I'd like to update this review as i play more and interact with the dev too, But from my first session of the game i can tell a lot of love was put into making it a very simple, beat em up that's easy to get into and even easier to enjoy to a good extent. Clearly influenced by 2d beat em ups and platformers of the 90s, Izzy has a really cute charm to it and while cheesy it's charming enough to not be grating or in any way a turn off. Also i couldn't resist mentioning the part where they're working on (or have worked on? dont know the status at the moment) a DREAMCAST version and that alone has my fullest blessing and excitement to because WHO makes dreamcast games anymore? Based game devs of course. :^)
For the longest time I thought this just looks corny. I am glad I gave this a try. Great artwork, fluid animations, comical interactions, challenging gameplay, smooth controls, clear sound effects, delightful music. That's just my opinion. I know you didn't ask me for it... (:
Intro
Even though this game was released some years ago, I only heard about it at the end of last year, when I saw someone playing it on the Dreamcast (yes, this game was made for the Dreamcast, as an Indie project). After that, I purchased this game here on Steam, and to be honest, it's probably my favourite game of 2026 so far (we're still halfway through the year, so...).
Graphics
The game itself is very charming, graphic wise, with an anime look with high definition models and backgrounds. The animations are also superb, where you can see several details like the hair animation of Izzy (the main character).
Gameplay
Gameplay itself is easy to pick up. The game is a mix of platforming with scrolling beat'em up. It also has a Metroidvania vibe, given that you'll be going back and forth plenty of times, to reach new parts of the levels as soon as you unlock new abilities. These abilities are tied to suits. Each suit has a specific set of skills, like gliding, wall-jumping, etc. The combat itself is basically a one-button action fighter. You do have a special button (like a Power button) which has a special action, like destroying stones. But these powers are also tied to the suits. The game has a decent number of levels, bosses, and shortcuts. To make the travelling between different levels (which are very far in the map), the game has some mirrors which are basically where you save your game and travel to the expected level. You do also have a HUB-like level, where you can heal yourself (by sleeping), play three mini-games and swap your suits.
Sound
The game doesn't have any spoken dialogues (everything is in text), but the sound effects are what is expected. What I think is excellent is the soundtrack. While some people might think that the music might be a bit repetitive, given that some tracks seem a bit identical, overall, I really enjoyed the music.
Difficulty
I do have some experience with this kind of game, so for me, the game was overall on the easy side. But for most people, I would say the difficulty won't be a problem at all. The only part where I had a bit of a challenge, was the final Boss fight. I had to retry it several times, until I was able to beat them. The duration of the game is also fair, with around 5-6 hours to beat it, and 7-9 hours if you want to get everything, including all the upgrades.
Story
This is the weakest link in the game. The story is almost non-existent. You do have some storyboards that show you what happens, but the story is basically something like this: [olist] [*]Izzy discovers an ancient treasure chest
in an abandoned temple
. [*]Upon opening the chest, she accidentally releases an evil genie
who plots to take over the world
. [*]To fix things, she must find some mysterious stones
to imprison the genie once again
. [/olist] You can talk to some secondary characters, while you do some side quests, but that's about it.
Verdict
Overall, I think the game itself is great. It's not perfect, and there were some things I didn't enjoy that much, like some bugs where I was trapped in a room and I had to restart from a previous level. What I really disliked was the ending. While I'm not going to spoil it for you, I think after a tough challenge, I was expecting more effort on the ending. It's like the developers were in a rush, and they just wanted you to finish the game. Even though the story is the weakest part of this game (like I mentioned previously), the game deserved more effort in the ending part. Don't let the story or ending take away from how great the game is.
Fun game and very satisfying feeling finding all the nook and crannies! Could use a difficulty boost for experienced players. Maybe a new game+ or hardcore mode? :)
Cute homage to the "Shantae" series plus small nods to other games, with good controls, good soundtrack, some boring bosses (save for our doppelganger and the final boss), a few annoying quirks (why do I have to go back to the hub town every time I want to change costumes?) and a nice "anything goes" quality similar to older games. Recommended if you like retro 1990s platformers.
Positive reviews are true, even on 4k big screen it looks and plays just awesome. Only con i can see is 60fps lock. Anyways i am putting this game in my personal list of most underrated games.
Pues... bugs no me he encontrado ninguno. "Foregone".
Version 1.0.19, chocolate mine [2], the leftmost passage (need Ninja Costume entry), there are boards under the two wooden boxes, and they can't return after jumping on the boards. This problem has not been solved in version 1.0.2.
I am big fan of platformer games. This is a easy one to learn and it takes a bit time to get good at it.
