About
Iron Roads is a top-down 2D train management game in which you lay tracks, buy trains, and set their routes until you have an efficient network carrying passengers and cargo between your towns and factories.
With board game-inspired mechanics such as resource tokens, geographically-induced space constraints, and innovative track order systems, Iron Roads will appeal to players who relish the more cerebral, optimisation elements of train simulation games, as opposed to more realistic business sim/tycoon-type games.
Endless mode: Start with just a couple of randomly-generated towns needing connection. If you serve them well, you are rewarded with R&D tokens that you can exchange for map expansions to add towns and systems. Start small, end devilishly complex!
Scenarios: Hand-crafted experiences with distinct narratives and gameplay features
Monthly challenges: Play time-bound challenges to compete for a spot on the high-score board
Minimalistic interface Well-suited for setting up sprawling and complex networks, while being approachable for new players
Manage your resources Earn resource tokens by growing towns or completing contracts. Use your tokens strategically to expand your network and keep your erudite animal passengers happy
Carry cargo Transport goods efficiently in interconnected production chains
Research Unlock new trains, technologies, and things to transport
Listen to the sound of your network Music in Iron Roads is a combination of notes generated from your trains and passengers, and authored melodies. The music you hear will be as unique as the layouts you build
Performance graphs The main goal of Iron Roads is to optimise your network, so you may wish to use the charts to analyse data relating to your finances and passengers
Build large, complex networks Or small-to-medium sized networks, if that's what floats your boat
We anticipate that we’ll be in Early Access for a couple of years, but are committed to providing regular updates based of feedback.
Our plan for each update is based on feedback from the community and the state of the game at that moment. So if there is something you'd especially like to see in Iron Roads, get in touch!

This is a very different 'train game' from what I was expecting... This game does very well at narrowing down the scope and getting rid of all the extra 'fluff', keeping just the interesting and relevant strategic aspects of building a train network. What I didn't expect is how often the rails themselves as a resource were a bottleneck - unlike power or concrete or <etc>, you can't just make more by moving cargo, you have to keep towns happy over time and let them grow, so it's a unique challenge to satisfy the passengers with the limited resources you start out with. In every other 'train game' that I'm used to, the rails themselves were almost free, extremely cheap and could be laid out en masse (e.g. just to reserve some space or plan some future expansion), so making the network ideal on the first attempt almost never happens, and you have to go back and rework old sections as demand increases gradually. Luckily this is made fairly easy with the decent controls and construction tools, but the one part I just don't currently like is that I have to worry about placing things before a town grows into some area that I had plans for, or under some existing rails that I needed to replace.
Highly recommended. A great TTD game. It gives a lot of pleasure from the very beginning and does not let go for a long time. It's easy to get a working network, but to perfect it and earn all the stars is a good challenge for the player. Suitable both for beginners in this genre and immersed players, despite the apparent simplicity. Despite the early access, the game is more than playable and there is already quite a lot of content.
In these days of complicated simulator games, this game is refreshingly simple and enjoyable. There is no rush to do anything for monetary progress. It's more like a puzzle just for basic fun. The devs are very responsive to any comments and suggestions, which is a very good thing. The game doesn't exactly appeal to me, in that it's more about solving a puzzle than building a railroad empire. But I DO recommend it for those who like this genre
I really like the approach of the game, however is frustrating struggling with trains and the routes and after 15 minutes trying to figure it out how to get multiple trains running in the same tracks with multiple routes, I just gave up. It’s promising, but needs to get better
Great game, easy to learn but hard to master play style. Has a cutesy 2d art style and can be replayed a lot without feeling the same and also has some challenges too. Yes its Early Access and has a few problems but nothing that has stopped me playing it and it will only get better as time goes on, the developer seems to be listening to feedback and bugs on discord which is great.
Concept is very nice. Tried multiple times, but the gameplay isn't quite there yet, although some things could be fixed with time. 1. Cites not stopping to grow and creating lots of unnecessary traffic. Deleting houses works only to a limited degree, and the tool itself is buggy. 2. Almost no way to keep the "on time" above the required level, no matter how many lines. 3. Getting stuck in the early game by running out of certain resources without a way to get them back. 4. Not a lot of options to guide train traffic in stations, either everything is blocked and therefore slow or trains collide into each other. While this is an early access game, at least some of these game breaking and frustrating issues could be fixed.
Interesting new gameplay mechanics I haven't seen before, a thoughtful resource system, and developers that respond to user feedback? Wow. It's not fully done yet (still in early access as I write this) but for the amount of love the devs have put in (and how much play time I've already got out of it even in EA), this really ought to cost >$1000 but it won't, and it'll be a steal no matter what they charge once released.

For clarity, I was heavily involved during playtesting, so my hours do not reflect actual playtime. This game is an absolute gem. It takes out some of the more complex parts of other tycoon games, and allows you to have quick, fun, 30-40 minute games. Perfect for winding down after work, or even quickly on your lunch break. Highly recommend. Best transport game I've played in years!
Really fun, simple but complex
