound when the character walks through a grassy plain or tapping sounds on rocky surfaces. These tiny details go a long way and are something I applaud if done right.
Overall
I gave 七月 - July the benefit of the doubt that it would somehow get better – it didn’t. Sure, the boss fights had some pretty good soundtrack, and it felt exhilarating when I somehow managed to beat the boss. BUT! getting to that point requires a great deal of luck and causes frustration that I couldn’t imagine I would feel from playing a game. If the developer team could at least fix the controls, maybe 七月 - July would be less aggravating to play. At its current state, it feels like the whole premise is to ruin your day. Until then, I recommend against getting this one; The potential is there, but the developer needs to put extra effort to realize it.

Challenging but enjoyable. Hope it would have key re-bindings. [2DACT]
For other game reviews, please follow us at What The Game?
July is a 2D platformer built on the Unity engine. It appears to have been developed by an Asian developer/studio and the game is billed as a horizontal version of Castlevania. July features a large number of levels and uses fairly well made graphic and effects. Unfortunately, the developer(s) of July threw common convention out the windows and ignored functions that most players take for granted. As such, July maybe be difficult to play for some people without configuring or disabling joysticks and similar analog controllers to make July work. July supports several languages; however, the translations are likely direct for all language other than the source language of the developers. For example, most players would expect "Quit" or "Exit" to leave the game; in July this is called "Out". "Configuration" or "Options" is called "set". Speaking of options, there really aren't any. The language can be set, and there are a few instructional blurbs that can be displayed. There are no graphics or sound options. None of the controls can be remapped and this is a shame because it makes the game unplayable for left-handed players. If any attached joystick, throttle, or other controller on the computer has an axis move, the game will begin using it, whether the player likes it or not. The background music cannot be disabled or have its volume changed. As a platformer, July has a reasonably smooth feel to the movement, but jumping is somewhat awkward to get used to. The player can 'stick' to walls and leap upward from a jump, sort of a double leap. There are melee combat swinging and defensive controls. As there are no difficulty options, the player is thrown into a very difficult fight and maneuver level right off the bat that requires killing 3 enemies and killing or bypassing an enemy in a sort of vertical tunnel opening. Death comes quickly; the level can be restarted, but it's not clear how far progress is saved. After trying and dying 12-15 times on the opening level, most players are likely to give up, exit the game, and uninstall it. July appears to have some semblance of a story, the player is a female, there is mention of a God Tree and some strange questions to the player and whether or not they like flowers? What makes it doubly strange is that there is no obvious way to answer the question, meaning something simple like "select yes or no and hit the enter key". Instead, a couple of menu options appear, but no mention of how to select either one and confirm it. It's simply bizarre that the developer would think that this is obvious. July has a very nice look and feel, but it is a hassle to play and cut-throat difficult out of the box. Perhaps with some effort put into key mapping options, rethinking the user interface, and graphics/sound controls, July might be worth playing through. As it stands, July appears to be a game that the developer put a lot of time and effort in, but they got too good playing while testing and forgot all about what a new user's experience will be. July is not recommended in its current state.
