Infinitum: I Wasted 6 Hours Trying To Understand This
★★☆☆☆ (6.6 hours played. Most of that was trying to get it to work properly. I'm an idiot.) I don't even know where to start with this one. I saw it on sale for like 3 bucks and thought "geometric puzzle game in space, could be interesting." It wasn't. At all. This is one of those games where you boot it up and immediately realize you made a mistake but you keep playing anyway because maybe, just maybe, it gets better. Spoiler: it doesn't.

First Impressions: What The Hell Am I Looking At
There's no tutorial. No intro. No text explaining what you're supposed to do. You just... start. You're a thing (I think?) moving around some white shapes on a black background. Okay fine, some games do the whole "figure it out yourself" thing and it works. This isn't one of those games. I spent the first 20 minutes just clicking randomly trying to understand if I was doing anything right. Turns out there isn't really a "right" way to play because there's barely a game here at all.

Performance: My Laptop Sounded Like A Jet Engine
For a game that looks like it was made in MS Paint, the performance is embarrassingly bad. My CPU usage hit 60% just floating around some geometric shapes. Sixty percent. For THIS. My RAM was sitting at 40% usage. I can run actual modern games with better optimization than whatever the hell is going on under the hood here. And the bugs? Oh man. The game froze on me twice. I had to alt-tab out and force close it. Sometimes the shapes wouldn't load properly and I'd just be staring at a black screen wondering if that was part of the "experience" or if the game broke again. It was usually the game breaking.

UI Is A Disaster
The GUI text is completely unreadable at certain resolutions. I'm running 1920x1080 and even then some of the menus looked weird and stretched. I saw another review from someone with 1360x768 and they said the text was literally impossible to read. How do you mess that up? It's 2024. Scalable UI has been standard for like a decade. There's also no way to search for anything or navigate menus properly. Everything feels clunky and unintuitive. I had to guess what half the buttons did because the text either didn't display or was too blurry to make out.

Music and Sound: There Is None
Zero soundtrack. Nothing. Just dead silence as you float around. Maybe that's intentional? Like some artsy "feel the void" thing? But honestly it just made the whole experience feel empty and unfinished. I ended up playing my own music in the background just so I didn't fall asleep. A game this minimal needs SOMETHING to keep you engaged and the silence just made it boring.

Gameplay: What Gameplay
I genuinely don't know what the point is. You move around shapes. Sometimes you go through a portal and the perspective changes. That's it. There's no objective, no progression, no challenge, nothing. After about an hour I'd seen everything the game had to offer and there was zero reason to keep playing. But I did anyway because I'm stubborn and thought maybe I was missing something. I wasn't. This is just... nothing. It's a tech demo at best.

Was It Worth The Money
No. Even at 3 dollars this felt like a ripoff. I've played free browser games with more content and polish. The fact that this is being sold on Steam for actual money is kind of insulting. It's not finished. It's barely functional. And there's no value here unless you're really into staring at broken geometry for an hour.

Final Thoughts
Infinitum is a broken mess with no redeeming qualities. Poor optimization, no music, terrible UI, zero gameplay, and bugs that make it crash randomly. I played 6.6 hours hoping it would get better or that I'd find some hidden depth. There isn't any. It's just bad. Don't buy this. Even on sale. Even if you're curious. Just don't. Save your money and your time. Score: 2/10 The only reason it gets a 2 instead of a 1 is because it technically runs... sometimes. That's it. That's the only positive thing I can say.

Infinitum is a space exploration and survival game that immerses players in a vast, multi-system universe under threat from a mysterious virus. The central objective of the game is to locate seven legendary artifacts, each of which is rumored to hold the key to developing a cure for the deadly pathogen that has spread across countless star systems. Achieving this goal requires players to navigate through a dozen star systems, each containing numerous planets with unique climates, environments, and hazards, offering a diverse and ever-changing backdrop for exploration. Exploration in Infinitum is both rewarding and challenging. Players must investigate abandoned space stations, derelict lunar bases, and uncharted worlds to uncover hidden clues and track down the artifacts. Hostile creatures and environmental dangers are common obstacles, requiring players to constantly monitor and manage their oxygen levels and life support systems, both for the protagonist and the spacecraft. Survival depends on careful planning, resource management, and adaptation to the varied and sometimes treacherous conditions of each world. Throughout the search, players will encounter black boxes left behind by previous explorers who failed in their quest. These remnants serve as both narrative elements and gameplay mechanics, providing insight into past attempts while guiding players toward their own discoveries. Additionally, the game encourages the collection of dark energy and matter, which can be synthesized into antimatter. This resource is essential for interstellar travel, enabling players to make jumps between star systems and expand the scope of their exploration. While the quest for artifacts drives the core gameplay, Infinitum also emphasizes freedom and wonder. Players can take time to appreciate the universe, flying near pulsars or black holes, strolling across the surface of newly discovered worlds, or observing celestial phenomena from a distance. The game’s open-ended nature allows for both focused mission-based play and leisurely cosmic exploration, catering to a wide range of player experiences. One of the game’s most distinctive features is its use of real astronomical data to enhance immersion. Certain locations reproduce the actual electromagnetic emissions of celestial bodies, translated into audible sounds. Players can listen to the “voices” of pulsars, the magnetosphere of Saturn, black hole accretion disks, and other cosmic phenomena, creating an experience that is not only visually captivating but also aurally authentic. This combination of science, survival, and exploration gives Infinitum a unique place in the space simulation genre. In summary, Infinitum offers a rich, multi-layered experience that blends survival mechanics, scientific curiosity, and interstellar adventure. Its intricate balance of danger, exploration, and discovery encourages both strategic planning and a sense of awe as players traverse alien worlds, uncover ancient mysteries, and navigate the vast, enigmatic cosmos. The game’s attention to detail, from life support management to realistic celestial sounds, ensures a deeply immersive journey for those willing to take on the challenges of the stars. Rating: 5/10
STARFIELD

https://store.steampowered.com/app/555670/Infinitum/
