I want to be clear upfront that I played the game on the easiest difficulty, so take that as you will. But, I had a good time with this game. The clear wins are the art direction, the story, and the music, I think those are things that most people will agree with. Some things that you may like or dislike, are the game balancing, difficulty, and the nature of the game. Ultimately IXION is about reaching a destination, it's not a sandbox city builder to craft a utopia. It's a space station with a limited lifespan, and everything you do in the game is about making it last while overcoming various obstacles. This means things can and will frequently go wrong, you will get punished for some choices, and a lot of the game is about working around negative events rather than preventing them altogether like you might in other city builders. Personally I do wish there was a sandbox mode, I would love to be able to continually explore space and colonize worlds sort of like a more zoomed in Stellaris. But I think having an ultimate goal in a city builder isn't a bad thing, and it's something that a lot of other games fail to implement. In terms of difficulty, keeping in mind I played it on the easiest setting, I would say that I don't particularly want to try it on harder difficulties, but if you're into that kind of thing you will probably find the game quite rewarding. The game pushes you to progress and punishes you for taking your time though, which I really didn't appreciate, but I kind of get it since if you had infinite time it also nullifies a lot of threats. In summary, I do recommend this game, it's different and it will stress you out a little bit, but the journey is worth it.
If you like balancing resources and dying a lot, this game is for you!
Didn't expect the story to be this good. 9/10 game!
finalmente IXION ha lingua italiana, e simulazione di colonia sono pò difficile ma per sopravivere. non è facile missione per me.
English : Well, I thought I was about to play yet another city-building and management game, but I ended up completely captivated. Some will say, quite rightly, that Ixion is Frostpunk in space. Personally, the game that immediately came to mind was Homeworld. Much like Homeworld, Ixion is a true science-fiction novel brought to life, an unforgettable space odyssey. And the music... my God, what a masterpiece. Homeworld fans will undoubtedly recognize that same feeling of solitude and wonder in the face of the vastness of space. This is a game with a soul, a true identity. We'll still be remembering it twenty years from now. A masterpiece.
As others may have said, "Frostpunk in space". It's definitely harder at first, and more demanding earlier. That chapter 2 difficulty spike nearly killed this game for me (this is coming from someone who beat Frostpunk on survivor mode) but once you get over it, the difficulty and pacing feels much more manageable. This provided that addictive "constantly on the edge of survival, but constantly researching, becoming more efficient, and becoming better" gameplay loop that the first FP did very well. Story, music, and presentation are all quite good as well.
This one's really good. Scratched my Frostpunk and Satisfactory itch in the same way. I like the writing and the events are unique and satisfying. The story is neat too, very enjoyable for your local space autist. Good music too. The only way I could describe it is if Frostpunk 1 just kept going instead of having fixed scenarios with end points. Exactly what I wanted out of the first game. Just keep building and building and building. I must've rebuilt my ship fully from the ground up 5 or 6 times throughout the game until finally being satisfied with my layouts. New technology meant new reasons to rebuild. Final two acts I didn't even do anything cause I was just stockpiled up, which was fine with me 30 hours in. That's not to say it doesn't have flaws, ohboy. Some of the mission objectives are very poorly thought out, like having to de-thaw 2,000 crew members before you can continue, starting when you receive the mission. This leads to some people having already de-thawed 2000 members and now they're just ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Having to train Colonists to your exact unemployed amount, and if your unemployed amount increases, you now have to seperately train that singular new colonist, but before he's finished, two more new unemployed show up. Now you have to train those two, too. I also didn't learn core mechanics of the game till act 2, act 3, and even on act 4. The tutorial doesn't cover the keybinds, ie: Tab in build mode, or alt in exterior view. Also had to search up to learn the research trees have secondary trees inside them. The difficulty can be fully customized which I immensely respect. I wouldn't've finished this game otherwise. Turned off: Vohle jump depretion, permanent hull drain Opened sectors depletion, permanent hull drain Cryopod build-up penalty Homesickness penalty Deaths penalty Accidents frequency halved. I found this to be a fun setup, I didn't care for the stability mechanic at all. Most stability debuffs are permanent, and most positive ones are a temporary +10%. You get penalized for staying in a sector too long, for your crew who died 5 years ago, and many more dumb things I just didn't wanna engage with. Why is recycling -1 stability, I get you could say it's stinky, but recycling is cool and good and free resources.
A fun, but challenging, city builder in space with an interesting story. Save often!
