Very niche game Very complicated and obscure gameplay, fan of the roman era will be pleased. It is well done but the learning curve is very long and very steep, be advised. Can be very fun, rewarding and addictive when learned (partially) Edit: There is a lot of good tutorial online about these paradox grand strategy games. Modding community is awesome
tldr the more u learn how to actually play the game the more fun it is watch yt vids if u need to its worth it
I played this game a long time ago and only now finally decided to buy it — though I wouldn’t say Paradox really deserves my money for it. They created a fantastic skeleton, but it only truly gained flesh thanks to the Imperator: Invictus mod, which I strongly recommend to everyone who tries this game for the first time. Unfortunately, on its own this is one of Paradox’s weakest titles. Still, thanks — with the right set of mods it shines brighter than EU4 and comes just slightly short of HOI4.
Good game, not worth the price as it has been effectively abandoned by the devs. With the Invictus mod you will have fun on this game, but I recommend buying it on G2A, third party or during a major sale.
There's not a ton here since Paradox abandoned it, but it is fun especially if you like the time period and worth getting on sale.
they advertised the ♥♥♥♥ out of this game with the promise of adding content and fixing it, then they cancelled all support as soon as people bought it lol
Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 486: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆☆☆☆☆ (4/10) Imperator: Rome has officially defeated me. I went in thinking, “Yeah, I can handle a Paradox grand strategy game; I played Crusader Kings.” But no. This game slapped the confidence straight out of my body. It’s like trying to take the LSAT while someone dumps an encyclopedia on your head page by page. I swear the menus multiply when I look away. I respect the ambition here—really, I do—but this is one of the few games where my brain simply tapped out and said, “We are NOT built for this.” But the entire time I played, I felt like I needed three monitors, a PhD in Roman economics, a notebook, and the game's wiki open. Not for me.
Pros:
✅ The map is gorgeous. Stunning. Like, I could stare at it and pretend I’m doing something important. Everything is crisp and clear, unlike older Paradox games. ✅ From what I've seen, there's tons of depth and detailed systems. ✅ The music goes hard. I felt like I was commanding legions even while panicking.
Cons:
🟥 The sheer amount of systems is overwhelming. Military, trade, pops, culture, senate approval, succession, characters plotting drama 24/7 … It’s too much. My little pea brain collapsed like a dying Roman republic. 🟥 The UI is a labyrinth. It hides info like it’s ashamed of it. Everything useful is five menus deep, and I really, really struggled to find a menu I needed. 🟥 The learning curve. There is a “tutorial,” but it teaches like two things and then kicks you into the Colosseum to fight lions. 🟥 Internal politics constantly implode. Something is always on fire and I never knew why. 🟥 Battles feel disconnected from everything else. I clicked troops and hoped for the best. Sometimes they won! Sometimes they died! Who knows! 🟥 I wanted to have fun, but instead I just felt stupid. Not the game’s fault, but still a con. 🟥 From what I remember, the development for this game halted pretty early on. Additionally, there's a smaller than usual community for this one.
