I love the story and the art. Overall, I think this is a great game, but if I had one criticism, it'd be that sometimes gameplay feels a bit slow. It's ok, but not my favorite. Navigating from point A to point B can sometimes feel a little tedious, and certain enemies can be bit annoying to deal with. That said, the boss fights are really fun. I think the reason is that the gameplay has a lot of stop-and-start moments. As you progress through the game, you'll encounter more enemies that require you to wait for an opening before you can attack or performing a specific action that takes a moment before you can progress. None of this is inherently bad. It's mostly a matter of personal preference. I tend to enjoy games with fast, fluid movement where simply getting around is fun. Hollow Knight: Silksong, for example, is the kind of gameplay I gravitate toward. Iconoclasts, on the other hand, feels much closer to Super Metroid, with a slower, more deliberate pace that emphasizes problem-solving. That said, the gameplay is still serviceable and can be enjoyable. Solving the puzzles can be satisfying and fun, and I think the boss fights are easily the strongest part of the gameplay. They're creative, memorable, and do a great job of breaking up the slower exploration with well-designed encounters. I think the best thing about Iconoclasts is its beautiful pixel art, and especially, its story. The story is honestly one of the best sci-fi narratives I've experienced in a game. It's that good. You can tell the developer had something meaningful to say. I totally recommend it! Go play it!

First of all, I gave this game a thumbs up with mixed feelings, and I almost rated it with a thumbs down. My experience can be divided into three stages: - I love this game (the first few hours, when everything feels fresh and fun) - I the f**k just want to finish this game (once the puzzles gets hard, or you realize there are hidden chests with almost no hints, many boss fights that the game barely teaches you their mechanics, and gets boring when you're just traveling between maps/rooms) - I love this game (watching the ending and the credits reminded me why I liked it at first) I would recommend this game if you love its art style and don't mind Google the solution when you get stuck. The worldbuilding, atmosphere, and story, the art, the music are all AWESOME. And hypothetically speaking, IF the game has better hints for puzzles and boss mechanics, and with a more convenient fast travel system (like teleporting between save points instead of just the underground elevator), I honestly think this would be one of those "you have to play this" games.
This game is a masterclass of interactive storytelling integrated into gameplay. Basically what Metroid Fusion's storytelling wanted to be when it grew up. It's hard to praise the storytelling and worldbuilding too much, and there's so much to say about the way the story is told via gameplay that it's better to say it in an essay than a Steam review. My biggest issue is that the "Tweaks" system is indeed accurately named - the tweaks don't really make big changes to the gameplay, and while they are fun, they end up largely inconsequential. The real mechanic of progress is the major upgrades, unless you're going for 100%. There is some self-awareness in that design, since the main inspiration, Metroid Fusion, also does this, but I would say this is a flaw of both games. There's exactly 2 ways to play this game optimally - Any% and 100%, since there is very little reward in going for only some of the tweaks, rather than all of them. And that's a shame since the puzzles to get them are VERY good. If you're just playing for the story, then focus on that, I would say. The puzzles to unlock the tweaks would make a decent post-game challenge if taken all at once. Oh yeah, review. Right. Yeah the game's amazing. Certified indie classic. Buy it.
iconosclasts appears on the surface like a run-of-the-mill metroidvania, and in part it is that, but beneath the surface lies something special and interesting. a game with a message and something to say, a game whose writing, themeing, gameplay, and design are in concordance, a game that while isn't perfect manages to be something greater than the sum of its parts.
A great Metroidvania with fluid controls, satisfying mechanics, and a suprisingly good story. The narrative can be downright grim at times which took me by surprise given this game's cute and colorful artstyle. I really enjoyed it.
