It's You: A Breakup Story

I paid $5 to be emotionally abused by an imaginary guy. And it was so realistic I had to pause once in the middle and take a breath. I wish it was longer but at the same time I'm glad it's over, which is also how the poor protagonist must feel.

Even though I don't "recommend" this game with the yes/no feature, then hear me out; It is definitely a great way to show, how mentally and verbally abusive relationships are and how to handle it. And I do think that it is definitely important to educate people about this issue, and in that way I do recommend this little game. However very quickly it became more of a tic-tac-toe game while Josh (the abusive boyfriend) calls you "♥♥♥♥♥" in your ears... And that is why as a game itself, I cannot recommend it. I think it is a great way to attempt to put more attention to the topic of abusive relationships, but then again, there is 1 playthrough and then you've seen and heard it all and then it returns to re-loop the dialogue. Something I would really like to see in this though, is some more perspectives. Like some more storylines. Maybe some other abusive-relationships-stories that you can play out, if that makes sense. Maybe a storyline where you play as a guy who gets abused from his girlfriend, etc. Otherwise then it's a maximum of at most 30 minutes of gameplay before it gets repetitive to listen to. I will give it 10/10 for bringing the issue to the top, but not more than 3/10 for the actual (very limited) gameplay and only one singular storyline.

10/10 would toss Josh in the metaphorical dumpster again. Hell, I'd happily toss him in the literal dumpster.

This is like a 30 minute game, I even tried to find if choices really matted but they don't except just deciding to hang up and block the boyfriend. But really there's only a beginning of a few red flags of abusiveness if you say certain things. Even then it's not obvious abuse until you break up with him and he respnds by bad talking you really bad on social media. I don't see it worth the 5 dollars I paid, and it doesn't help it didn't hit anywhere near the hype I had from the kickstart I got a part of.

The way Josh talks, it sounded exactly like my toxic ex through a different voice. It was incredibly satisfying and cathartic to just keep hanging up on him.

7/10 Although the game felt like it ended a little abruptly for me and began to repeat itself towards the end of my time with it, upon reflection I found that I appreciated much of what it had to say about relationships. I felt that Josh's voice actor did a wonderful job in portraying a certain type of partner. Though Josh may not be physically abusive, his pompous demeanor and demeaning comments promise to slowly erode the self-worth of Carlee. In addition, his reference to her time seeing a counselor pathologizes her behavior. Ending a relationship with such a person requires a dogged assertiveness, and the game reflects this well. Another challenge, however, is withstanding the apology and appeal that inevitably will follow. The game doesn't explore it extensively, but does allude to the way a private conflict can escalate into a public debacle with the inclusion of social media, especially with a vindictive partner.

10/10, would block Josh again.

Josh is a jerk, so lets end this relationship once and for all! A short experience that peers into the world of manipulative relationships. I started playing this thinking "I'll be that guy that listens to EVERYTHING and gets through everything" but honestly? 30 minutes in and Josh is just. so. damn. annoying. He's just... so easy to hate. And hate with passion. I love it. You really can answer yeah/okay/same/hmm so many times in a row before you just simply... cannot. The browser has a tab for music and honestly? Great idea, same with Tweeter, and especially with Tractor Dad: Civil War. They definitely help pass the time when you're just trying to hear the guy out... and he talks so much... too much even. To the point where that "block" button just looks too good to be true. An hour in I pressed that button with joy, satisfaction. I truly love this game, it was worth every cent.

This game is going to be an intense ride for some people, especially if you've ever had an emotionally abusive partner. But it's very well done, and tragically realistic. Josh's voice actor is also to be commended - his talent has to carry the whole experience, and he does a stellar job at being a really horrible human being. It's You is a great example of the kind of empathy experiences video games can provide, and well worth your time if you're up for it.
