About
Iron Roads is a top-down 2D train management game in which you lay tracks, buy trains, and set their routes until you have an efficient network carrying passengers and cargo between your towns and factories.
With board game-inspired mechanics such as resource tokens, geographically-induced space constraints, and innovative track order systems, Iron Roads will appeal to players who relish the more cerebral, optimisation elements of train simulation games, as opposed to more realistic business sim/tycoon-type games.
Endless mode: Start with just a couple of randomly-generated towns needing connection. If you serve them well, you are rewarded with R&D tokens that you can exchange for map expansions to add towns and systems. Start small, end devilishly complex!
Scenarios: Hand-crafted experiences with distinct narratives and gameplay features
Monthly challenges: Play time-bound challenges to compete for a spot on the high-score board
Minimalistic interface Well-suited for setting up sprawling and complex networks, while being approachable for new players
Manage your resources Earn resource tokens by growing towns or completing contracts. Use your tokens strategically to expand your network and keep your erudite animal passengers happy
Carry cargo Transport goods efficiently in interconnected production chains
Research Unlock new trains, technologies, and things to transport
Listen to the sound of your network Music in Iron Roads is a combination of notes generated from your trains and passengers, and authored melodies. The music you hear will be as unique as the layouts you build
Performance graphs The main goal of Iron Roads is to optimise your network, so you may wish to use the charts to analyse data relating to your finances and passengers
Build large, complex networks Or small-to-medium sized networks, if that's what floats your boat

Reviews
All other reviews at the time I'm writing this are positive. How is this possible? This doesn't feel like an Early Access title. It feels like a prototype that you would show to a friend and ask if it feels like something you can make a game around. Couple of things: - icons look more like placeholders than actual items - the game is visually very simple yet runs like a dog on my (high end) PC - route management is 'global' from a list; again a reasonable implementation for a prototype, but not an actual game - there was no way (that I could find) to undo actions
Easiest recommendation ever. I'm 17 hours in to Early Access, I have seen very few bugs and it has been worth every penny so far. If you like train management and/or puzzle games this is for you. It's like Transport Tycoon/OpenTTD with more strategic restrictions on space and on the number of tracks and trains you can use. There are a few different modes currently. There's the Scenarios which lean more into the train management sandbox style of gameplay, and Challenges (monthly/weekly/etc) where there is a lot more of a focus on puzzle and strategy. If you're coming from OpenTTD then the track layout, signals, and train pathing basics are all there though without quite as much depth and micro-management possibilities as you might be used to. You can plan your train routes using stations and waypoints, you can set one way pathing on tracks, and there are 'Non-stop zones' to force trains to wait before they enter areas of the track or stations.
This game is a lot of fun and very relaxing! I first heard of this game in 2023 and was also a playtester since then. The game has evolved a lot over the years and the developers were always eager to listen to community feedback. I can absolutely recommend this if you are looking for a minimalist transport tycoon game!
Highly recommended. A great TTD game. It gives a lot of pleasure from the very beginning and does not let go for a long time. It's easy to get a working network, but to perfect it and earn all the stars is a good challenge for the player. Suitable both for beginners in this genre and immersed players, despite the apparent simplicity. Despite the early access, the game is more than playable and there is already quite a lot of content.
