Pretty bad game to be honest, The story was alright. It started strong, but felt very rushed at the end. Level-5 claimed the game has over 5000 characters, but none of the characters are truly unique as all the character's stats are basically copy-paste, After finishing the Chronicle mode there isn't much to do at all, playing online is bad because you'll be faced with cheaters and bad server connections, And if that ain't enough, you'll be faced with more cheaters in the form of the AI. Instead of making the computer more intelligent in the game, Level-5 basically gave them infinite hypermoves, infinite tension, and no move cooldown on AI keepers. You can't build up tension at all because of it.
Enjoyment: 10/10
I'm not a fan of football but I did really like watching Inazuma Eleven over a decade ago. I remember looking forward to the new episodes airing every week on TV. I was planning on trying out Victory Road someday, but the game was hella pricey and I wasn't sure how a series intended for children was gonna translate for me as an adult now. I finally caved and bought it and I gotta say, LEVEL5 really delivered. It has a certain charm and detail to it like Megaman Battle Network which is the kind I know I would've absolutely loved as a kid, and still do today. From the dialogue to the sandbox interactions, you can tell it's very kids friendly. There's pretty much no mature themes and instead you get a lot of bizarre and silly interactions. The cutscenes are high quality and some can get somewhat lengthy but I enjoyed them. There's a lot of side activities to do and I especially like how there are NPCs actually going about their day doing stuff and not just standing still. It makes the game feel very alive. The story mode can be slow if you're just itching to play football but personally I found it paced really well. A lot of anime games have a rushed story mode so it's comforting to see Victory Road take it slow. I'm 10 hours in and barely played any matches so far, and have only just established the football club, but it's well-executed enough that I'm not bored at all. I'm used to playing anime IP games from big name publishers like Bandai and Koei. They've developed a couple of good anime games for sure but there's many that feel lacking either in creativity, gameplay, or just polish in general. In a way they feel safe and predictable. But in Victory Road you can really tell a lot of passion went into it. The game is very optimized, the UI looks and feels premium, and there's lots of QoL features. I've never really paid attention to LEVEL5 before but they've become one of the developers I'm keeping a close eye on moving forward. The English localization is good but the dub does sound rather unnatural. It's honestly the only issue I've noticed so far. I've only experienced part of the story mode, so I'll just end it here for now and update the review again when I finish it and get to Chronicle mode.
Initially came to this game to study Japanese, ended up falling for the series as a whole. The story was fantastic, more emotional moments than I was expecting, and the character development all around is great. Working through Chronicle Mode now, while also watching the anime which is kind of nice because it reinforces what I watched. If you're studying Japanese it's a great game to learn from but beware that it took me about 16 months cumulative study to be able to grasp what's going on. I don't care for real life soccer but Inazuma's version is quite fun and unhinged, so even if you don't like the sport you should give it a go if you like over the top anime things.
As much as I love this series, this game is incredibly frustrating. The story is amazing, but all the teams except for a few in the main story are just plain filler with no depth whatsoever. The game has an awful amount of grinding. I know that’s what RPGs are all about, but in my opinion, it’s taken too far here. The online mode is a total mess. With every update, I get the feeling this game is heading in the wrong direction (not talking about addons to chronicle). Cheaters run wild online, and the ping differences cause such a lack of synchronization that it’s enough to drive you crazy. Adding away kits to buy with the currency that was introduced in the last update is just a mockery and a slap in the face to fans, since away kits were practically free in litterly every other game and could be changed with a single click. This is the biggest game in the series, but there are too many shortcomings that simply stem from some crazy ambitions that don’t benefit the players. I could write a bit more, but I don’t want to waste any more energy on this. As a fan since 2012, I’m just totally disappointed. In short, the single-player mode is okay, and I’d recommend it for that, but unfortunately, there are a lot of flaws. I absolutely do not recommend the online mode, at least in its current state, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon.
