If you like action games and puzzle games, I recommend this game. I like this game's fighting system. I recommend using a gamepad. It was very fun to attack zombies with sticks. Each level has a new system that makes the game enjoyable. Personally, it was very fun to get rid of zombies by dropping them off the cliff instead of killing them one by one. Playtime is reasonable for the price. If you're interested in speed runs, try the challenge mode. Speedruns change the game completely.
This is a super simple, super short game that just gets right to the point, you kill zombies and collect keys. Controls are a twin-stick-brawler style (like a twin-stick-shooter but there's no guns, only punches and street signs for melee) Be aware the game is clearly designed for a controller, there is no mouse support at all so if you're using a keyboard you'll need to make do with IJKL for directional attacks and the standard WASD for movement. There's really not much to say, what you see in the screenshots on the store is the majority of the game. It's about 30 minutes long (maybe 60 if you die a few times while learning) so it's over nearly as quickly as you begin. You just show up, no attempt at story is given and you just beat up a few zombies, collect a few keys and… the end. It's functional, it's easy to play, it's short and it's cheap. If that's all you ask for in a game then it's a serviceable way to kill some time. Here's a gameplay sample if you need to see more for yourself: https://youtu.be/zDdxrhW60xQ --- Bottom line: The name of the game pretty much says it all, there's zombies, there's keys. Kill the zombies, collect the keys. --- While you are here, would you consider following my curator page? Want to read all of my reviews and not just the curated ones? --- Game received free as curator.
For other game reviews, please follow us at What The Game?
Zombies and Keys is as direct as you would expect from the title. Only 2 things truly matter here, the keys you need to find and pick up to get to the end of the level and the zombies, the obstacles who are preventing that, not purposefully but they just want that brain of yours regardless of what you want to achieve. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2848542115
It’s Just That Easy
You’re a “strongman” in a zombie apocalypse, all you have are your fists, and street signs once a while and you need to find keys, to make your way through the end of the level. Once in a while you need to find gas canisters, or key cards or turn on switches to open up the way in order to progress through the level. The objectives through the different levels of the game are as simple as that. Even though you’re a strongman, the zombies can still overwhelm you in numbers and even force you into a corner which could be the end of you.
Smooth
Graphically Zombies and Keys exudes in polish in its simplicity. Characters and environments in the game have a basic one or two colour to them, without any or much details on them which can be a detriment but is not the case here. Characters in the game move fluidly. Every punch you throw that lands or not translates well visually and auditory. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2848541127
There’s a Will There’s a Way
Levels have a variation to them, some with their own obstacles and simple puzzles to “solve” in which is the best way to trim down the zombie numbers. Items and health are scattered and at times hidden within the levels are fair and generous, making progression in the game not much of a challenge especially early on. However it is still not a walk in the park as you only have 3 lives, losing all 3 will result in having to redo the level from the start.
Keeping it Simple
This game is an excellent example of keeping it simple from top to bottom and excelling in executing it. Visually it doesn’t need all the unnecessary details to make it a good looking game as its simplicity and how clean things are makes it a good looking game in its own style. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2848542239
Final Thoughts
Zombies and Keys certainly showed that you don’t need high fidelity graphics or multiple gameplay mechanics or a 15 hour campaign to make a game enjoyable. Just come up with an idea, look and gameplay that is accessible enough and not complicated and polish well enough to make it a gem in its own way.
t's a thrilling game that reminds me of let it die, which I enjoyed playing. It's a fun game that goes well with graphic taste and level of game.
Pretty fun game with simple objectives. Levels get progressively complicated, with more enemies and complex mechanics that rely on the player to figure it out. The Challenge Mode adds another layer of replayability, with a "permadeath" type of gameplay that does indeed create a difficult challenge! Personally, I also enjoyed the ambience and style a lot. The simplicity graphics wise really holds up with the world built with it. Although there's not a defined story, you can tell what's happened around you and it reminds me of other good apocalyptic stories. Overall its a game with lots of potential, all the new levels added after the demo added way more complexity and I'm interested to see where it goes next. If you enjoy simple action-puzzle games, this one is worth a grab!
