Good game, too bad it got abandoned. Their DLC policy sucks though, so maybe it's for the best.
Very boring. Same 5 events happen over and over, a million different names to remember, but ICBA to memorize who's who, because as soon as you do, they die to something and you got a new list of names. Not deep enough to learn, too shallow to enjoy. Weird game.
Without mods, a solid and (because it's done development) broadly complete game, if lacking in some flavor. With mods? Genuinely one of the richest strategy experiences around. And the art/map/UI is just gorgeous; kudos to the devs for nailing the scale, mystique, and mood of the classical era
I want to love this game so badly, as there really isn’t any other game quite like it, but I can’t say I’d recommend it. The game manages to be both overly complex and overly simplistic at the same time. It’s like they looked at EU4, CK2, and Vic2 and took the worst parts of each. There are too many small, random buttons with little or no use other than to spend mana. Warfare includes all these tiny subunits and tactics you can select, with layers of detail in between to get super granular — yet it still comes down to who has the most troops. The pop and culture system looks complex from a distance, but in reality, it just boils down to building the same two buildings and enacting the same edict over and over. Micromanagement is overly tedious and frustrating, especially during wars. Obviously, the game was basically basically abandoned by Paradox for a reason. While they did improve it a lot from launch, a new coat of paint doesn’t fix the underlying issues with the game.
Pros: Control any ancient nation and do whatever you want with it Much freedom of what to do Interface is fairly easy once you learn it (however the tutorial doesn't fully explain this so I would recommend watching a youtube video to learn it.) Detailed map with hundreds of tribes- you can truly me ANY nation. Cons: Abandoned by devs and never gets updates All nations feel the same-after one playthrough you're kinda done. The entire research aspect of the game needs to be reworked (but it won't because the game was abandoned) changing government type takes forever (100+ years) fighting a major nation is a pain in the ass because they have like 20 legions, all with only about 2000 men and they just run around your armies and carpet siege cities so even though you are absolutely dominating in a war the other nation will still have more victory points because their small legions just siege a city and then run away i would highly recommend downloading the mod "invictus" as it essentially continues where the devs left off and fixes a lot of issues, but there's only so much a small modding team can do. Is it worth it? I would still say it is worth getting on sale. The game is still very fun, it just has a lot of issues (that will unfortunately never get fixed.) I give this game 6/10 stars because it is a great game but never got finished.
Sensitive young man simulator. 10/10 with the Imperator Invictus mod.
