November 19, 2022 is when I stopped playing this after 350+ hours. It wasn't bad in the beginning. You longed for the next set of planes and maps. You wanted them to build what IL2 1946 had, but better. It's beautiful but their pricing practices makes continuing this ridiculous. Their single player is neglected and they favor only fighters. I'm told they are making another DLC for bombers, finally. It'll probably only have 6 planes, 4 of which are variations of those already in game and it will still be $80. They added Leningrad, which I wanted and would have bought like 10 years ago. 1C has lost it's way. They'd probably sell more games if they stopped with their pricing practices of giving so little for so much and just made a good game at a fair price.....especially one that is 12 years old and not an industry shaker like the original IL2 was. For me, I will go back to IL2 1946, Rise of Flight, and wait for Combat Pilot.

This is a $50, 90 GB video game that offers you, the new player, what I can only estimate is about 5 hours worth of content with terrible controls, poor visuals, incompetently programmed AI, and no options to improve this situation but to go the devs' way or the highway by spending $1500 on DLC older games give you for free. In fact, saying that paying the toll gives you what other games do is dishonest; there's no Pacific theater here, and I doubt there ever will be one, but that's ok because nothing important happened there. Oh, but the game's supporters will tell you that you just need to try one semi-modeled plane to see the light after you spend $500 on a HOTAS setup, of course. Sure, the much maligned War Thunder has controls that work perfectly well with your basic PC hardware, and it looks like a modern game instead of a late 2000s Xbox title, but that game only demands some of your money, rather than all of it like this one. Us normies just can't understand that it wouldn't be the same experience if you didn't need to spend 5 hours configuring joystick axes to larp on an empty server with 4 other people. Sure, something like DCS might offer higher-quality visuals and more detail for its high prices, but we can't expect these godlike developers to put that much effort into their product after 10+ years while they abandon it for a new game. Since I'm not a 90-year-old WWII veteran who wants to spend their social security checks to be able to tune the plane radio to their favorite oldies station, I think I'm going to go play IL-2: 1946, which I bought for $10 and is chock full of actually interesting content, like planes, maps, and missions that I don't need to pay for, provided by both the devs and the ample modding community, and somehow still has a better UI and control scheme despite being much older. It's a shame the WW2 flight sim bar is so pathetically low that this is seen by some as a good game, but maybe in 40 years, when all the whales are dead, we'll actually get a true successor to 1946.
Can't play at all because "invalid license key" even though this was purchased through Steam and my account is linked through Steam. Waste of money.
It is a good game, and quite fun to play and fly about in. Still, can't shake the feeling that it doesn't quite beat out 1946 in the long run. Oh well.
Coming from IL-2 1946 I find the FM in Great Battles to be more forgiving, contrary to what I've read. I'm not sure it is because GB is more arcady or because it's control is smoother and more responsive, I find it easier to land and less likely to stall in. Perhaps 1946 simply has poor controls? Never flew in real life so I can't tell. I get it that Difficulty =/= Realism, or Ghost 'n Ghoul would be the most realistic game ever. Sometimes it just bad controls. As to the AI, yeah I think it sucks but at least it doesn't cheat like in 1946. I'm always wary of praises for game AI, because no game has anything close to "AI" in the modern sense. Usually it's just cheating (Alien: Isolation always know your location) or well scripted behavior pattern to trick you into believing that it is "thinking". Overall I'm glad that I bought GB and have not returned to 1946 ever since. Thinking of getting all the DLCs just to support the developers. ----- Can't get enough of this game after 40 hours of playtime. I just bought all the WWII aerial DLC except for those belonging to Odessa and Leningrad. Will wait for a bigger discount for them.

It is a bit harsh to learn all in game features and that stuff, but, once you start to get it, this right here, lads, is a masterpiece. I am brazilian, and just to see the Senta a Pua livery, from the 1st Brazilian fighter group of the expeditionary forces sent to Italy, is just beyond awesome for me. Congratulations for all the team behind this incredible sim. Looking forward to IL2 Korean War!
